That is one very interesting site!
I really like their filters. For a collector of engraved stamps it is magic; you can filter any Country's issues for printing type!

Plus, the more backlinks a site has, the higher it rises in the google listings. SCF probably knows this; I wonder why they don't care.

Every time I do a search on Google, SCF always comes up at least #2. That could be because Google uses 'personalized search' settings: It remembers what sites you've been visiting before (those are given preference) It remembers what have you searched before (those themes/topics are given preference) It knows where you live / are (sites operating in the area/country are given preference) It tries to provide search result that please you. Not necessarily the best ones! ... For example those living in Australia will see a whole lot more of StampBoards in their Google Search results than those in US (based on geolocation preference alone). I going to spend a little time later checking it out. Thanks And while on topic of Colnect.... In defence of SCF admin I have to say that I'm not putting Colnect high on my 'favorites list' either. I don't know the reasons why SCF prohibits Colnect, but my personal 'negative' opinion is mostly because of 'stuff' that's happened in the way back in the past. And there's a bit of personal chemistries clash too between us website owners. IMHO it's just a 'personal response', not much different from folks walking out from SCF (or BidStart/VSC; Or StampBoards, Or ...) It's very hard for 'community admin'/website owner to walk out of their own community/website; whereas members can always flee to another community/website, or start their own (and I'm not criticizing anyone here; just stating a fact) . But I agree that in communities people using & creating the community, and especially the content should matter more than their leaders, which is why I do have some links to Colnect on my blog (though every time I think of it I get shivers   ) Just my 5 cents worth. -k-

Do YOU have an online site listing your trading stock or your wantlists? If yes, how about sharing your experience here so that we can compare notes. I've been super busy photographing and uploading stuff to trade. Holy Smokes! I had no idea how much time this takes. It has given me a great deal of admiration for those folks who have a bazillion stamps scanned in on their Bidstart, Hipstamp, Ebay store etc. I didn't want to be locked in to using someone else's format, so I used a Proboards forum like this. I started building it a few weeks ago and it is going quite well. I like how the proboards layout gives me the option to organize and move things very easily. So, if you are comfortable here, starting a site for yourself would be easy peasy. My page is HERE - still in the infant stages. If you take a peek, let me know if you have any suggestions. Yeah, I know a few pics are crooked or a squeak fuzzy. I'm using my iPad for quick snaps - a thousand times faster than a scanner. The big sites for uploading your wantlists and trades like colnect are excellent, but I think they are inflexible. The nice part is the pics are already there. But for lots and covers that doesn't work, does it? Anyways, I prefer something I can customize. I used to admin a game forum on proboards so I knew the basics. What other options are there? Any recommendations?

Way! LoL!  No way? Meaning you don't have an online site or you wouldn't want it posted? Or you don't do wantlists? Or you wouldn't want to do all that? Or something else? Or you never trade? angore ? You've got me curious now! There are a million ways to "do" this hobby, but no "right" way. True? |

I am a bit of a dinosaur and do not have my own website. however I have several accounts on eBay where I have about 100 surplus items listed at any onetime. If they don’t sell right away I just relist. I also use Delcampe for European stuff though I have had considerably less sales success there. I have never found any use for Colnect , and Hipstamps has been pretty useless for me
I have been a collector for most of my rather long life and don’t have a wants list as such . My one country collections have moved on and only Samoa remains, where my wants are now governed by my budget.
I have got to the stage with my Social philately on Tobacco’ and my interest in “How War has impacted on the Mail”, where wants lists are no use , I rely on “ i’ll Know it when I see it” and trawl the web

I almost posted a similar question yesterday, but was curious who uses Colnect to keep track of their collection. If I was still trading like I once did it would be extremely useful, rather than having to keep track of multiple lists and emailing them out.
I've been adding stamps to this site every day now, and have recently purchased Stamp Mates; this program allows me to import my collection from Colnect and then add additional information. I'm liking it so far!

Very interesting to hear various opinions on Colnect etc. I would not have time to keep another inventory on a separate site even though am sure it is useful for exchangers. I have an account on Colnect and just a friend from Norway so I know how the site looks. My inventory is done on software bought 3 years ago and updated yearly for numbers, Countries and valuation. It has a "want list" etc. but I do not have time to put the "dups" for exchange. I rely on my quick stats reports to print what I have in each Country (360) and have use it once with one of our members to try to get some German stamps but he never replied, cause a lot of folks do not keep tabs (Scott. Maury etc) numbers, just scans....not precise enough for me. Each of my 35,000 stamps (inventoried), blocks, covers etc. are inventoried and I know where they are (Album, special Albums, Custom Albums and Cover as well as PBs albums.I have another 20,000 not inventoried - this takes time  I have downsized a bit this Summer, about 10 small Countries (lots) and will do more when I have time. I also transferred some to another member who does not have the Country I wish to eliminate. I am not a seller.....buy very occasionally, mostly CANADA and Provinces and nice covers. |

I've been using Colnect mainly for cataloging my stamps - they have nearly everything, but there have been times when I've submitted additions that they've missed. Overall I've been pretty impressed with their responsiveness - having mods for specific countries that will update the stamp information if you have provable information (like owning it, or the catalog data). I also like that they share the IDs for stamps from multiple catalogue series. Because of this, they are usually pretty good at listing all the variants of any given stamp.
I have been using both the swap list and wish list, but to be honest it's for myself and not really for actual swapping - I just like to know what I have.

No, not from this end philatelia, call me "old-school" but a spreadsheet with individual tabs for either a specific country or issue works well enough for me. Checklists and/or wantlists are maintained similarly and can easily be printed and taken with me to a show or bourse. I do not have thousands of stamps, so this simple system works... |

Yes I use colnect both for inventory my own collection and for swapping. This weekend I picked 450 stamps for a swap with a collector from Germany. He had marked the stamps he wanted from me on the site, that created a list that I could follow and pick from my stock books. I knew what condition he wanted and as a service I scanned the stamps (put them on A4 stock cards that I have) for him to check before sending. The same the other way. I create a list on colnect from his swap list. Then we agree on the terms (1:1 or by catalogue value).
I have at the moment 36606 stamps inventoried at colnect, Ca 17113 on my swap list and 7984 on my want list.
Colnect also have this cool function to search by image for a stamp. Just put a good scan of the stamp in question and let colnect search. I would say that it find the stamp in 80 to 90 % .
I would recomend to give it a try with an open mind.
Yes it is time consuming but hey, that is doing this on a spreadsheet to. Here you don't have to write at all. Just tick a box, select a number if you want (how many in stoc) to and select condition (used, MNH, MH or CTO) if you want to.

I like the idea behind colnect and other sites where I can inventory and sell/swap my stamps and I even have an inventory of items on colnect already but I don't spend a lot of time adding to it or attempting to sell or swap. I get discouraged because I feel like there are so many of the same stamps out there already that nobody would be interested in buying or swapping from me so why bother. This is not just on colnect...I have tried a number of other sites as well and I feel the same way. I feel like I would have to have 1000s of stamps uploaded before anybody would have any interest and even then, there is no guarantee. It all seems too time consuming and for little return on time invested.
Perhaps one of you can motivate me to try again.

There is not much selling on Colnect I think, but I have a feeling that this will be more of. But trading/swapping is good. If you want to swap and not only 1:1 but by want list, you need to tell what you can swap. If you list 100 stamps, and think you will meet sombody would need all 100, then I started 1 and a half year ago and realy put some effort into listing what I needed and what I could offer. The swap proposal increased so much that I had to say stop to all swaping for a long time. Some adwise: - You must get organiced at your stamp collection.
- Know where you stamps are and how manny you have.
- Tell in your profile what your terms are.
- Don't have to manny swap's going on at the same time.
- Check the profile on the collectors that want to swap with you.
- I swap minimum 25 stamps. Postage is expencive (in Norway)
- Don't say yes to swap manny hundreds stamp at a time (like I just did) It take a lot of time. But if you like it, and trust the other collector, it's a great way to get a lot of stamps.
- Don't bother by listing the most ordinary stamps, everybody have them already.
- Have fun and ger rid of your duplicates.

I've been using colnect just to import country stamp lists into StampMate, and then use that for my main inventory. That works great, and having both Scott & Yvert #s is a big help in collecting the French colonies. But I am woefully "under-inventoried" - I know how many of each country I have, but have only inventoried actual stamps in StampMate or Excel to the extent of 8500 of the 86000+ I have.

Wow, I use the "Open Book To See What I Have" method. The only spreadsheet I have for any collection is for my Ohio Revenues. That is just an Excel Spreadsheet because they are too hard to just look at to know what I have. The rest, US & Germany stamps, I have no idea what I have, that's why I open the book and see. LOL.

Ok, created the Colnect account and spent some time seeing what the site was all about and its capabilities...
I liked the multi-language support and the fact that I could pay sellers via bank transfer, but found that creating things such a wish list, finding items for sale, trade, etc. difficult and not intuitive. For even the simplest things, I would have to consult the on-line help and given that my current system works, does not cost me 10 euros a month, I am going to stick with the "tried and true" of my spreadsheets and paper checklists; I might even go so far as to give the "Open Book To See What I Have" method a try ;-)
Glad to hear it works for others though...

Today I received a bunch of Belgian stamps from a exchange collector in Belgium. All the stamps from my wish list at Colnect. Now I just have to tick the "have in collection" button and place them in my album. Thank you Colnect.  |

Yep, 227 new stamps from Belgium. That bring me up in 1714 different Belgium stamps (1849-1970) Still missing 714 stamps!
