A lot of my Postmarks are going to be Khartoum, naturally, the capital city. But I think my 10 Piastre Camel Postman sports a "Wadi Halfa" postmark, (on the shores of Lake Nubia.) Steamers once plied the river. Here is some fascinating info on the TPOs (Travelling Post Offices): Shellal / Halfa TPOs

Echoes of Sudanese history, reverberate down the years, to the tiny little country town, in which I live.
My place became a town, in 1898 when Kitchener fought in the Sudan in 1898 at the Battle of Omdurman. (1898) We have an Omdurman Street (The largest city in the Sudan) We have a Khedive Street (Lord or Viceroy in Sudanese)
Winston Churchill was there, 24 years old, a lieutenant journalist in the 21st Lancers.

I notice that the Scott Catalog (at least the 2014 edition I have) does not describe official Sudan stamps perforated with SG. Anyone know why?

What happened to reduce the price of the 1931-35 Perf. 14 Sudan Airmails? My dad ran the Tanglewood Stamp Service (Tacoma, Washington USA) out of a room in our home until his death in 1957. I am now going through about 150 approval booklets filled with stamps that my mom put into storage in 1957. For each booklet, I am tallying the stamps and listing the countries represented and the stamp my dad priced highest. I was curious how his prices compared to current catalogue listings. In almost all cases, as you might expect, the current listing is much higher than my dad's asking price. One exception really had me wondering whether my dad was the honest businessman that I, as an adult, hoped he was. I knew him only as young child and no one, to my knowledge, spoke ill of him or his stamp business. The exception was finding some booklets containing Sudan Airmail stamps in the 1931-35 series as in the image below. My dad's prices were much higher, especially considering they were in 1957 dollars, than the current catalog listings. My relief came when I looked up listings in the 1957 Scott catalog that my mom boxed up with the stamps (all listings for used): Stamp 1957 listing current online (2023?) listing C4 3.50 7.25 C5 1.25 0.25 C6 2.00 0.25 C7 0.50 0.25 C8 0.60 0.25 C9 1.75 0.25 C10 1.25 0.25 C11 2.00 0.90 C12 8.50 16.50 C13 2.25 0.35 C14 3.00 6.00 C15 2.50 2.00 So why the dramatic drop in listing for most of this series? The annotation on the sheet regarding perf. and Scott number are mine. In most cases, my dad did not include the stamp catalog number. The booklets contained only the stamps and their prices. So at least for these three Sudan Airmails (C10, C11, and C13) my dad's price was 50% of the value listed in the Scott catalog, which to me seems reasonable for a mail-order business in 1957.

Question about this Airmail stamp C17 - The Scott catalog has C17b listed as: "Arabic letters omitted". The other stamps in the set are shown below but this 15M on 10 looks different. Would you say this is the variety C17b or is this the normal overprint.

these four appear to be the only ones ovptd./surcharged from the 1935 AIR set - would appear that SG make no mention of 'Arabic Letters Omitted' - however, it appears that your 15 on 10 has picked up an ovpt. from the July 1938 issues - which didn't include a 15 on 10 stamp - and your ovpt. is bona fide in that translated it reads the normal way of ovpting the word 'Malime'. So the answer is your stamp isn't a missing Arabic ovpt stamp, but it's an abberation insofar as this ovpt. shouldn't appear on the black and carmine 10 m. stamp from 1935. Nice stamps by the way:-)

The Yvert & Tellier catalog only lists varieties with the middle arabic character (which looks like a comma) missing (not the whole arabic mention), and those are for the 2-1/2 piastres on 3 millièmes and 5 millièmes issues only.
