The 1st large is a forgery from business sheets 2022 I purchased one of those 2D barcoded forgeries too. They look remarkably authentic. Although I believe the 2D barcode is exactly the same for each stamp in the sheet. Royal Mail seem to be moving more and more towards using barcodes of various types as per this example: I wonder exactly what would happen to letters if forgeries are detected. Would they be returned to sender or would the recipient have to pay postage due? Daniel

Daniel I'm not sure what happens to the covers etc containing forged stamps these days. I know that Royal Mail used to pursue forgers vigorously with legal action, years ago. I expect it may be more difficult to catch the forgers these days especially when a lot of the forgeries are coming in from foreign countries. By the way having looked at the 1st large stamp using a magnifying glass the following differences can be seen to those of the genuine articles. 1. there is a thick rough printed edge around each of the different shapes of the bar code. 2. Line around the frame of the stamp. 3. No sign of a direction of print 4. A large break in print @ the front of the Queens eye 5. courser screening. daniel

A few more Machins to add to my specialist collection. Scanned with their associated Deegam profiles for identification. These none value indicators are mainly some of the earlier issues.

As you know, DeeGam lists the DOP on level 3. Are you storing the SA Security Definitives that are listed as coming from FDC's separately? These are usually DOP right. Are you tearing up the FDC's and stocking the individual Items in your specialised collection? I haven't had the heart to tear up the FDC's. What do you do? The following image is a page from my album. The missing stamps on this page are DG 780.3.1, 810.2.2, 870.1.2, 880.4.1 and 970 3.2. Looking forward to your answer.

Hi thunderbird1 I only collect unmounted mint Machins in my Deegam collection so none of them are from first day covers. The only used stamps I collect are commemoratives (except a few (definitive ones). I get some of the commemoratives from old damaged covers but they are secondary to my main GB collections. As far as I know the Machin stamps from covers are coil stamps which is one area I need to pursue, although I have quite a few coils direct from rolls. So to answer your question I don't take Machins from covers. Maybe I would if I collected used stamps but not at the moment. I obtain quite a few Machins from auctions when I get chance & others I purchase on eBay or direct from reliable dealers. Regards drblade.

So if I understand you correctly, seeing that the only source for the SA Security stamps with DOP right is from FDC's, this would mean that you wouldn't keep a DG profile in your specialist album - e.g. DG 870.1.2. Am I right? Have you seen DG N2.30.9 which is from a Sunday Times Wine Club promotion - also an 'only used' stamp. Like you, my intention is to store only mint stamps, but I guess I'm breaking my own rules for these 'only used' Machin stamps and have reserved a spot/profile for them in my album. I have examples of each of these, it's just that I keep the FDC's separately. Regards, thunderbird1.

Hi thunderbird1 I do have the used profiles in sequence in my albums but not the stamps (yet). I read about the wine club stamps some time ago & I've seen some on eBay but never purchased them. I've got the 870.1.2 profile in place but not the stamp, just the D1 D1 before it. I've also got quite a few Machins that do not fit with any profiles I can find at the moment. Mainly "abnormal" phosphor bands. One I found the other day with green phosphor + A.O.P. which also had a very seeable white line across the queens neck area. I'm on a live stream at an auction at the moment so have to go. Regards drblade.

I received the scanned 1st class None Value Indicators this morning & just about to add them to my specialist collection. The Deegam numbers are shown alongside the stamps. N1.15.1 is SG 1667 2 bands with yellow fluor from HD 24. N1.23.2 is from the Harrison coil strip 2 bands with AB phosphor. The envelope containing the nvi's has a MOVEMBER slogan cancellation via Aberdeen Mail Center. Which famous TSF member do we know from this neck of the woods??

I received the scanned 1st & 2nd class large none value indicators yesterday to add to my specialist Machin collection. The 2nd class large stamps are almost completed now in line with the Deegam system of collecting Machins. The missing items are now mainly phosphor errors & iridescent overprint shifts which may take some time to source/find.

A few more Machins received today with their respective Deegam profiles alongside them detailing all the info you need for each stamp. The commemorative stamp on the envelope is from The Industrial Revolutions Prestige Book issued by Royal Mail in August 2021.

I decided to go through a bunch of used 3p Ultramarine Machins. The good news is I found my first JET phosphor Machin! The majority are not very reactive under shortwave, Varieties 1. phosphor screen, phosphor spacing - usually ignore 2. Arabic Gum vs PVA - ignore 3. 2B vs CB 4. Tablet positions (4 variations) - important sometimes to narrow down 5. FCP / OCP - evaluating 6. sheets, coil, booklets - only if some significant other difference 7. screened values - collect these I got stuck for a while since I was separating OCP and FCP papers and not finding many obvious differences. I have mint samples but seems like used FCP one are not nearly as "hot" as the mint ones. It is known that the difference between is NOT two extremes but continuous range, Here is a quote by Douglas Myall (author (RIP) of Machin Handbook) regarding OCP vs FCP. "Bear in mind that an OCP stamp may have been exposed to daylight or prolonged UV and been converted thereby to FCP." I got this magnifier in a giveaway. It is 60x power with both normal and LW UV. The odd aspect is that it is side illuminated and this arrangement works great for checking for screened values. These details get washed out more with an inline light source!!!

Another frustrating day. Deegam defines value tablet positions for all Machins and since I had bunch of the 3p ultramarine I would spend some time checking to improve my knowledge. Of course, trying to check for measurements at two decimal places can be tough with a clear scale marked with 0.5mm increments. Therefore, I used my USB microscope and calibrated it at the set magnification so I could get better measurements. In this process, I determined my USB microscope platform is not parallel to the camera (diving board type platform) so that was adding to mess as I tried to get a consistent process. I used PerfoMASTER400 to double check and now getting reasonable matches. In the end, I was not getting measuresments matching Deegam, So, I contacted Deegam (Hanns) and he stated that the tablet position can vary from what the catalog shows and can vary across the SAME sheet. Conclusion - I have given up studying tablet position but I did nail down my method to measure stamps close to two decimal places. Deegam: 3p positons includes ultramarine, rose red, and regionals Deegam: Example listing, Measurements using USB microscope measuring tool. In this example, the vertical measurement is off about 0.2 mm due to calibration was done horizontally. I ended up with supporting the flimsy diving board type platform (less flexible) and put the calibration scale diagonally.

I also nearly gave up using the Deegam value settings because my measurements were different from those shown in the Deegam lists. Then I realised that these were just examples, and there were much more detailed tables in Chapter 12 of the Handbook. These are very helpful if you have an idea of where your stamp came from, e.g. booklet, sheet or coil, as they give the settings by cylinder number. I use a 10x loupe magnifier with illumination and a 0.1mm scale, and am finding much better agreement between my measurements and Deegam’s. Gary

When measuring with a loupe, it is important to keep eye in same position as you read since parallax issues can really affect how you read the scale.
