Hello all,
I'm an amateur collector who dusted off the stamp collection during the pandemic and am getting back into the hobby after a few decades.
I prefer to collect used stamps because I like to see where the stamp has been (if there's a nice cancellation!) and because I like how a cancellation can sometimes add visual interest to the base stamp design (I have one stamp where three people are looking up into the corner of a stamp and a cancellation happens to track their line of sight). I also have a soft spot faulty/imperfect/damaged stamps (not errors) because I think they need love too and those are very welcome in my collection. Same with back-of-book and Cinderellas.
I have a respectable collection of Canadian classics and am looking to build out my collection into recent years. I also have a solid slice of South African stamps and those hold a particular interest for me. After catching up sorting items I had on hand, I realized that I love the luck-of-the-draw with mixed packets and kiloware. A local collector recently told me that 'you'll never be bored collecting worldwide', and, after reflecting on this, I agree. So I'm right at the start line of collecting worldwide with some kiloware on the way. I'm hoping to especially build a robust collection of Japanese stamps.
Meanwhile, I'm also getting my child interested in stamps with some topical collections. Special interests are trains, space, and science.
Looking forward to being part of the community,
Shadow

Welcome! I, too, love a good cancellation over a mint stamp.

Welcome! I consider most of us amateur collectors as opposed to professional collectors! We are at different levels of collecting - general, intermediate, and advanced - but in many different ways. To me, sort of like evolution of man, when one gets beyond just pile of unorganized stamps and start organizing them you have moved up to the second rung on the ladder.

It's nice to hear that, angore! When I've been looking at stamp-related websites, I was getting the impression that most stamp collectors were super serious professional collectors and I was kind of wondering if there was room for the amateur. Looking forward to learning more about the diversity of collectors here.

What I collect: Used only - Australia, Great Britain, Canada, Ireland, Western Europe, and Scandinavia, from 1900 to date. That keeps me busy. To be honest I am trying to avoid becoming a WW collector.

Welcome Shadow - I too enjoy used stamps. I collected as a child and as a young woman up until I was in my early 30s - life motherhood work etc meant I did not have time to collect until many years later. My mother collected - she ran things like the school stamp club and later in her life was president of the local stamp club. She also competed with her collection but was never as you describe a professional. Anyway her collections were sold when she had to go into care. I inherited a large accumulation (crates of the stuff) that included kiloware. While sorting through some of it I rediscovered the fun of stamps. Enjoy your stamps and the forum!
