No news yet what will be the first commemorative issue ? May be the Coronation in May? And what generic image will be used to replace the young Queen head used for decades on all UK stamps since we have the privilege recognised by the UPU of not having. The country name on our stamps, (a tradition since GB was first country to have stamps …ours are always recognised by having the monarch head or portrait)

Say what you will about King Charles III. I think the new stamp, based on the image above, looks great and carries on the Machin tradition.

Well, at least the color is pretty.
Not sure if this will be considered a Machin though. Seems more like a stop gap. Going from the clean, orderly image from the QE Machin series, to this, is rather startling.

“Machins” were named after the designer Arnold Machin , now deceased. These were similar production based on the sculpted head for the new 50p coin just released. The artist being Martin Jennings , the generic title should be “Jennings” NOT new “Machins”
so,give artist credit where credit is due, we had the Wildings before the Machins, the Chalon heads were named for the artist, Anigoni gets credit for issues of Hong Kong and a host of other colonies , so these are “Jennings”

I used the term Machin "TRADITION". Perhaps I should have used the word "STYLE" instead. The original stamp was based on numerous photographs with different lighting of a bas-relief in clay that Arnold Machin carved, somewhat reminiscent of the Wedgewood style. Oh, I could have used "reminiscent" as well I suppose.

Sure Brad I know exactly what you mean and they will no doubt be referred to as “ Machins” or whatever, just me being pedantic and nit picking!

LOL - no problem Vikingeck. It was me being persnickety as well. I am not in disagreement with your point. Due to his age and likely length of reign, they may well be known simply as the Charles III Issue, much like the Edward VIII Issue. Of course, I am hoping Charles will be around a little longer than his great uncle Edward.

Say what you will about King Charles III. I think the new stamp, based on the image above, looks great and carries on the Machin tradition. At least it looks like King Charles. It seems quite accurate to me: not flattering, not a caricature, not some unrealistic ideal. I always wondered why Queen Elizabeth never got a day older. Was a would-be Dorian Gray thing going on? Even Queen Victoria, who wasn't devoid of vanity, aged gracefully on her stamps (and coins). However, I did read an article recently - I think it was the Atlantic Monthly - that one thing the Queen did perfectly was maintain as best she could the persona of the monarchy as a timeless institution. It made sense to me. So maybe the stasis of the Machins was connected to that. Unlike most Americans, I'm not a monarchist, but I respect the institution and I do wish the best for the new King. Too bad about those QR codes, though. I guess that's life in the modern age. Bah!

I like it. Perhaps the oversized image doesn't do the design justice. The real stamps, once issued could be quite attractive. But I agree about the label! Double bah!

I think the new King makes for a fine fellow on the new stamps!
I always wondered why the good Queen's stamps were called Machins. Now I know!
I like how they carried over the King's profile from the Queen's Machins profile.
Yes...I do like them.
But honestly, I hope I live long enough to see William and Kate take the throne. Mike

Hello cjd, I agree, why did you think he would be facing the other way? I'm not aware that this has been discussed yet but the topic interests me very much. Rob

On UK coins the direction faced alternates with each new monarch, but on UK stamps they have always faced left.

So I'm curious about two things with the new issue: 1. Like others I was fully expecting him to face right... so wondering what that's all about... not that there's a law against it or anything... 2. I wonder at what level the "simple profile design" was decided as well (i.e. no crown for example). Was this a King Charles, "okay ladies and gents, let's keep me simple... no crown" OR was it a higher level, "Your Majesty, for today's times and because of some people's views on the Monarchy, we recommend you keep it simple... no crown." I do like the new Jennings though (yup, I'm starting to call them that, anyway!). A good tribute to the Machins, methinks.

Hi Carmen, seegod1 1. wakeybluenose answered this above 'On UK coins the direction faced alternates with each new monarch, but on UK stamps they have always faced left.' 2. This portrait is the same as the one featured on our new 50p coins. I'm sure Charles wants to be seen a monarch of the people with less pomp and circumstance. With an already existing modern portrait it was expedient to use the Jennings image. Daniel

I just received the Buckingham Covers magazine/ brochure today and, clearly, the final Jennings stamps had not been revealed at the time of printing. This is how the cover looks in the magazine:
