These overprints were an inexpensive way of extending the validity of a stamp into new territory without the need for the complete stamp design and preparation process. They were usually a stop-gap or temporary issue Such as the MEF and BMA until normal service could be resumed. 1937-45 the volume of mail for South Georgia , Tristan, Niue etc was so small presumably the production of stamps was deemed too expensive to justify an issue from scratch.

Thanks for your post, paul1. The stamps are interesting to be sure. I am going to move this thread to the British Offices Abroad board that was created during the re-organization of the European main board a couple of months back. If you look at some of the other threads already in that board, you will see some other examples similar to yours.
