Hi zipper It is very confusing that we use Pound as our currency and it is also a weight. We distinguish the Currency with an italic "L" ie " £ " from the Latin Libra and use " lbs" for the weights measure . I guess you have found it at £100 ,rather than 100lbs (which would be a bit heavy for a counter clerk to handle!)

On my IPad, there is a button .?123 that brings up a page of numerical & currency symbols. vikingeck , Alex, Let me explain - we Americans have always had typewriters that only have a $ sign that you get by hitting shift plus 4. Until word processors and computers, we were taught to use “lb.” to represent the word or term “pound” for both the weight AND the currency or to just use $ to represent ALL currencies (which is über stupid) So people of my generation in the USA grew up with that as the “correct” way to denote “pound sterling”. When I was in typing class in the 1970s that’s how it was taught. I asked why we didn’t at least use a capitol “L”, but the typing teacher said that was confusing and not the standard, at least that’s what my teacher in Michigan insisted that we use. I can see where you might not know that and that might seem weird to a UK person - another example of a people separated by a common language (and their symbols) eh? I knew exactly what she meant.

Can't make out much more than this left Edinburgh on February 13th, and arrived in Glasgow on the 14th. All I can see in the postmark is a number 3. When I looked it up, it didn't match, so those slight marks on both sides of the 3 must be another number.

nice cover .
The cancel is actually a barred “131 “ which is the number allocated ( in alphabet order) for Edinburgh. Starting with Aberdeen which was Number 1. The series of numbers ran into over 500 with W plus some later additions .
That red pen mark must indicate the Registered fee ….. looks like “1/- “. One shilling ie 12 pennies…. But can’t be that expensive surely? maybe just an extra “one” penny
the Glasgow, Paisley , Kilmarnock and Ayr Railway (GPK&AR) lasted for 10 years from 1840 to 1850 until it merged with the mainline south to Carlisle as the Glasgow and SouthWestern Railway

But can’t be that expensive surely? maybe just an extra “one” penny Between 6th January 1841 and 28th March 1848, the registration fee was, indeed, one shilling and the fee had to be paid in cash. The fee was drastically reduced over the next several years.

That one shilling registration was expensive and in 1847 represented rather more than a day’s wage for a labourer who earned about 4/- for a 6 day week.

A very nice cover zipper with two unusual and interesting Edinburgh postal markings ... The Boxed " SCOTS LOCAL" handstamp of [ANTIGUA ST] (Street) was a receiving office in Edinburgh which could cancel the stamp but did not have a date or time handstamp. The POSTED AFTER 7 LAST NIGHT of the Edinburgh Head post Office was used to explain and defuse any potential complaint about late delivery in AYR should the letter be delayed. They worried about these things back in 1857 . A Lovely clean Envelope with relatively scarce Postmarks

zipper, another great cover. It must be another railway company letter, sent from an engineering firm to The Ayr and Maybole (Junction) Railway. A short line that opened in 1856. It was a profitable company that was ultimately absorbed into the Glasgow and South Western Railway. Daniel

can't make out an 'a', but 964 runs down to Euston Square Station (Middlesex - London area) - presumably 'railway station'. The Index says 'in lists before 1874' - not sure of N.B. - North of the Border ?? ;-);-)
Nice cover and good colour to the stamp. Just woken up - now spotted the Euston cancellation.

This appears to be from the something or other and Maybelle junction RR. That's the Ayr and Mabole Junction Railway that I mentioned above, unpaid? This batch all seem to be interconnected. Very interesting. Daniel

Bought a batch of 9 covers for $9.99 + $1.00 shipping.
Too late, I realized I had posted it to the wrong page so I moved it to GB Stmpless Covers.

Hi zipper lucky lucky you . 9 lovely Victorian covers for less than £1 each. Wow! from those you have shown, here in Scotland The Scottish postal History buffs would have paid 10-20 times that . The ANTIGUA ST alone could be £50 and the Ayr REFUSED a similar amount Here is William Pollock solicitor again ( writer to the Signet) as posted on the thread “Queen Victoria on Cover” The law firm of W Pollock and W J Pollock seem very much involved inthe varoius businesses in Ayr , the Harbour board , the Corn Exchange , the lifeboat and now evidently the Railway companies. paul1 . N.B is the standard abbreviation used for Scotland in the 19th century and equates to North Britain. , not North of the Border. daniel can you explain the 6d stamp would that be registration?

Hi Alex, vikingeck, yes, you're correct, the registration fee was 6d from 23rd March 1848 to 1st August 1862. Daniel

Nice Scots Local cancel again …… I believe LONDON ROAD small sub post office, not “Bridge”
Once again clean from a lawyer’s archive. “WS” = writer to the Signet an Edinburgh law firm,
that pencil price can’t be recent? £7.50 is CHEAP.
