[ADMIN NOTE: It seems that the images in this and the following two posts are no longer retrievable.] How about a thread showing covers from Newfoundland, 1857-1949? I have a registered cover showing the 1939 Royal Visit (another of my favorites). St Johns to Nanaimo BC. Uploaded with ImageShack.us

I like this cover for several reasons, first, it is a registered Newfoundland to Kansas City, Mo. It has a Scott #193 and a nice etiquette. The recipient, National Bellas Hess, sounded kind of familiar, so I did some research and they were a large mail order catalog company. Now I worked for the US Post Office from 1962 to 1975, so I am sure I handled their catalogs at some point but I really don't recall them. They no longer exist, but in legal circles they are famous for the lawsuit that stopped states from charging taxes on a Company that has no presence in that state. Here is a link that covers their history:Uploaded with ImageShack.us

First flight St Johns to St Anthony. This trip started on Jan. 29th, 1931. The plane, a Gypsy Moth, broke down and a mechanic had to be sent by train, then by dog team. After temporary repairs, the flight continued on Feb. 5th but several stops were required because of mechanical problems and the weather. All in all, it took almost 3 weeks for the round trip. There were 7,847 pieces of mail carried on the trip. The Gypsy Moth was an open air cockpit biplane. Flying one in Newfoundland in January - February show more bravery than I ever had! This cover has 2 nice Newfoundland scott C6 (unwatermarked) or C9 (watermarked) airmails on it. The back of the cover is stamped "Keep Sunday Sacred".

My one and only Newfoundland cover, it's actually in my small collection of YMCA stationary. The cancel is an unknown RPO, as the postmarks are only half on the piece. Passed by an R.C.A.F. censor though.

What I collect: I collect world wide up to 1965 with several specialty albums added due to volume of material I have acquired. At this point I am focused on Canada and British America. I am always on the lookout for stamps and covers with postmarks from communities in Queens County, Nova Scotia. I do list various goods including stamps occasionally on eBay as hdm50

Sometimes it is easy to forget that Newfoundland did not join Canada till 1949. It still seems strange to see censored covers going from Newfoundland to Canada like this one to Quebec during World War II.

A cover with a poignant history - the RMS 'NOVA SCOTIA', built 1926 by Vickers/Furness Withy, was a regular on the mail runs from the eastern N.A. seaboard and the U.K. until requisitioned as a troop ship early in WW II. The vessel was torpedoed and sunk in conflict in late 1942 with the loss of 858 out of a total of 1052 passengers and crew. One of it's earlier passengers who later became very famous was the author Roald Dahl who as a 17 year old took part in some sort of youth exchange programme with others of a similar age in Newfoundland around 1934. At this time Newfoundland was an independent Dominion of the U.K. but the guy on the stamp here isn't George V as I'd first assumed - might it be a young George who went on to become George VI, possibly ?? anyone know. Love the colour of the stamp - almost raspberry - thanks for looking.

hdm1950 - thanks very much for that - part of the reason for my ignorance is that the cancellation covers rather a lot of the guy's face - and yes, of course, Ed. VIII was in line for Monarch before his brother George VI, though there was no way the British Government of the day was going to have an American divorcee on the British throne and his obstinacy ultimately got him the elbow. thanks Peter, well spotted - love the humor - we need it sometimes

I've been trying to find all of the 1919 Caribou issue on cover; but a tough challenge. Here's a 15 cent cover. I would really like to find a 12 cent on cover; probably wishful thinking.
