Latvia Semi-Postal Issue, 1928Latvia, ScB29-B33, depicting President Janis Cakste, complete set of 5 According to the Scott Catalogue: "The surtax helped to erect a monument to Janis Cakste, 1st President of the Latvian Republic." As a note on provenance, these stamps were given to me by Londonbus1 when he came to visit me in Aix-en-Provence in 2018. Thanks, LB1! Sorry that this post is so long overdue.

Latvia, Regular Postal Issue, 1923-1925Latvia, Sc 113-116, First four values from a set of 17 stamps, Watermark: Wavy Lines (Sc Wmk 181) This classic design of definitive stamps from Latvia depicts three sets of arms (as in coats of arms) and three stars, which represent the three cultural regions or provinces at the time of issue: Vidzeme, Kurzeme, and Latgale. In those days, the region of Kurzeme also included Zemgale and Selija, which are nowadays considered as separate cultural regions. I also received these stamps from Londonbus1 during his visit to Aix in 2018.

Latvia, Overprinted Regular Postal Issue, 1932 Commemorating the Latvian Products Exhibition held in RigaLatvia, Sc 164-167, complete set of 4, overprinted to commemorate the Riga Exhibition which took place from 10th-18th September 1932 These stamps were also a gift to me from Londonbus1 during his visit to Aix-en-Provence in 2018. As with the non-overprinted regular issue stamps from this series, there seem to be many very nice, legible CDS postmarks on used stamps of Latvia during the classic era. I have a special weakness for overprints and surcharges, so I really like this set. Thanks again, Michael!

Here's a mini souvenir sheet issued last month by Latvia's postal service to support the people of Ukraine, with half of the proceeds going to a charity working there. I ordered one when it was announced, and it arrived quickly in the envelope shown. The inscriptions read "Glory to Ukraine" on the selvage and "We are with you," according to Google Translate. Nice stamps for a very good cause.

A nice block of 12 of the Red Cross charity stamps (semi-postals) from 1920, probably SG51, 40k,55k on the back of 10 mark German banknote, showing the complete design.

Nice to see a complete banknote block .I have tried to reconstruct one from individual stamps. An almost impossible task as registration was all over the shop .so instead of finding 12 individuals to construct a block I needed twice that number due to overlap and partial overlap.

Found this Latvia series in an old Scott International from the 40s - Pic taken by Iphone as I do not want to unhinge the stamps Past research did tell me they were never issued - looking in 2021 Scott Specialized and Yvert & Tellier, cannot find them but Hipstamp sells the set

What I collect: I collect world wide up to 1965 with several specialty albums added due to volume of material I have acquired. At this point I am focused on Canada and British America. I am always on the lookout for stamps and covers with postmarks from communities in Queens County, Nova Scotia. I do list various goods including stamps occasionally on eBay as hdm50

My 2000 Scott classic specialized catalogue gives this reference to your set renden Rene. I have the imperforate set in my collection as well. I do have one value in the perforated too.

René ( renden), thanks for posting your stamps. Not to put too much of a damper on things, but as noted in the catalogue excerpt posted by Hugh ( hdm1950), “reprints and counterfeits exist”. In my experience, forgeries of this issue are plentiful, so you may want to check Morten’s ( classicalstamps) website. I have a good reference book on these forgeries back in California, but I don’t have access to it at the moment. Anyway, just FYI. I have a pile of these acquired over the past 10 years or so, and once I get back to California, I need to go through them to see if I have any genuine ones at all.

Chris, unable to get out of your comments - these are in an old album (Scott Junior) of the 40s-50s and it is interesting that people will forge a low CV unlisted series........I guess from your experience....it happens - they stay where they are and no studies (so CV at about $2 per specimen LOL !!)

coming back to daniel's post - 27th April last year - for the block of 12 Red Cross charity stamps, here is what is possibly SG 62 (red and slate), an imperf. example of the 1 ruble 30 kopeck value which came from my charity shop purchase yesterday. Unfortunately, my Gibbons Europe catalogue is dated 1961, so I stand to be correct on the SG No. - my replacement 1976 catalogue doesn't include Latvia - perhaps someone might check this for me please. This 1920 four value group are mostly perforated and appear to have been issued on three separate Bolshevik bank note papers - assume these are all different to daniel's paper. The bank note paper shown here for this imperf. value agrees with the SG catalogue description which reads ................... " (c) On back of red, green and brown Bolshevist notes. Imperf." Sorry, can't read the cancellation, and condition looks to be v.g. though wouldn't dismiss the possibility of a forgery, so opinions appreciated please. thanks for looking. P.S. might the cancellation be showing part of the word 'LATVIJA'?

might the cancellation be showing part of the word 'LATVIJA'? I'm as close as I ever get to "certain" that that's what it says. Current postmarks from Latvia always have the country's name in the bottom part of the circle, and so do the relatively few interwar postmarks I've seen.

The SG Simplified Stamps of the World is not very good for these, the listing is confusing. A good purchase. Daniel

daniel - you're a gem, thanks for taking the time to investigate - so SG 57 I will catalogue it as then. Yes, agree, a good purchase, though not all my 'buys' are this useful.

daniel was kind to point out to me that these are Lithuanian matchbox labels. That makes sense given the motifs of the illustrations. Thank you for the correction.

Latvian stationery, issued on May 4th 1991, circulated to Leningrad on June 1991. The postage is paid by the Soviet stamp, as the Latvian stationery was not valid for the postage to Russia SSR. The special pm remembers the June 1941 Soviet deportation of Latvian rellevant people to Siberia.

Registered cover from Riga to Torroella de Montgrí (Catalonia), with a "300" stamp from the first overprint of Soviet stamps (December 1991) and another two (1 & 10) from the second one (April 1992). Note, the supressed "SS" (Socialist Sovietic") letters on the registration label. Left Riga on September 4th 1992 and arrived to Torroella de Montgrí on October 17th 1992.
