leefranks711 I have been to 2 Stampex exhibitions and have found that prices are generally higher than at other shows. However, there are more dealers and more choices ,so if you have the time to explore and check things out,you might be able to find a few good deals. Anglobob What is a good deal, in $C and not € or £ !

leefranks711Do check out that Stanley Gibbons U tube video that Clive posted above.it has useful information. At Stampex you will find a whole range of prices from really quite modest for a half decent example up to £1000s for spectacular from Michael Chipperfield. Other specialists like Bill Barrell or AJ Lajer will have a range to chose. Check the margins and the back . If there are 4 clear margins and no thins you will find a price range between £80 and £150 . With 3 margins but no other faults expect to pay £40+ Meantime look at what is on sale on eBay to judge quality and pricing so you go prepared. There is no substitute for knowledge.

[Posted by former member @ataylor15]Evening all, I was suggested to re-post one of my comments to this thread, so apologise if you have already seen this post. I have been reading about stamps the last few weeks, and thought it would be great to own some British Stamp History. I therefore acquired two Penny Black stamps (see attached). I have been reading about the plates and informed the TK is plate 5 and SI is plate 1b. I paid £155 (SI) and £123 (TK) on Ebay. I may have overpaid, however, still very happy with the purchases. If anyone has any thoughts on any of the above or anything else, happy to hear them! Thanks, Adam P.S. I was recommended the Stanley Gibbons presentation, very enlightening.

Might have paid a little over the price but if you are happy - great - this is a very speculative market - just sold one 50% of what you paid but not on the Ebay-Hipstamp-Delcampe sites and the stamp has a nice postmark and is a Sc # 1 with borders René

Great stuff Adam (@ataylor15) and thanks for showing!
I can re-iterate Alex's ( vikingeck) call for individuals to watch the Stanley Gibbons video originally shared by Clive( clivel). The presentation is a good one and well worth the ten minutes of one's time. Seeing your Penny Blacks reminded me of the famous philatelist referenced near the end, "Quality remains long after the price is forgotten" Your two penny blacks are little gems and I think, given the current market from both auction houses and professional dealers, are well worth the monies spent. Enjoy them :-)
At the same time, given Alex's feedback to Lee ( leefranks711) in an earlier post, "a price range between £80 and £150, would corroborate you did well... Happy collecting!

Thanks for all the info (@ataylor15 ) . I’d be happy to pay that sort of money for 4 margin examples in that condition. They look very nice. I’ve asked Mrs Cruncher if she will buy me one for Christmas. I can but hope.

Happy for you but choose it yourself and ask 1-2 members what they think about it prior to buying - Saw some over evaluated Penny Blacks out there, a bummer !! René

( renden) Yes I think she would be asking me to chose it René. I’ve still got to ask nicely and do a bit of creeping 1st. Probably best coming from a genuine source rather than Ebay although there are some bonafide dealers that sell on that platform. I would love to have it evaluated here 1st though. I have very little QV here as it’s always been out of my reach price wise.

Here are my examples of my Penny Black and my Two Pence Blue. Not the finest examples but they were very affordable.

Amongst a huge pile of almost impossible to sell material from the 1980s stamp investment boom was this Penny Black in a fancy folder with a certificate( who needs a certificate when a genuine one is easy to identify and confirm) . All part of the promo I guess to draw in inexperienced collectors during an investment boom. however having said my little gripe, it is not a bad example even if it is only 3 margins. There are no tears or thin spots, colour is strong intense Black, the light Maltese Cross is there but doesn’t detract . I reckon it is plate 8 a good looker . So what’s it worth in today’s market ? I have listed it on eBay at £39.99 opening bid, I would hope to do a bit better by auction but we will see. If anyone here cares to make me an offer I can pull it off eBay any time in the next 5 days.

On 07/19/2021, I posted:
"I've never owned a Penny Black either. Early on, I saw the GB Queen Victoria stamps as too much $$$$$ (I only collect Mint when possible) so I skipped the GB Victoria issue altogether. Thought of having a "Loner Queen" page but I've never liked the idea of single stamp pages. I might pick up a nicely centered copy someday, but as a targeted stamp, it's a low priority for me at this time. Rob"
The idea of actually owning one kicked in the same day after I wrote the above post. It was on my mind a lot for a couple of weeks and after much research, led me to take the plunge in late August. I wanted a copy with four margins, a Red cancel and my initials RL. I found one that I liked and could afford from Bloxhams. No sooner did it arrive than I wanted another one with a Black cancel and my initials. That one arrived in mid September. Not realizing it at the time, I'd planted the seed for what was becoming a collection. Once having the first two, I wanted to know a lot more about them so began acquiring as much reference material as available (another post on its own). After considerable reading, found I was hooked on all of the Line Engraved stamps and began acquiring examples of several different issues, again having my initials. I also discovered that as much as I love the Line Engraved issues, I'm turned off by the surface printed issues that followed which is fortunate because it helped me narrow the target field.
At first, I was adamant about only collecting copies with my initials but soon discovered it was too narrow a view. There are too many examples with wonderful cancellations and features I'll never find with my initials so I've widened my scope to include any combination of letters if the stamp warrants it. I'm very attracted to crisp Maltese Crosses.
At this point my hope is to also assemble a complete set of SG8 Plate singles with my initials. So far I've been able to be fussy about centering, margins, cancels etc. bypassing the many poor copies available but I suspect that down the road, finding some of the plate numbers won't be easy with strict condition criteria. I'll soon find out.
Here is my first Penny Black, SG2 Plate 4 More to follow Rob
