rod, Here's one that I don't think is on your page. This one was only used for 2 days - Aug 10-11, 1897 - Toronto Type 7 "C" flag. There is also a "G" and "H" die.

Jim, thank you for those freebies, they filled a few gaps. I am having trouble with the two P12 horizontal coils, I think they are imposters. I think they have been cut by scissors, possibly from a booklet pane stamp. Do coils have a specified width of coil paper, to check for fakes? (eg to pick up a wide margin stamp that has been cut) Thanks.

Just the flyspecker in me but that one has ink in the upper left margin Rod. ...you have it bad! The original 106b I posted in the page scan, differed from this one drastically, I think that one was a chemically altered stamp. This one was really, in your face, pink. Found it in my junk stamps.

Here's the #2 on your Flag Cancel list. The complete covers are quite scarce and this one is quite well-known.

You're right Rod I'm a bit over the top "specking",but remember I spent the better part of a full year looking at the admirals every day. CJD has the problem now, and don't worry I'll be sending him more. Crazy loves company.

Happy to oblige, Rod. Just happen to have my Holmes Specialized handy here next to the scanner. Would you like the following page of 'slogan foreunners' as well?

For interests sake, the #7 flag cancel shown on the above page was produced on the Bickerdike machine, introduced around 1897. This cancel, in the David Sessions book 'The Early Rapid Cancelling Machines of Canada' is numbered F7, both with and without the die letters. Jimjung's 1896 flag cancel on the small queen was produced by an Imperial Rapid Cancelling Machine (Session #F2, called a 'straight jack'), the machine that the Bickerdike replaced.
And let's clarify further. On the flag page above (which was scanned from the Holmes' Specialized Philatelic Catalogue) flag cancels 1 - 4a are Imperial cancels, whereas 5 - 11 are Bickerdikes.
Interestingly (I think) both the Holmes and Sessions books appear to use the same illustrations of these flag cancels, which were attributed to Ted Kilish in Sessions, but I see no credit in the Holmes catalogue.

Here's the #2 on your Flag Cancel list. The complete covers are quite scarce and this one is quite well-known. The "Reliance" etiquette ? Are we aware of what that is? You may have uncovered a rare Canadian Cinderella. Reliance delivery Company See "The Field Guide to Cinderella Stamps of Canada" Catalogue cc5660 Page 159 (Edition 1) This item not listed It was not known from which city it operated, looks like Montreal. cindycan2

The envelope corner card reads Reliance Cigar Factory. To me the etiquette looks like something from a cigar box or even a cigar band. edit- Not exact, but the top end of this Reliance Cigar box is quite similar. [BROKEN IMAGE LINK(S) REMOVED]

I am having trouble with the two P12 horizontal coils, I think they are imposters. Same as #7 except for the letter "C" at the bottom left of the flag for the Toronto. There also come with the letter "G" and "H". All scarce/rare. The perf 12 Admiral Coils are known to be forged, especially the 2c with the high catalog value. Not really an expert on this issue but I have seen collectors use the shade to determine if real or not. The coils are also wet printings. There is a tiny plate flaw on the 2c p12 coil that is not on the stamp. This is to the left of the top leaf on the left side of the stamp.

Coils. These are supposed to be Perf 12 horiz. I think they are normal postage stamps, that have been tampered with. The left cut by scissors from booklet pane, the other dodgy. Do Canadian Coils (horizontal perf) have a common width from the cutting machine? or, do we just collect them in pairs? (Condition irrelevent) Thanks

Rod, one way I use is to look at the edges under the loupe. If it shows ragged you can be sure it's a wanna be.The printings were usually either wet or dry so comparing a known example of either printing will also give an answer.I've not checked catalog but sure it will say wet or dry there. My age is showing I'm pretty sure they were wet printed. It will not be the width of the stamp rather the height of the design.Let us know what you missing together I'm sure we can fill in some holes.

Thanks for confirming that Froggie. My in-basket, is overflowing, have not opened your freebies gift as yet, probably not for 2 weeks I work on whatever comes in, in turn. Crikey! there are a lot of stamps in the world.......

For the two 1c Admiral coils, I think the one on the left is a normal stamp but the one on the right looks like a coil. The 1c does come in Blue Green shade.

Detail Scott 85 Scott 261 Fabulous example of the engraver's art. I count 28 people on this tiny stamp. Nowhere can I find any details of the designer or engraver/s. "Munitions factory" See "hidden date" above 5 of 50. ...and the "Dinky Toy" a lot of British kids would hope to be in the Christmas stocking The 25 pounder field gun.
