This very common series has some small detail that need some attention. The first Issue 1 schilling violet brown was actually not a part of the 'Building series'. It was edited to commemorate the 800th anniversary of the pilgrimage town Mariazell. Under the frame we can see the name of the designer (H. Strohofer) and the engraver (G. Wimmer). This stamp has a single line inner frame. The stamp was issued 1957-06-22. Mi 1035, Sc 620, Yt 868, Sg 1292, AFA 935Then some months later the 'same' stamp was re-issued 1957-10-25. This issue is the first in the 'Building series'. But with some differences. Now it has a double line in the inner frame. It is also typographic printed, the first one was recess printed. Mi: 1037, Sc: 621, Yt: 870A, Sg: 1294, AFA: 937. And on 1959-01-19 there was two new versiones, with only the designer name ( in center) under the bottom frame. This stamp came in two versions, on grey paper and on white, fluorescent paper. Grey paper: Mi: 1045x, Sc: 622, Yt: 871A, AFA: 949. Fluorescent paper: Mi: 1045y, Yt: 871B, Sg: 1302.

Wow tobben63 , the differences are so obvious when you show the details. I am no longer a world wide collector and have to confess that I had always assumed with one basic design , they were all the same stamp. To see 3 so different is a complete surprise and I am a little ashamed at my previous ignorant dismissal of the design .

I love the small differences in those common stamps. And they are often bad described and illustrated in the catalogs.

I do love this series, and there is indeed a case for identifying some of the small variations in them. The other differentiator for the 1 shilling stamps is that they are different printing types - Scott #620 is engraved, Scott #621 is typography and Scott #622 is lithography (according to Scott anyway)... Here are some of the ones I have: Series 1 (1957-1961)Scott #619, 1959: Scott #622, 1959: Scott #623, 1958: Scott #624, 1960: Scott #625, 1958: Scott #627, 1960: Scott #629, 1960: Series 2 (1962-1970):Scott #688, 1962: Scott #691, 1962: Scott #696, 1968: Scott #699, 1962: Scott #700, 1962:

This series shows endless variations: Mi.1035 yellow gum June 1957,white gum Sept.1957
1037 yellowish gum Okt.1957,white gum Aug.7th,1958
1045 grey-yellowish paper
without brightener with brightener smooth gum
with brightener,fluted (?) gum, "geriffelter Gummi"
1045 white paper
five different grades of brightener,from very bright to nearly none at all five different colours of gums,mostly corresponding with the different grades of brighteners
There are different colour variations (shades) of most stamps
and then,of course,there are very many flaws,too many to catalogize them by Michel;
further more nearly all stamps of this series are also known imperforated.

salentinVery true...endless variations.I have numerous pages of this series.All are used so it is almost impossible to see all the different gum colours.There are many different shades. This is similar to the earlier long definitive set of local costumes.I have found many stamps with numerous shades,sometimes up to 10 different shades of the same stamp.
