If you use Michel then you’re familiar with their system of listing stamps from blocks / souvenir sheets with unique major catalog numbers. As I buy collections to fill the gaps (it’s cheaper!), I end up with a boatload of duplicates. I actually really like the Michel system and decided that instead of selling all the cheapie duplicate blocks for peanuts, I’d break a few of them down into singles. You know what, I REALLY like the result! The stamps seem so different seen as individual singles. It would be even better if I could find POSTALLY USED, right? But, as long as the Michel price is the same for either format, I figure why not? Does anyone else do this?

I’ve been known to do that to remove an “orange” item.

I do that too so I will buy 2 of each 1 to keep whole and 1 to break up. But I will say my heart skips a beat as I do the first stamp.

I have often bought miniature and souvenir sheets and then split them to use as postage, I figure that if this isn't done then these are for collectors only and not for postage. I am happy to get individual stamps from these sheets.

WOW this topic is interesting! Breaking up for postage is a whole nother level but how else would you get postal used ones I just never even thought about it. Then do you break up CTOs? They are not postal used... So many twist and turns I am loving this thread!

Big difference between Souvenir Sheets (rare in Canada), CTOs (never buy them) - Breaking up what you collect (not talking about Plate blocks in quantity ..)I wonder how Xavier hrdoktorx thinks about this in France (he must be in Belgium presently) !!

I do like to save the singles as well as the whole sheets. I don't usually break them apart to get a single unless there is some damage to the sheet.

Yes I have and would still
In some instances I have found blocks for an overall better price than singles, and with S/S I can often get a S/S sheet for less the the individual stamps (and I hunt for S/S with a flaw in the non-stamp area (heavy hinge, spots, crease, etc)

Blocks are kept for posterity (PBs) I do have some nice complete sheets (for posterity......) In friendship - René

renden (René) if you will recall the strip of stamps that i recently sent you? I purchased a full sheet, separated into strips, and singles. I saw little reason for the full sheet and the strip and the singles better suited my needs. (and I had some dupes!!! ) France 1937 PEXIP S/S Ceres . It is less to find one with an issue (as an full S/S) ,or some other less virtuous detail, than it is to but the 4 stamps sindividually ( I may have one coming as we "chat", waiting to see if my offer has been accepted!)) always in friendship!!! What I collect: Used only - Australia, Great Britain, Canada, Ireland, Western Europe, and Scandinavia, from 1900 to date. That keeps me busy. To be honest I am trying to avoid becoming a WW collector.

I have broken used and mint minisheets if they are damaged in some way. Sometimes - particularly if they came in a job lot - the corners can be dinged around. Then I break them up becasue the stamp themselves are not damaged and they look a whole lot better.

To complete the album Germany 1990 - 2000, I am forced to tear souvenir sheets. These stamps were issued only in souvenir-sheet format (Michel Block 21) but also have catalog number Michel 1472. I found duplicates for these souvenir-sheets, but it is more difficult in my country to procure protective bags. The method of pre-printed albums is less used (many collectors prefer to spend money on stamps and on their storage in stockbooks)

The catalogs and commercial albums impose collecting rules that can lead one to break up sheets. I do not like breaking up blocks or sheets but the reverse may be true. The album wants the block or sheet and one only has singles especially those that collect used.

angore Al and gstamps - excellent points about albums forcing a collector to use a specific format. Arranging used singles in a preprinted album is a prickly problem. I’ve seen collections where - even in hingeless albums - collectors are forced to hinge used singles over the block illustration. That’s one of the reasons I switched to Vario and Hagnar - freedom to arrange and display what I have however I wish without mounts and hinges. You know the albums & supplements are so expensive that the costs are not that different. And, Rene, renden , you’re right to cringe at breaking up sheets. Trust me, the ones I dismantle are cheap, modern, dime a dozen items. I would never do that to a classic! Thanks for all the interesting posts about this practice. I find Jeff’s JeffS topical collector situation completely understandable. All the extraneous stamps would detract from the thematic.

I custom make each page for my Canadian Collection. As I concentrate on Plate Blocks, there is no preprinted album that I could use. For my other collecting interests, I use the Steiner Album Pages. But, if I have items that are not listed on the Steiner pages I will customize an extra page to add the items.

Here are France Yvert 348 -351, all 4 part of the 1937 PEXIP S/S (Yvert # BF3). Singles are difficult ot find and often as much (or more as a sum total) than a complete sheet. Cancelled stamps all seem yo have been canceled at PEXIP, but could have been postally used, but I have only one example where all 4 were on a single envelope (and it sold for an eye-popping amount). I have been searching for S/S with flaws, tears, folds, stains, (to break down) but even these command a nifty price. It is not uncommon to find sheets that have been trimmed down to make them easier (I guess) mount... sometimes neatly trimmed, other times, not so much, or the sides have been folded under to make the mounting size smaller. This was originally just the 4 stamps with gutters between each two, and it had been separated at the perforations (and they were not real careful with the 50c...). One of the gutters had a stain, but for my needs, this was no concern amnd I can live with the short perfs. It was offered by an auction house and after it was re-listed a 2nd time I made an offer I didn't really expect them to accept, but here it is! Now to make a page to face the full S/S,
