There has already been some wonderful work done here with the Japanese National Park sheets. Here I would like to show some of the other souvenir sheets from Japan. I have long enjoyed collecting souvenir sheets. Some might say they are "too philatelic," but for me they are usually the best examples of a nation's printing and engraving abilities. By showing my sheets on a forum like this, I hope to get other collectors interested.  This is sc 395, issued for Philatelic Week 1947, first day 1 November 1947, print run 3 million. This and all of the late 1940s sheets were issued without gum or NGAI ( no gum as issued).  Sc 396 was issued to mark 50 years of rail service in Japan, first day 14 October 1947, print run 500,000.  Osaka Commuications Exhibition, 8 March 1948, print run 250,000. Althiugh almost the same as the next sheet, Osaka had two characters at the lower center, Nagoya has three.  And the Nagoya Communications Week sheet, 17 March 1948, print run 170,000. This example has a special red exhibition postmark. I still have a few more to share but please add your own if you can. |

The first japanese souvenir sheet issued after the war. Commemorating the 75th anniversary of the modern japanese postal service,it was sold at 3 Yen. The total print was 51.000,what makes it one of the more expensive s.s.
However there is more to it: There are two printings of this s.s.: The first was done in one step (2000), the second in two steps;the orange colour in one and the other colours in another (49.000). They are not easy to distinguish,unless you have both versions to compare. Naturally on sheets of the first version the distances between orange print and the other stamps does not vary,like it does in the second version.But the differences are not that obvious,what would make it easy to spot. The second difference is,that the first print looks more elevated,than the second one.That makes the colours deeper and more intensive. But again without reference specimens,this difficult to spot. In my opinion it can be best seen at the 15 Sen value:

 The s.s. for the Tokyo Philatelic Exhibition was issued on May 15th,1947. It is probably the most "difficult" s.s. of the 1940th. Unlike the ones,what were shown previously,this one is gummed. It´s extreme length,237 mm with a hight of 73 mm makes it difficult to handle and store. Many were folded,what makes them tear easily. They were sold in connection with an admission-ticket to the exhibition only. Although 302.100 were sold,relatively few of them have survived intact, so that it has become one of the more costlier s.s. of Japan.

Mishima Philatelic Exhibition, issued April,3rd,1948.Print 80.000 The overprint was applied on the Nagoya Exhibition s.s. (the one with the three characters) shown by captphil before. However a small number,200,of the Osaka Exhibition s.s., (the one with two characters) was also overprinted. Unfortunately I do not own that one.

What I collect: I collect world wide up to 1965 with several specialty albums added due to volume of material I have acquired. At this point I am focused on Canada and British America. I am always on the lookout for stamps and covers with postmarks from communities in Queens County, Nova Scotia. I do list various goods including stamps occasionally on eBay as hdm50

Some of these sheets have very low printings. Divide by unmounted mint, mounted mint, used and destroyed there can be very few in each category. I always wanted the 1949 postal week sheet but a single item was all I could stretch to.

Usually not considered to be a souvenir sheet,but a sheetlet of 5,the 1948 Philatelic Week issue, from Nov.29th.
There are two different directions of the perforation:

Yokohama International Trade Fair,
again no souvenir sheet,but a sheetlet,issued March 15th,1949.
Unlike the perforated version,what was printed in sheets of 50 and sold nation-wide, the imperforated sheetlet was sold at the venue of the trade fair only. Print: 100.000 sheetlets.

New Year 1950,issued Feb.1st,1950. Print: 902.000 This first "real" New Year souvenir sheet is the most interesting of all to me. It is the only imperforated one,with only a mock-perforation. Like all later ones it was not sold by the post-office,but was given as the 6th price in the great japanese New Year-Lottery. Although the print of 902.000 looks high in comparison to other souvenir sheets of the time,it is rather scarce and therefore one of the more expensive ones. (Michel € 350.- for mint,and € 360.- for cancelled)

This is the first of 4 s.s. with a single definitive,issued for no special occasion,in 1950/51. The loose stamp in mint,n.h. condition sells practically at the same price as the souvenir sheet. I just wonder what units (pairs,blocs etc.) might cost.
