Another unknown open for discussion! This stamp is a Scott Type A13, $800 denomination, green with a 4 printed Chinese characters in a 2 x 2 format. Scott does list a #90 Type A13, $800 in orange. The stamp is imperf, unused NGAI(?) on a medium stiff wove paper. No similar stamp or postal stationary (cut square) item found in reference catalogs. Also the overprint doesn't seem to be on any other PRC stamps listed. Any help would be appreciated.

Interesting. I don't recall ever seeing this overprint before. The stamp appears to have been demonetized by the overprint -- either because it is the Western equivalent of printer's waste or it is a trial color stamp. That's just a guess. The 4 characters indicate use as/for postal asset waste. I leave the proper explanation to the others...

khj, thanks for the reply. Your comments re: trial color stamp is the only thought that I too had on the stamps usage. Also the characters you translated as postal asset waste and being imperf & paper thickness gives a lot more credibility to this point.

These characters read from left to right, top to bottom: 郵資作廢, which means void postage.
郵資 = postage rate; 作廢 = void (not cancelled, because cancelled means that it was in use)

Yes, basically the equivalent of a "not valid for postage" overprint/marking. As far as why, the trial color stamp was just my guess, given the exceptional wide margins and lack of listing for a green $800 stamp.
