Since I handle most of the uploading of new issues on Colnect, I thought this year I would start a new project tracking the cost of new issues for each country. - The cost will be based on one copy of each new stamp issued in 2024. - Issues that consist of both stamps and souvenir sheets with the same stamp will have the souvenir sheet included. - Countries that produce stamp issues in more than one format will only have the stamp issue counted once unless the stamps differ from each other in some technical detail, be it perforation, gum type, difference in design and so forth. Included in my analysis will be a per week cost in US$ to acquire the new issues for the year. For this first post since we are only one week into the year the totals will be the same, but this column value will change the further in time we go. So for now here is this week's new issue cost chart. I will try to update this each week, but this will depend on Real Life commitments as well, so there may be gaps between postings. Codes are : MS - Mini-Sheet SS - Souvenir Sheet PB - Prestige Booklet Here is the list for Week 1 2024. Since we only have 1 week in, the Cost Per Week is the same, that will change as we move forward.

Great idea. It's the same project "Linn's Stamp News" once took up and which I followed fairly closely to help me determine which countries to collect -- and not collect (which may have been more important). But I don't understand "cost per week" as an index. Cost per week is not a figure anyone uses, but "cost per year" is. It's what anyone collecting a country would want to know to determine whether buying year sets is a good idea or not. And you'd be in good company since "Linn's" used "cost per year". "Cost per week" just means I have to multiply by 52 weeks to get a meaningful figure, one I can actually use .You wouldn't do "cost per day," I assume. "Cost per week" is a bit odd, and it's not a meaningful figure. But I really like the fact that you're doing this.

"Cost per week" is a bit odd, and it's not a meaningful figure The cost of week is something I am tracking out of curiousity. One of the big complaints of collectors is that the yearly cost of new issues is too high. So I am doing a bit of a test here based on the idea that people will freely spend US$5 at some point during a week on something either fast food or coffee shop without a second thought. If one skipped the fast food/coffee and put that $5 aside for keeping their collected countries up to date, would that be enough to cover the cost (US$5x52 would mean US$260/year to buy new issues). So that is what I am tracking, to see what the cost per week for various countries would be and how that might compare with other things we buy during the week that are not essentials, but which most people don't think twice about spending money for.

Update for Week 2 2024 Codes are : BK - Booklet MS - Mini-Sheet SS - Souvenir Sheet PB - Prestige Booklet Great Britain is so high (almost US$90.00) due to the plethora of items related to the Spice Girls issue released on 11 January that the major catalogues will treat as separate items - 2 se-tenant strips of five, a souvenir sheet of five, two collector sheets of 10 sold above face value, and a presitge booklet.

I would be interesting to see a ratio of face value to population. Burnei has a population of 445,000 per google.

I would be interesting to see a ratio of face value to population. Burnei has a population of 445,000 per google. I am not very convinced of the additional usefulness of such a conversion of the cost of stamps (face value) of a country per inhabitant of that country. To a certain extent, this would imply that the stamps would or should be issued primarily for the postal service for the local population. However, this has long since ceased to be the reality: to a large extent, postal administrations are oriented towards the potential global market of stamp collectors, be they country collectors or topical collectors - and not just since yesterday. Most of us also collect newly issued stamps from countries of which we are not citizens...

I did some testing with the idea of face value vs population and it really looks odd and not sure what additional information it gives us in terms of what postal agencies are doing. Would anyone call the Vatican an "exploitative" postal administrtion - it only has a population of 825 people yet this year has issued stamps to face value equivalent of US$15.84, giving it currently the highest face value per capital total of US$0.0192, while France, currently the highest total cost with US$154.50, has a population of 67.75 million so a per capita of only US$0.0000022.
So I think including this information really will not be useful to deduce "excessive" production.
