So, have this nice 3d stamp in my Victoria collection, and based off of the watermark, it's either number 299 or 336. Don't think it's a 361. Based off of the postmark, I'm leaning towards the 336 Ochre. What's interesting to note is that the watermark is inverted and there doesn't appear to be a listing for an inverted variety in the cat. It only lists a sideways variety. Is this because its quite common with this stamp, or is it a nice little rarity?

Thanks for your post, Gavin ( gotstamps85). From the front, it looks like a pretty nice stamp! If the key element to its identification is the watermark, then it would really help if you could show us an image of the back so that hopefully we can see what is going on there. Thanks!

OK, I've had a crack at it. Not the easiest WM to snap.

What I collect: I collect world wide up to 1965 with several specialty albums added due to volume of material I have acquired. At this point I am focused on Canada and British America. I am always on the lookout for stamps and covers with postmarks from communities in Queens County, Nova Scotia. I do list various goods including stamps occasionally on eBay as hdm50

I do not use Stanley Gibbons but on searching I see that SG366 is a rose 9 pence. SG361 is a yellow bister and that appears to be the colour of your stamp. I cannot help on the watermark varieties.

Well, I don't have an SG Catalogue handy at the moment, but it definitely looks like the V and Crown watermark, and it certainly appears to be inverted.

The colour on my screen tells me Ochre but pale so I am going for SG#299a. The watermark looks upright and the large top of the thin leg of the 'V' tells me watermark 33. The cancel blanks out parts of the crown so I am going for SG#299a.

Londonbus1, Not so sure about it being 299a, if it is , it should have watermark 19 with the the short straight lines over the outer 2 crown points. Rob

Unless I'm missing it in the cat, 299 onwards uses WM 33. It's definitely Not WM 19. And now that Londonbus1 mentioned it, it does look like WM 33 rather than 82.

Londonbus1, My SG Catalogue, 2019, Commonwealth and British Empire Stamps, 1840-1970 shows Watermark 19 for the set of stamps SG293-304., which includes SG299a. Rob

OK, I've just realised how the catalogue listing works. π It should be a 299b then?

I'm With Michael Londonbus1 I think it is wmk 33 (slightly fatter) rather than wmk82, certainly not wmk 19 .so I suggest 299a is correct. As to Upright or inverted I think the watermark image as shown has been flipped relative to the front image, so though as shown it looks upright, yes, gotstamps85 is correct in identifying it as an inverted watermark. However, this and other watermark curiosities in the Australian colonies are not listed in the SG catalogue for the simple reason they happen all the time. There is a note to this effect at the beginning of Australia in the catalogue before New South wales

This is why I don't trust my own judgement on identifying stamps, so I simply use the numbers that the sellers listed.

Just to throw the cat amongst the pigeons, would not the late use, 1900, more readily suggest 336a?
(Okay, it's 3.30 in the morning and I'm in a mischievous mood π )

Might have to send it to SG themselves and ask them to determine its catalogue number π

All good fun !!! I seem to have erred in my positioning of the cancel and I can see now (it's morning and I am more awake than last night !) it's an inverted watermark. But I'll stick to my Cat.No as I have checked again and the colour is a good match. (computer screens can often lie though.......)
