This interesting postcard sent in 1924 from India to the UK sports a Mt. Everest Cinderella (a fundraiser label, perhaps) tied with a magenta cancel from an expedition. It reads "Mount Everest Expedition *1924* /Rongbuk/Glacier/Base/Camp" and ties the label nicely to the mailed postcard, which pictures the world's highest peak in a black & white photo. The card was signed rather illegibly by the team "captain" (not the "Gen. Hon(orable) C.G. Bruce" who is listed as "leader"). A KGV "ONE AND A HALF ANNA" definitive from 1921 is nicely struck with a "British Empire/Exhibition 1924" pictorial machine cancel, and there is a printed notation that a film of this great exploit will be shown in London at the Scala Theatre after November 1924. Almost a hundred years old; I like Cinderellas that are "tied" to the cover or postcard, even when the Cinderella uses what was, at the time, an ancient good luck symbol, as evident in the four corners of the label. Unfortunately, the swastika was used shortly afterwards by the Nazi regime, and will likely forever be closely identified with that horrible era. I believe the seller has it priced rather high, at US$45 and I am pondering whether it would be a worthy addition to my rather small "Cinderellas on Cover" collection. Asking myself, if it would be still priced at that level were it not adorned (some might say "sullied") with the hooked cross.....yet perhaps the the interesting cancel and signature of an expeditionary "leader" might justify the price. Any comments?

Noel, the expedition's photographer & filmmaker and the man responsible for a very large part of the expedition's financial backing, for which he received rights to the photos and films. A film entitled "The Epic of Everest" was produced and it has since been exhibited after its restoration. Here's the trailer for the film. Ryan

You can also read a book entitled " The Story of Everest" written by Capt. Noel about the expedition. Ryan

It's a beauty, Jim ( jimwentzell ), that's for sure. No idea if it's worth $45, though..... I suppose I would say, "Go with your gut."

Hi Jim ( jimwentzell).......the overall toning of the card would put me off paying such a sum. The label itself is badly toned on most perfs which takes away much of the beauty. The label in reasonable condition is a $5/$10 item on any given day but I would say this card is way overpriced. Just my opinion and as Chris stated, go with your gut feeling ! Londonbus1

Hi Jim , I have had two of these turn up in the past ….maybe 10- 15 years ago I believe I sold the better one for about £50 . They were prepared for the expedition and a few hundred were mailed from Calcutta as they returned. There are several on eBay ( in better condition than this one) at prices between $100 and $300 . How long they have been around and whether they will sell at those prices I have no idea.

jimwentzell , I don't think that these cards are actually signed. The message and signature look exactly the same on all examples of the card. The British Empire Exhibition slogan is nice though. But, it's tatty and heavily stained. Daniel

No the signatures are part of the photo. Remember the instigator of these cards was the expedition photographer. So not a handwritten signature it is photographic print.
