I thought I'd share with you how I view my collection digitally. It's basically a website but it is stored locally for my viewing only, rather than being hosted on the internet. I have a Synology NAS (Network Attached Storage) whose main use is for streaming audio/video and backup/storage of documents, music, pictures etc. The NAS has a built-in webserver which contains the website and you browse to it like you would on the internet using the NAS's local ip address. The website is maintained from my PC by the website design software, Dreamweaver 8. It's very old but works fine for my purpose and I don't know or probably wouldn't understand any of the modern alternatives. I did some programming in the 1980s and have a basic understanding of HTML code and CSS. The website is very simple, as all I need it for is a general description, images of the stamps and links to additional information. I use a third party java library for displaying images and slideshows. All my stamps are scanned at 1200dpi on an Epson Perfection scanner and then reduced by 10%. The main page displays the 10% image. Clicking the stamp, the 1200dpi image is viewed in a window up to the size of the image or the browser's window. Click again and you can view and scroll around the full 1200dpi image. My laptop and mobile phone also have a copy of the website so I can view all my stamps on these wherever I am, like at stamp shows. I can also view it on my wife's iPad via the phone as shown to fellow members at the London 2022 International Stamp Show earlier this year. I'm just updating it with my pre-decimal (1971) British South Atlantic Island stamps. These images give you an idea. Top part of a typical page: Select a stamp:

I agree, that's quite the site.
I have been thinking of building a website also. Mine would just be stored in the cloud, so it would be accessible from any device (well, not my AppleTV!) anywhere.
I have yet to make a start. But that one you have created looks great! Lots of extra's, not just your stamps. It's something to strive for!

Excellent website michael! I also use my Synology NAS to publish my stamp indexing website, and figured out how to update my network so I can access it from anywhere on the internet. It's nowhere near as nice as yours, or with as much information though. Well done!

You should consider converting it to a publicly accessible website. You've already got it built, and good hosting can be had for only US$10-15/month. If you decide you want to and need tech support, don't hesitate to ask.

I don't know if I was the only one at London 2022 to get to see your digital site, but what I saw was superb! For starters. you have extremely nice and interesting stamps, you have excellent hi-res scans of them, and you take the time to identify them correctly and explain any nuances. What more could anyone ask? I really enjoyed getting a virtual tour of your collection back in February, and I am delighted that you have chosen to post about what you have done here on TSF. You have a great collection, and thank you for giving me the chance to see it electronically.

Many thanks for the comments and likes, I hope the thread will encourage others to do likewise in one way or another. brightonpete Yes the cloud, I guess that is the modern way of doing it, Wordpress or something similar. I don't have anything in the cloud, just my preference. My whole site can be stored and viewed from a USB drive. cjoprey Yes, I could allow internet access by opening a port on my router but I'm concerned about the security issues as a result of doing this. PostmasterGS When I started nearly 10 years ago I was unsure of the copyright issues with S.G. numbers and prices (which were included as a guide for me) and there were many images that I had scanned from books and magazines etc. that were probably protected by copyright so I didn't think it was worth the hassle to have it online. 350 pages later there would be a lot of work for me to tidy it up for everyone else to see. One day maybe . Beryllium Guy Thanks Chris for your kind words, no guessing which country you looked at first .

For anyone that might be interested
I should point out that you don't need a server or a NAS to do what I have done, a PC is all you need. The HTML markup language is very easy to use as can be seen here on this excellent tutorial website: www.w3schools.com/html/html_intro.aspThe images and slideshows are simply done: Define library at top of page: <link type="text/css" rel="stylesheet" href="../../floatbox/floatbox.css"> <script type="text/javascript" src="../../floatbox/floatbox.js"></script> Display image: <a href="stamps/falkland_1933_0.5d.jpg" class="floatbox" rev="boxRoundCorners:none outerBorder=0 innerBorder=0 padding:0 panelPadding:0 roundCorners:none showCaption:false showClose:false imageClickCloses:true"><img src="stamps/falkland_1933_0.5d_200.jpg" border="0"></a> Display slideshow: <a href="images/falkland_0.5d_essay.jpg" class="floatbox" title = "" data-fb-options="maxWidth: 600 outerBorder:0 innerBorder:0 padding:0 panelPadding:0 doSlideshow:true afterSlideshow:stop startPaused:true group:pb">designs</a> <a href="images/falkland_1d_essay.jpg" class="floatbox" title="" rev="maxWidth: 600 group:pb"></a> <a href="images/falkland_1.5d_essay.jpg" class="floatbox" title="" rev="maxWidth: 600 group:pb"></a> <a href="images/falkland_2d_essay.jpg" class="floatbox" title="" rev="maxWidth: 600 group:pb"></a> <a href="images/falkland_3d_essay.jpg" class="floatbox" title="" rev="maxWidth: 600 group:pb"></a> <a href="images/falkland_4d_essay.jpg" class="floatbox" title="" rev="maxWidth: 600 group:pb"></a> <a href="images/falkland_9d_essay.jpg" class="floatbox" title="" rev="maxWidth: 600 group:pb"></a> <a href="images/falkland_1s_essay.jpg" class="floatbox" title="" rev="maxWidth: 600 group:pb"></a> <a href="images/falkland_2s6d_essay.jpg" class="floatbox" title="" rev="maxWidth: 360 group:pb"></a> <a href="images/falkland_5s_essay.jpg" class="floatbox" title="" rev="maxWidth: 360 group:pb"></a> <a href="images/falkland_10s_essay.jpg" class="floatbox" title="" rev="maxWidth: 360 group:pb"></a> <a href="images/falkland_£1_essay.jpg" class="floatbox" title="" rev="maxWidth: 360 group:pb"></a>

Thanks for the links, michael ! I've bookmarked the Learn HTML one, as it's been 12 years since I did anything with it. Could never get my head around style sheets - may be this time around...
Anyone interested, check out the Floatbox website.
