Hi all, I recently got some pages from an old collection. There are 6 Meng Chiang stamps with wrong overprints - 50 cent on 8 cent, 10 cent on 8 cent, $1 on 8 cent, $1 on 40 cent, 50 cent on 20 cent, and 10 cent on 10 cent. Are these fakes? Errors? worth anything? Also had a Sinkiang with an overprint I cannot find. Thoughts? Thanks!

Don't know about the Sinkiang overprint.
But the surcharge characters on the Meng Chiang stamps are quite crude -- they look like they were made by someone who didn't know how to write Chinese and was trying to copy the "appearance", as the calligraphy lacks the proper "styles/serifs...". But I haven't checked for possible local surcharges, so I'm hesitant to call them outright fakes.

Agree, the top line appears genuine -- fairly common overprint.
Yes, the left column reads postage stamp. In the right column, the bottom character is gold. The top right character is smudged. It probably refers to the new currency, so the stamp has been revalued for the new currency. However, this overprint is really really crude. So either a provisional local issue (which I haven't researched), or a crude fake.

FOUND IT! Sinkiang stamp is a postal savings stamp - PS221 in the China Stamp Society Specialized catalog. I couldn't see the forest for the trees so I turned the stamp and book upside down and quickly matched the overprint... (note to self - don't stare at it too long!)
