Thanks Jack, Gee, don't know what happened there, all my images disappeared. All is OK now. We have had humid thundery weather here, maybe a wireless thing.
For the record, the math, (taking into consideration inaccurate small scan) Top Perf = 12.94 side perf =12.09

Hmmm 12.9 should not exist. I will have to recheck my measurement on the width

Hmmm 12.9 should not exist. I will have to recheck my measurement on the width Not needed Brian, the scan is the fly in the ointment. With the math, one has to "count the teeth" (The pointy bits) One lines up the left hand border of the design, and see where the nearest top tooth lies sometimes the border gives half a tooth, other times lies in the valley. A large 600dpi scan gives the most accurate reading, you can line up the teeth accurately. With Froggies scan, too much is left for guessing. Example If there were 10.1/2 teeth across the top design the perf would be 12.35 If there were 11 teeth across the perf would be 12.94 (a big difference, added to that Frogs perfs have cut off some of the design, but not much in my opinion) Cheers

At this point I trust my eyes a bit more than your math. Thanks for your efforts though.I believe even my weak attempt at showing the stamp lined up on a gauge should be considered. The sides are also not 12.25 but fit gauge at 12.5 not a positive but I'm sold.I'm going to put it sliding gauge to quadruple check.

The hole in your math theory is you must "judge" rather the design lines up with half a tooth, quarter of a valley or any where in between which allows for wide berth of error.Big difference between quarter and two thirds in a math equation. That is if I understand that it is what your using.

Oops sorry frog, I erred down instead of up. Your stamp is 12.7 x 12.2. I think it qualifies as 12-1/2 x 12-1/2. A higher resolution scan will easily determine it.

Done with this one and moving on.THANKS Brian.Still have to tackle the ones and twos as well. I was joking with my Mom and oldest sister just yesterday over the turkey dinner, about how Mom had taught us to read a perf. gauge well before jr. high. That makes like fifty years of looking at the dots.Time flies when you're having fun.

What a joy that must be, having a good old chin wag about stamps over family dinner. If I bring up stamps someone says pass the gravy before I have a chance to finish what I was saying.

Jack you're right about that, another blessing in my life.A family of collectors is probably not a common thing. The unfortunate thing is it's only two generations as of now.Maybe one of our kids will get the bug soon?? Has anyone else here had a parent as a philatelist ?? I try to educate my youngest whats what and how to spot things of interest but do so with caution.I don't want to scare her off it can be overwhelming this little hobby.

Once you plant the stamp collecting seed, that's all it might take. Many collectors return to collecting in their 40's, 50's.

Well, this tread contains lots of useful information on the 3c (37 /41). Since perf represent the measurement of the number of "holes" over a 20 mm distance, I am thinking all we need is a 20 mm transparent ruler to superimpose over a scan. The real question is how to do that using standard scanning tools/software? Any advice woud be welcome, as I have over 300 of those orange stamps to sort out....

Here is an interesting one I recently acquire. It is 66 x 64, I can see no guide dots, and the top margin part inscription shows a H. Could this be a late Montreal printing, # 41a ? (12 x 12 1/4)? Here's a link to the photo. (not sure this is the correct way to post picture...lets try it....)

gillesletimbre, I took the liberty of correcting your image upload. You want to copy/paste the "IMG" link from PB into your post. Please remember that once you upload an image, you can't delete it from or move it within your PB account or it will disappear from your forum post.

Admittedly this is an area of my Canadian collection I've only tickled. I really need to go back in and sort them properly and redo some album pages. But as an aside, I'd suggest checking out the November 2014 issue of Gibbons Stamp Monthly magazine. There was a terrific article about the small queens, outlining the history of the issue, and some of the varieties.

Gilles, with my calipers tool I calculate your stamp as K65 (horizontal) x K64 (Vertical). Horizontal: 0.642in / 10 holes x 1000 = K64.2 (round down to K64) Horizontal: 1.3in / 20 holes x 1000 = K65

I first heard of "Screen Caliper" from a member on another forum (SCF). The basic version is free and you can access it here.: www.iconico.com/caliper/I am quite impressed with this digital tool. One great advantage is it allows you to calibrate the tool based on a known size of the stamp. This is important, as most scanners on the market do not actually scan 100%, and the actual size can vary in different locations on your flatbed!

Thanks very much for sharing this!!
(You don't happen to have a recommendation for a virtual perforation gauge, do you?)

I made a virtual perforation gauge a while back, which could be inserted into a scanned stamp, but it did not work that great because I found it inaccurate due to what I mentioned before, scans are never 100%.
Maybe others have suggestions?
I personally find the easiest way to get accurate perforations, especially for the small queens, is measuring and "doing the math".
