As a moderator myself at another stamp forum, there are ways to get banned or get a timeout and some may include moderator bias. A few general ones are ignoring moderator instructions or challenging moderator actions.

Entered my preference - "Excel or similar" As a LinuxOS user, the LibreOffice suite has as one of its applications something called LibreOffice 'Calc'; basically a spreadsheet which more than meets my needs for maintaining my collections. I like the freedom a simple spreadsheet offers with being able to create what I need e.g. inventory, plating reference, etc. and not have to follow someone else's format.
Stick it in the cloud and it is easily accessible from anywhere...
Have fun and happy collecting!

Hi brookbam If you have the knowledge, write your own. VB.NET is a pretty good language as well as C#. As for phone access that should not be too difficult. Jerry B I started on a database...kind of fiddled around with a table...and then lost interest. I usually use VisualBasic for programming.
I've been playing around with StampManage and I really like it except there is no way to make a stamp album the way *I* want to make it...or at least nothing I can find. But I'm still playing with it. Right now StampManage is probably my go to program.
I've still been drumming ideas around in my head on that Access database yet.
All I know is I better get something going. I've been buying stamps and collections and I have nothing to track the stuff and no albums. And basically no time do work on either anyway. LOL. Mike

If I remember correctly, I did not care for their AlbumGen software. I know I am really finicky. That is probably why I ended up writing my own Access Database to track my eBay sales because I couldn't find anything to track it the way *I* wanted the information to track.
I don't know...maybe I should just break down and write my own database and be done with it. Mike

Entered my preference - "Excel or similar" As a LinuxOS user, the LibreOffice suite has as one of its applications something called LibreOffice 'Calc' Have fun and happy collecting! I used to use Linux, and I absolutely loved having emacs for my text editor. I returned to Windows mostly for one word: Quicken. (The other word is WordPerfect, but even though they still put out a new version every 2 years, they're behind the times and are actually less stable than in the Windows 2000 era. My wife still uses it.) I miss Linux to some extent, but Windows 10 and 11 surpass previous versions so I'm happy enough with them, and the software choices are still better. (Except emacs. There is a Windows version, but it was just a shadow of the real deal.) LibreOffice is wonderful. I don't have Microsoft® office because I don't need it. Calc is every bit as good as Excel for my purposes, and LibO Writer is much stronger IMHO than Word. ]I've still been drumming ideas around in my head on that Access database yet. All I know is I better get something going. I've been buying stamps and collections and I have nothing to track the stuff and no albums. And basically no time do work on either anyway. StampManage is basically a bunch of Access tables. I've never tried it, but I wonder if you could copy one of the databases out of StampManage and tune it directly in Access? Might be worth a try. I was pretty good at WordPerfect macros and did a bit of Visual Basic, but I realized I'd never be up to professional standards, so I gave it up. Part of it is that I'm a poet at heart - moody, sensitive, and somewhat inept at ADL skills - and part of it was that I took classes with a bunch of incompetent teachers and snothead students who had more experience than me and let me know it at every turn. But even beyond the static, I knew I wasn't getting much of anywhere. That and calculus were the two epic fails in my academic career. I did medieval and Renaissance literature in college. Wanna buy a pencil? angore , I think I saw on another thread that you have submitted additions and corrections to various StampManage databases. Did you ever hear back from anybody there or get an acknowledgement? I'm experimenting with it now and sort of accidentally uploaded a few years' worth of spiffed-up contemporary Croatia, and I'm wondering what to expect, if anything. (They had all the Scott numbers up to sometime in 2018, but the last several years were devoid of descriptions except for a few locomotive topicals.)

Just on this particular point, several people on here and a couple of other boards I frequent like AlbumEasy. The developer, clivel , participates on here. Some people who develop album pages with it also share them there, too. I would think it might be worth checking out: www.thestampweb.com/albumeasyAlso, another active participant on here, PostmasterGS , has developed several helpful software applications, one of which is to create album pages. Scroll down the page to take a look at it. (I use his PMGS StampFix program.) www.germanstamps.net/Both of these contributors generous offer these tools at no cost (although I think contributions are welcomed). I downloaded Scribus a couple of weeks ago, opened it up and saw it was basically Publisher and Draw so I closed it and that is as far as that went. That PMGS Stamp Album Page Generator looks interesting. I might download that and play around with it too.
Too many choices. There are so many features that I like about each program...which gives me ideas about building my own database...I'm still pondering this.
In the meantime, I'm bidding on more stamps...Some newer stuff that I am sorely lacking.

As another LibreOffice on Linux user, I also voted for "Excel or similar". Actually, I made a fair amount of headway in developing an inventory application a few years ago, I had signed up with Colnect so that my application could access their database via a programming interface.
I was hoping to release it as a free application for Windows,Linux and Mac, however, Colnect couldn't tell me IF or what they were going to charge for access to the data. So after a few weeks of fairly intensive part-time development work, I abandoned the project. I just couldn't see my way clear to investing any more time in a project that could be disabled in an instant by Colnect without any warning. Soon after abandoning it, I came into contact with "Collector Dave" who was developing World Stamp Collector This looked very promising as he had already accumulated a massive amount of stamp data. One of the features I convinced him to add was the ability to generate AlbumEasy album files directly which he did.
Unfortunately, Collector Dave has since disappeared. We communicated occasionally but his replies came further and further apart, I haven't heard from him for months now, which means unfortunately that it is probably the end of World Stamp Collector.

For those that replied "None". how do you keep track of what you have and what you need?
This would be my concern as well. The same can apply to many online services. For example, if you are renting access to the online Scott catalogs, if they folded or changed their business model, you could be left with nothing (lost your lease).
I chose StampManage because no matter what happens to Liberty Street I have all the data and can continue to use it. It is not locked so can exported to other platforms.
Yes, I have submitted well over 10,000 changes and expect they are adding based upon feedback. I cannot tell if they were added unless I do clean install (not migrating my database) since if you add something to the your database itself it will not be overwritten by their data. This is to protect your work. Someone had completely messed up Malaysia and worked with them to fix that. Email communication can be spotty.
The do rely on user contributions and have paid some to create entries. If you go to the far right in the data, you can see who (windows username) created it or modified it.

What I collect: I collect world wide up to 1965 with several specialty albums added due to volume of material I have acquired. At this point I am focused on Canada and British America. I am always on the lookout for stamps and covers with postmarks from communities in Queens County, Nova Scotia. I do list various goods including stamps occasionally on eBay as hdm50

For those that replied "None". how do you keep track of what you have and what you need? I had not entered this discussion angore because I am among the 'none' group. At this point of my collecting it would take the rest of my life to inventory everything. I had thought of maybe at least doing an inventory of countries I specialize in. If I were going to stamp shows to shop I guess I would create a list. My adds now are pretty well all done from auctions or eBay. When shopping I search by country with the album and catalogues out. The gaps/holes are not many. If I am buying old collections or box lots a quick look and I can pretty well tell if there is going to be anything I might be able to add to my world wide. World wide that I buy is only large lots just for the fun of the hunt. That is why I never sold off the world wide.

Hi clivel
I also was working with CollectorDave integrating my software with his. Then, poof! He disdappeared into the woodwork. In general my software does not incorporate any Microsoft, or other, Office software. It stores the stamp info within the stamp image file. If wanted I could finalize what I have and make it available. Note that due to the collaboration with CollectorDave my software and his should not impact each other. Unfortunately my software is for Windows only.

I understand hdm1950 - let's say it would take at least 6 years + to inventory your huge collection. I am still doing that on EZStamp and I have close to 50,000 done but more than 3/4 are done - some Countries have not been active much and I re-do the inventory when I have time to spare LOL! and try to create either Custom pages or Steiner pages (classics) for my favorites. Have not touched GB and Australia for some years though many are inventoried but need a re-do and additions. Same with USA. René

After reading some recent posts I thought I would clarify. My software database in no way tracks my complete collection. It would take way too long to enter every stamp I own. I currently only track my main collections: USA, Germany (and areas) and Machins. Anything past that would make collecting more of a chore than a hobby.

You do not need to inventory their entire collection but just areas they have a need to do it. You could just track what you want and not what you have. For some the wants will exceed the haves.
I have my Machin inventory in an excel file because I collect well beyond catalog and not going to enter the SG Specialized into a spreadsheet. It is a labor of love.
For my general collection, I have everything in StampManage and also scan every album page. I have purchased too many duplicates (what I already had) to not inventory. StampManage has a "range" add so if you have a large group you can add all at once.

Inventory? What’s an inventory? 🤔😜
you mean my little black book ? Otherwise I use none of the above
over the years I have collected , tired of , and sold on , my USA, GB, Denmark, Faroes, Schleswig Holstein….all gone .My only one country collection Samoa is already complete from 1880 to independence +10 (1972)and no temptation to go forward. The only stamps I hunt come few and far between, ie SamoaExpress from 1877and impossible high values of New Zealand 1914 occupation, Cape triangles , and classic 1st issues from 19th century Europe. My little black book is more than adequate.
my main collecting is in Postal history covers and as no two are ever the same who needs an inventory…..what am I looking for? Well I’ll know it when I see it !

I think I am going to settle on StampManage for my inventory program. I...just like it. It seems to do everything I want it to do and way way more. PLus it is based on MS Access which I am already familiar with. I know this is a bit off topic but I think I'm going to use AlbumEasy to generate my album pages. I've looked at pre-made albums and they all seem to have different shortcomings. I figure I'll give it a shot and if there are shortcomings in my albums...well...I know the guy to blame. Mike

Sorry, a bit late joining this party, too late to vote.
I use an Excel spreadsheet to keep up with my USA inventory. I started developing an Access database (strictly USA) years ago, maybe more appropriately decades ago, that I used for want lists. I had big designs for the database but it fell to the wayside as life intervened.
I did manage to locate Scott catalog data for stamps through Scott 3791 but only managed to get up to Scott 2558 loaded in the database. That data, however, did not include the Scott value for each stamp and for the stamps after 2558, the data was incomplete (only have the catalog number, face value and description). Will soon start the search for the rest of the data.
I have downloaded Stamp Manage to check it out, just have not yet. I will also check the other options mentioned in this thread. I like the 'free' options so they will be what I check out first.
