Advertising bags and cards, these for Britain's 'Stampex' events, the National show. The bags, sometimes printed in various sizes were given to each of the dealers' stands by the organizing committee. The cards, advertising upcoming events, were left at the entrance and other relevant points around the venue.

I just came across some images from the time I was preparing to sell my Palestine collection. I wonder sometimes why I did it. But I never give myself an answer. Oh well. No used crying over spilt milk......so they say. Oops ! OK, for old times sake, here are a few probably seen already but it is a memory....for me at least. I wonder where they are now.......

Here's an advertisement from a (reproduction) copy of the October 1934 Stamp Magazine showing a full page of what Selfridges Stamp department in London had to offer. Those offers include a full set of Canada Jubilees and the dollar values of the USA Columbus series ! Oh to go back to those days !!

Israel is well known for producing Tete-Beche examples of their issues, especially so of the earlier and definitive types. Most were printed that way for ease of cutting into booklet panes. But many sheets or large blocks reach the open market. Less often seen are Tete-Beche examples of ATM's or Computer-Vended labels. The one below was on offer from Israel Post to visitors at 'Jerusalem 2010', a Bi-National Stamp Exhibition held in the Capital. The Labels show the value for the regular letter postage rate at the time and the sheet cost NIS17 with no mark-up. The Tete--Beche Self-Adhesive sheet shows scenes of Jerusalem in the central gutter including the Western Wall and Absalom's Pillar. Note the positions of the cancellations on each strip !!!

darrenk.......1878 issue De La Rue. Watermark garter. Cat Value in 2008 £3.50 so not much more today at a guess. But that's for a used copy so if your mint has full gum then worth a little more.

I've had a bit of time for stamps the last few days as the dreaded 'Long Covid' has come back to haunt me again ! Suffering my 5th bout of Flu this winter.......except it's spring now so really not fair. It has meant a bit less babysitting and the way I feel all I want to do is sit and drink tea and water. Energy levels are almost zero !! But playing with stamps has helped relieve the pain and discomfort. My armoured car stamps arrived in two days from Tel Aviv, something of a record. Still no news from the other lots missing since October 7th. Looking forward to another sleepless night and a few more hours sorting stamp mess. Wonderful. Londonbus1

Special JNF receipts were produced both in Palestine/Israel and abroad for contributions made to certain projects. They are hard to find, some are hugely attractive and are sought after as a sideline to the Stamps and tags. The one below is from the United States for a $5 contribution towards land redemption and purchase. It was issued in 1947. There are other valued receipts in this series.

Here's a couple of road safety propaganda labels, at least the block issued by the National Road Safety Council. An update on the above block which I posted a few days ago. I have just been doing a spot of reading and I came across this stamp in a revenue catalogue !! Traffic Tax stamps were in use in Israel from 1950-1974. They were used on: Life Insurance Policies Car Insurance Policies Police Traffic Accident forms Medical examination forms due to Traffic Accident Hospitalization forms due to Traffic Accident The block shown is from the 2nd series, Perf 10. It appears they have quite a high catalogue value !! There exists also the same stamp but 'with a long tab' which I will scan later. A number of 'long tab' varieties are listed in the catalogue. I mentioned in the earlier post (in quote above) that these were issued by the National Road Safety Council. The tax paid went to cover the Council's operating expenses. The value on the stamps shown is 10 Israel Pounds.

For the International Stamp Exhibition in 2008, Israel Post issued 2 Prestige Booklets aimed at Youth. With hoards of schoolchildren attending shows here in Israel, and with the items being offered at a cut-price, the idea was a good one. Something I would like to see elsewhere. One of the booklets was entitled 'Noah's Ark and the Flood' and one of the panes included was similar to the regular issue S/S but in Self-Adhesive format and yellow border. With wavy-line die-cuts. They quickly sold out !! Here is the Souvenir Sheet Pane.

I sold my GB Smilers Sheets long ago at a Car Boot sale in Essex. I remember my dear Mum was with me and she couldn't believe someone would pay so much for stamps !! Little did I know then. Little did she know too. In 2005, Royal Mail issued the 1st Series of Smilers Booklet Stamps. Self Adhesive and mostly parts or smaller versions of previously issued stamps. I could look back to this 'new' issue as a defining moment in my hobby. But I didn't dwell on it then, at least I don't remember doing so. These were the days of exciting but soon-to-be-gone MSN Forums and the first philatelic connections I ever made. 'Stamps of Great Britain' was one of those and it was busy, busy. With live Chat too it was a great outlet for information and social contact. This issue also got me writing Stamp Stories and one of them got into magazines and journals. But it was the beginning of the end of my love affair with British Stamps. But once again, I didn't know it then. My first experience of being a Moderator was at SoGB and we decided to purchase Smilers Sheets from that 2005 issue to share and give away as prizes. So here is the 'Hello' block from a sheet. I have the others somewhere and will add them when found. The old MSN web address, wow! What a memory. But soon it was gone, then yahoo groups were gone and then..........well, the fun had to end there and begin somewhere else. That's life. But when I saw this block earlier the memories came flooding back...... SG#2568

Any excuse for an overprint ! However, this one has a poignant feel to it. 'Philatex' was a great bourse/fair with many of the smaller dealers in attendance and some lesser known and unusual sellers. The one advertised here, during the Festival of Stamps, 2010 was the last. And it was also one of the best, as was the venue, my favourite for a philatelic event anywhere. So it's a bit sad to post it if truth were told. R.I.P. Philatex. Londonbus1

More labels from Allan Leverson's Bridger & Kay archive. The company and Strike Post Service were discussed towards the bottom of page 1 of this topic. Some of the types below were shown on cover in those previous posts. The third image down below shows a sheet of labels (UK-Germany) but missing the light blue. I saw a number of 'errors' when I sat with Allan at London 2010 and he said most were genuine. It was most likely a sales tactic although he was a nice guy and very informative. I have never sat so long at a dealer table during an Exhibition or Fair. In any case, it worked. I spent !!!

2010 Israel Birds sheetlet (with tabs) including the Hoopoe, Israel's National Bird. The Hoopoe was chosen after a survey in 2008. And yes, we see them every day they are delightful to watch. The set was also the theme of a Prestige Booklet issued at the same time.

1953 issue from the New York Office. Israel Tree Fund for Tu B'shvat. (the fifteenth day of the month of Sh'vat). Traditionally the holiday is about trees and fruit, both planting and eating ! In our village, the children would gather with their parents or teachers to populate a small area with new trees or add to other areas. Families would plant a tree in their garden. The stamp shown (in brown) also exists in green and dull green (both 5c) and was issued in booklets of 5 panes of 3x2 of the same value. Perf 12½

2008 Jerusalem of Gold. Naomi Shemer wrote 'Jerusalem of Gold' for the Israel Song festival in May 1967, just after the 19th Independence Day celebrations. The song is based on a Basque lullaby and old Jewish Poetry with references to the exile and a longing for Jerusalem, the Western Wall and Shuk. A few weeks later, the Six Day war broke out and on June 7th, the Western Wall and the Old City were freed from Jordanian Occupation. The Souvenir Sheet was issued in 2008 for the World Stamp Championship and International Exhibition and is based on the song and the poetry. Shown is a special pack containing the Jerusalem Reunification sheet stamp from the previous year and the Souvenir sheet which contains the highest denominated Israel Stamp since the currency devaluation of 1985. The sheet contains 22-carat gold leaf. The Imperf sheet was only available in the (very expensive) Exhibition Programme, a limited edition.
