Thought this might be an interesting discussion…
What are your favorite ways to acquire new material? Collections? Kiloware, One at a time from a wishlist? Trading? Small auction lots? New issue subscriptions? All of the above?
Personally, I’m a sucker for collections - especially those with odds and ends in the back of the book. I flyspeck several countries so most duplicates hold some interest for me. But, I’m getting to the point where I need to shop from my wishlist.
Your turn…

My preferred way of acquire stamps was buying box lots! But I could not go on like that. I have stuff bought long time back that I have not had a good look at yet. So now I do it the boring way, purchase only what I need from my wish list. Not so fun, but much more wise I think. But now and then I have to purchase a box with albums, small boxes, envelopes, a mess, it's so fun and a hobby should be fun What does these cards hide?

This is (the start) to an interesting thread. Since I am a self-identified worldwide collector (once upon a time I had only specific geographic areas I collected, but that became too pedantic for me), I acquire stamps in a number of ways. Occasionally it's kiloware, although I find that after I've done all the soaking, drying and sorting I usually end up with very few stamps I need in my collection. The advantage is getting high quality used examples, especially of newer issues that are more and more difficult to find used. Sometimes I request dealer approvals, although I find that the % of catalog of prefer to pay isn't as low as I would like. I really enjoy acquiring accumulations and sifting through them, keeping what I need and trading for what I already have. I also am currently involved with a seller who offers mint from across the decades at about 17% of catalog in a large group every other month. Some good quality finds there. I enjoy being part of several collectors' exchanges, as well. But what I most enjoy is purchasing from other collectors. Knowing that I can put a little extra money in their collecting budgets while enhancing my own collection is always rewarding. There are often infrequent opportunities to connect with other collectors directly (at least in my part of the country), so this offers that opportunity as well.

My only interests right now: 1) buy stamps that fill some gaps in specific collections, classics mostly and replacing some used CANADA with Mint 2) since I have too many stamps, and I do not sell any on Ebay, Delcampe or Hipstamp, I prefer to giveaway "duplicates" I have and I have one going on for PERU 3) I have sold some Countries on TSF but the buying interest is not worth the trouble 4) Just sold my Vatican collection to a member of TSF but not in a TSF thread. The BIG collection was my late dad's and he sold it to a priest before I could put my hands on it - He had a complete Vatican collection up to 1985 - and member of the Intercontinental Guild of Vatican Philatelists (member 148) René edit: my interests do not present any judgement on other members' way of stamping, which I respect. You will never see me buy LOTS like some members do - I am lazy Also, buying $500 stamps is very rare for me as I do not see any investments in stamps - But a stamp here and there, with good CV, is nice once in a while !!

Three to five times a year I get a chance to visit a stamp show, I will have a couple of major purchases from a dealer who has searched out some stuff for me then spend hours rummaging boxes of covers/ postal history. Who knows what treasures will turn up ?

I work from a wantlist. I used to buy from Hipstamp and Stamps2go, but am having a harder and harder time finding items I am missing. Maybe I should explore a new source such as Delcampe or Colnect. I make the most of local bourses and regional stamp shows where I can directly examine stamps. I frequently feed on the APS stampstore and its circuit books. For the big fish, I look to reputable auction houses.

I scour the depths of eBay looking for collections with stamps I'm looking for, and low view & bid counts. If I win, I usually make my money back on the ones I don't need.

I tend to work from wish lists, made up from what is on offer with a few dealers from whom I buy regularly. Every so often, I will splurge for a larger lot, but I end up most of the time with some 80-90% duplicates which I must them find a better home too (hence my large give-aways from time to time). I also participate in some monthly auctions, but with a limited budget so often get sniped out. When I travel, I like to find a local stamp shop and beef up my collection with things I am looking for to complete holdings as listed in my catalogs. On a budget still, so I don't go crazy. I still get some soaking material from relatives that save it for me, but it lingers many months before I get to it, usually.

What I collect: I collect world wide up to 1965 with several specialty albums added due to volume of material I have acquired. At this point I am focused on Canada and British America. I am always on the lookout for stamps and covers with postmarks from communities in Queens County, Nova Scotia. I do list various goods including stamps occasionally on eBay as hdm50

Give me a large box full of old musty collections, small boxes, envelopes of duplicates etc. and I am in my happy place. The good deal I have had going for years is a long time friend and antique/collectables dealer that gets occasional estate collections that he lets me go through first to take what I want and help him lot them for his online MaxSold weekly auctions. I do have many watch items on eBay for specific collecting fields and I do buy better items from local auction. Large boxes full of stuff are still the preferred way to acquire as I find it so therapeutic.

I acquire material from auction lots (bulk, country collections, etc), trading, and kiloware. Once I get myself more organized, I may start a wish list, but I have so much material to look at now I'm not sure when that will be.

When i first returned to my stamps in 2018 I bought "accumulations", which gave way to specific areas of interest, which i looked for "study lots" so as to have a large number of each denomination to look through. I still look for lots that have stamps for interest, and did recently win a French collection with stock books, but it largely contained stamps I already have, but i will fly-speck them all at some poiunty. Soon I may be looking for a trading partner for more specific stamps, but not quite there yet.
And I have been periodically known to just send stamps to others (who sometimes send stamps to me or not!)

I only buy specifically what I need anymore. Since seriously decluttering about a decade ago, I don't feel the need to just accumulate stuff. I know what I want and I get what I need, that's it. I see no point in having millions of stamps sitting around in boxes that I have zero interest in.

My collecting has boiled down to off paper kiloware. My collecting interest has turned to letter rate worldwide definitives for flyspecking and interesting cancels. The duplicates go out in packets to collectors who enjoy the larger, and more colorful stamps. It has been a rewarding experience for all involved.

I’m really all over the place. Recently, I purchased a large, off-paper mixed WW lot, which I still haven’t finished sorting through, and it has become incredibly tiresome. I prefer to buy smaller lots, sets, or singles if I know enough to know I’m not being hosed. I’m not purchasing high-dollar items, so buying bite-sized chunks works for me. Anything larger than that makes the hobby a chore for me and that’s obviously not what I’m looking for.

I scour the depths of eBay looking for collections with stamps I'm looking for, and low view & bid counts. If I win, I usually make my money back on the ones I don't need. I had something similar recently with purchasing an unsold collection lot of airmail covers off of my favorite French dealer.
Up to now, my collection has maybe five covers, tops. My local bought my duplicate covers, but if I'd have been more patient, there's profit. If I could only find more lots like this, it's not easy!
Two years ago I was mostly on Delcampe, but it is such a crap shoot between flaky sellers or shipping delays that damage material. It was a good training ground though, as you pick up the necessary French to operate and get to separate the flakes from the legit folks. Mind you, Delcampe is really of interest if you collect French Colonies / France, perhaps less so for other areas.
eBay has been delivering the basics, but for what I'm after lately, it's French dealers/auction houses or bust. There's a reason why these guys have been in business for decades. Exchange rate seems favorable right now.

Clearly it depends on what type of collector you are.
For my theme it's just individual mint stamps, proofs, sets that I buy, no kiloware, no large auction lots, no give-aways, very few left overs to sell or trade.
As such, I have no particular preference, I use all available sources for my stamps:
Online auctions like Ebay, Delcampe and Hipstamp
Main auction houses (mostly UK based) like Spink, Cavendish, Grosvenor, Stanley Gibbons, Corbitts etc.
Dealer's websites Stamp fairs
I get my enjoyment from researching and searching for the stamps I want.

If I am starting a new country, I will often try to buy a starter collection but once established I tend to buy just what I need. I try to avoid duplicates since never got into trying to trade or sell them. Successful trading can be difficult without a lot of organization. The Colnect trade setup method seems very interesting but it takes an investment of time. I also try to buy from a select group of sellers. I would rather pay a little more to reduce endless searching on ebay, hipstamp, etc. I am not much of a haggler. I will pay the price I want so never expect a counter offer from me.

I only got interested in stamps in late 2019. Then Covid happened and I had another thing to do while isolating! I started buying through eBay (I have been an eBay buyer of colonial American coins for 20 years). I expanded to HIP and Delcampe and local shows once they started up after Covid.
I started collecting only early U.S. and related covers. That did not last too long. I decided I needed to do at least one foreign thing -- I chose Indian Feudatory States because it looked complicated and really different. It is all those things and more.
Until recently I made custom pages for everything I bought (including covers). Unfortunately I have a backlog on covers. I have started just putting covers into sheet protectors until I can make specific pages for them. So I have turned off buying covers mostly.
Very recently I bought a Big Blue album just for fun. Hahaha. Then a second one to cannibalize for my main BB. And so it goes.
Right now I am trying to figure the best way to add to my main BB. Stamp hinges or clear mounts? And interleaving. And and and ....
So far I have strictly limited how many books I buy. They weigh so much and take up way too much space!!! I only have about two linear feet of stamp related books. So far.
I do occasionally look at mainline (Siegel, Spink, Harmers, classicphil, cherrystone, et al) auctions and have bid in a few and won a few lots that way also.
I do wonder how places like NYstamps (and others sellers like them) find the vast amount of stamps/covers they list -- albeit poorly presented mostly.

banknoteguy as a new collector you sure have dove into the deep end of the pool. I guess already being a collector in other fields makes this a bit easier to do. As you say, the Indian Confederated States is a complex field. One can quickly get a large collection though due to how inexpensive a lot of it is. In regards your BB, I tend to use hinges unless the item is mint never hinged or if the catalogue value is over 20.00. If nothing else mounts make these better items stand out.

I've done the completest bit, the panic bidding on ebay with three seconds to go, the frantic auction hunting ......... now I like to take it easy and be surprised. I haunt boot sales, charity shops and from anywhere I think I might find stamps - I've discovered it's the unpredictability, the surprise that gives most pleasure, the next stamp might be a triangle, or black or other good thing. I don't want to leave a problem for my family, don't want them to wonder whether there's something valuable that they've just put in the bin. But a collector never gives up, we never lose that hunting for rare and valuable things, the passion. But hey, it's whatever floats your boat, and no one is right and no one is wrong - it's all about enjoyment.

The majority of my purchases are from online, usually eBay. I have around 25 searches registered with them for which I receive a daily morning email of the new listings in those categories. I also check with HipStamp on occasion, but most of their listings seem to be eBay duplicates. Once in a while I will score on Delcampe.
Texas has 2 major shows, but the distance to one eliminates it from the hunt.

For my US collection I go by a want list and buy from 1 specific dealer and 1 auction house. This may change as I fill more holes. For my other collections I hunt around and buy from the ones I feel have reasonable price. I rarely buy stamps on eBay. I do have a couple of internet people I get stamps from and from some great giveaways here. I don’t buy kiloware as I know there will never be MNH in it for my US collection and that being my main collection I spend the most money on it and I want to spend wisely.

For my US collection I search for stamps on eBay from my want-list or will send my list to a dealer and have have them send what I need. For my German collection I have recently purchased 5 pounds of kiloware on paper and 10,000 off paper to sort through. I stopped collecting Germany for quite a few years so this has enabled me to to fill in some gaps in the last 10-15 years.
I used to obtain my stamps by trading 1:1. I created a world-wide network 20 years ago that consisted of many different members; this was back when Yahoo had user groups.

I acquire stamps from various sources - several dealers, including two in my community who have been a big help. Most material, though, is acquired on eBay or through auctions on SAN.
