Apologies if this is an old topic that has been discussed at great length but as a newbie I hope you will make allowances. I was wondering if anyone noticed a crazy item on eBay: When I made the mistake of watching it, I received this generous discount offer It was amusing because I do have one of these items. And it didn't cost very much. I found it tucked in the back of a stockbook of mixed GB that came from a local stamp fair (in Braintree, Essex, UK) about a year ago. I admit I don't have the newspaper article but can a torn page really be worth that much? Shortly after getting the "egg", I was tempted by the cover below on eBay, but I managed to resist buying it. I think it was priced in tens of pounds, not thousands. This article is probably familiar to many but it suggests the labels have very little value. Is that fair?

The poached egg test strip label for coin operated vending machines is a nice curiosity, not however rare or expensive. You can usually get them for a £ or two.
It is irksome and I suppose amusing when sellers on eBay who know little or nothing about stamp values “kite fly” ridiculous prices such as your example. More than likely if you check the seller’s other items they will be bric-a-brac or clothing….not stamps.
I have been watching another idiot seller tyronweb who has had a set of GB George V jubilee 4 values at £6300, listed as “extremely rare” for over a year now! Nice mint quartet can be had any day of the week for £1.99.

The word "rare" must be the most over-used word on Ebay followed by "scarce".
