What I collect: France, Bavaria

Hi All!
Just introducing myself- getting back into stamp collecting after many years away. Right now I'm focusing on France and maybe at some point, Bavaria. I collected some as a kid/teen- mostly worldwide with an old HE Harris album. I later got into First Day Covers for a bit and then fell away from it all. Looking around a bit, all I can say is wow! It's certainly changed a lot and it's seems a bit easier than it was back in the 1960s/70s, at least one level. I've been sorting through all the basics and slowly gathering supplies, a stock book (for now), and some stamps...lots of mint ones to be had relatively inexpensively so that's a good start.
I'm looking at focusing on the period up to 1950 or so and the war years and liberation have really caught my eye so I'll be starting there. Anyway, hoping to learn a lot and see where I go.
P.S. Military history has always been an interest and that's probably going to guide my collecting at least for awhile.

Welcome oskar1 to TSF. A very friendly forum. There are a number of us here who collect France. I collect up to ~1970s and am interested in color shades and plate varieties. With the color shades, often a used stamp with a readable date cancel helps to limit down the possible color shades. Cheers Stan Northern California

Thanks! I've also been looking some of the more souvenir sheet issues and FDCs- military subjects are of interest and anything else that looks interesting. Trust me, this is purely for me, not investment. :-) But those liberation issues are cool and I'm trying to understand the overprints. If anyone knows any information sources (i.e., postal history, that would be great. Merci Beaucoup!

oskar1 what catalogues for France do you have? Yvert & Tellier, or Maury, Ceres & Dallay, or Spink Maury would be good resources, and as you do not collect modern you would not necessarily need the most recent editions. IMHO, Scott nor SG are all that helpful beyond a general collection.

Not knowing any better, I got the most recent Scott catalog, which was probably a mistake. I'm looking at maybe the Yvert & Tellier although I'm entertaining suggestions. The one think I noted about the Scott catalog is that it says nothing about the liberation overprints.

The 2018 Spink|Maury has a section for the liberation FM stamps, but it may not be detailed enough for your interests. Dallay (looking at a 2001-2002) catalogue may have slightly more information Yvert & Tellier 2021 seems possibly a bit less "coverage" Used catalogues can be gotten on e-Bay very reasonably, though you may want to look for a US seller as shippings books "across the pond" can be as much as the book! you might look here I don't know much about this site but he advertises specifically about France Liberation issues and a catalogue... It is a definite sales pitch. Perhaps someone else with fisrthand experience can weigh in!?! Searching for France Liberation stamp references brings up a few areas to explore! Good luck!!!!

What I collect: Used only - Australia, Great Britain, Canada, Ireland, Western Europe, and Scandinavia, from 1900 to date. That keeps me busy. To be honest I am trying to avoid becoming a WW collector.
