This is my first post and I was curious about choice of catalogue by Newfoundland collectors.
I have just re-openned up my Newfoundland collection for the first time in almost 25 years.
I seem to have 3 catalogues, an ancient WW Scott, a couple of Unitrade from the 90's and a late 90's Newfoundland Specialised Stamp Catalogue (NSSC).
Certainly the NSSC seems to the one with the greatest depth but it uses a different cataloguing number system than the other two.
I am curious; as I re-start my collection, which numbering system is the best to use in my stamp descriptions.
Thanks,
John

As you mentioned, Unitrade uses the Scott numbering system. Dealers who sell Newfoundland stamps will use Scott or Unitrade numbers, unless they're overseas. I never heard of the NSSC catalog, so I can't opine on that. I've never seen it used in auction listings, so some dealers may be unfamiliar with it.
I collect airmail stamps, and use Scott numbers where possible. Unitrade is more specialized, and some of its listings are not shown by Scott. I use Unitrade numbers in my album when Scott listings aren't available.
In my collection, I also sometimes use Sanabria numbers. Sanabria was an airmail catalog; the last complete edition was published in 1966. I have never had to use Sanabria on my Canadian and Newfoundland pages. Scott is pretty thorough, and Unitrade is positively meticulous.
If you create your album, use whatever you please. That's the point of doing it yourself. When working with dealers, I'd use Scott, and Unitrade as a backup. I'd save NSSC for super-specialized items.

The NSSC is still being produced, albeit only as an ebook, not hardcopy. The 2023 edition was recently released. www.nfldstamps.com/

Thanks for the link, I meant to post it but you beat me to it. I can especially recommend not only the catalogue but their 2 illustrated stamp albums which are beautifully laid out and are quite inexpensive.

Thanks djcmb for that link. Are any pictures of watermarks included in their text? I'm rather cheap when it comes to buying books and catalogs.$100 is pretty steep price to pay for information that in my opinion should be shared for free or at the least more reasonable. Can't remember now the circumstance but few years ago some information I was looking for was also being held ransom. It has set the tone for me that these schemes do zero to promote the hobby! Just my own feelings.

I believe there are sample pages of the catalogue shown on the site, and if I remember right, not only are the various watermarks shown, their variant orientations are shown and priced.

I have WALSF N.S.S.C. 2024 e-book, bought last week at $160 C - 980 pages - a beast with different format than Scott or Unitrade 2023 Canada Specialized (Provinces section), which I prefer. Walsh cat is called by many the bible of Newfoundland stamps, has its own numbers, details, etc - For me it is a reference book only - As said, UNITRADE is my best (between the three).

Having the new Stanley Gibbons, an older Walsh and a recent Unitrade I find the Unitrade the easiest to use but the certainly the others are good references.
