Hi all I have indentified the stamp as being ? Australia New South Wales Scott# 102a, but the watermark isn't displayed anywhere in the catalogue. It is clearly a double-lined N O. Any help would be appreciated Steve

Is this a stamp at all ? Or is it a cut-out from a postal stationery ?

I don't know, in Scott catalogue it matches the picture and there was an imperf with a narrow H in "HALF PENNY" issued. Plus, would stationary have a watermark?

in earlier times most paper was wmkd. irrespective of use, but I can't make out what it is that I'm supposed to be seeing in the picture posted of a wmk. I think the equivalent is sg 271 - 2 or 3, this half penny looks to have been printed in grey - slate and blue-green in 1892. Surprisingly very low value for something that's of such an age. Agree about the narrow 'H', which SG draw attention to, but think I'm very dim as I can't work out what the wmk. should be. Also can't quite decipher what the No. is in the cancellation.

I don´t know wether N.S.W. stationery exist on watermarked paper. But why not ? The "normal" perforated stamps from 1892 and 1899 were printed quite close to each other. That should be the case with imperforated ones as well. As yours has very wide margins,I think,it cannot be a "real" stamp, but could be a cut-out. Both stamps are quite common,so if you have them, compare their´s paper with that of the imperforated one.Perhaps that will help.

SG notes the imperf but only in pairs as a single would be easy to fake. However as salentin points out the margins are huge which suggests very strongly it is a cut out from postal stationery , probably a newspaper wrapper. Thanks for confirmation michael your post came through ahead of mine Stationery imprints will not have the regular individual watermark of sheet adhesives. However paper makers frequently had watermarks with the company name in such large letters as these at the edges of stamp sheets but also watermarked other paper products such as that used for stationery. Probably a bit of hit or miss where the letters of the name landed during the printing run but envelopes and newspaper wrappers will be found with part of the name such as this . Australian collectors are probably more interested in the postmark number 1221 wherever that originates. Some tiny short lived offices are rare. I do not have Freeman’s book but maybe someone will identify it for you. Ps paul1 , Step well back from your screen and the double lined “O” will jump out clear , over 50% of the image , then you will also see the “N”
