NEW YORK CITY, STATION X
I think the letter "X" has an emotional draw to those in the English-speaking world, at least to me it does.
The letter "X" brings to mind the designation for experimental aircraft such as Chuck Yeager's "X-1" in which he broke the sound barrier and survived; and also the "X-15" rocket plane of early space exploration adventures of my youth.
One can't forget the remarkable automobile, the Jaguar "XK-E." And the "X-rated" movies of the 1960s. Malcolm-X chose the letter for his name.
On a tamer thought, "X" has represented the unknown in mathematics. The Romans couldn't count to 10 without it. Furthermore, what kid didn't yearn to possess Superman's X-ray vision?
So when I encountered this Penalty Permit envelope from "STA. X" and its bold "X" duplex postmark, well I couldn't not buy it.
In reality, this Station X postmark is quite benign, just another letter-designated postal station. I must admit, I don't even know where it was located.

I save "Church Street Station", etc. when I find them, but I've never seen a "Project X" before. Wonder if that was reserved for the New York Post Office Department; I don't think I've ever seen a cover from them before either.
