Here are a couple of old revenue stamps from New Zealand that I came across recently. The stamp duty issue was released in 1878 (my copy shows an 1882 cancellation) and can be found in both lilac and blue - the blue stamp is much more common, or at least it's worth less. Usage as a revenue stamp wouldn't make it worth very much, only 75p in my Barefoot. But they were also used postally (Campbell Paterson and other New Zealand catalogues list them as "postal fiscals", although Scott doesn't). If this is in fact a postal cancel, then it has some value - my Campbell Paterson says NZ $60, my Auckland City Stamps says NZ $100, although the centring on my stamp is too poor to match those values. As I was sorting through a large group of New Zealand on-paper I came across the same stamp duty issue you reference above, released in 1878. It is a group of 3 stamps, barely hanging on to each other at this point but I will try to keep it together when I mount it. I see just a hint of a light purple stain so I am guessing it has a revenue cancellation...all the same, I thought it was interesting and I am happy to have it.

In the same group of kiloware, this item had me a little more excited. In Scott, the George V in Admiral's Uniform, 2sh blue is listed used at a catalog value of US $36.00. I know, however, the heavy postmark and blue ink (?) stain on the back will likely detract from it's value...not to mention there is an area of perfs that seem to be short/cut at the upper left in the scan of the reverse of the stamp as well as other faults. Regardless, my question is whether this is Scott 182 blue or Scott 182a dark blue? I have nothing to compare it to. 182a is listed at $87.50 in used condition.

My Stanley Gibbons concise lists:- 466 issued 12 July 1926 was printed by 'Jones' on chalk surfaced paper with white gum 466wi as above watermark inverted 469 issued May 1927 was printed by 'Cowan' on thick opaque chalk surfaced paper with white gum
Yours looks like the Cowan opaque paper.
Hope that helps

The difference between a 466 (Sc 182a left) & 469(Sc 182 right) is very noticeable when you see both together. Not only the color but also the finer details in the 469
2017 SG listing - based on condition you can appreciate that your sample would be greatly discounted. Realistically a used 466 with no major faults would sell for $30-$35

Thank you @falshung , this is what I was looking for. Scott, unfortunately, just has a note about 182a being dark blue but gives no information about it being a later printing or gives any point of comparison other than it being dark blue. My initial excitement was seeing it in the mix and on paper but once I soaked it, I was dismayed at the number of faults it had. That said, it will still fill an empty space on my album pages and I paid tenths of a cent for it. I really have no interest in selling it but it is interesting to know what the value might have been in any case.

As an avid NZ collector, I thought I would bump up this thread by showing some of my Chalons. I have a Campbell Paterson specialized catalogue. If anyone has any questions that can't be answered with SG or Scott, I'd be happy to have a look at CP for you.

I collect New Zealand issues from the King George VI era. Unfortunately, there were some earlier issues with a different watermark, so I ended up collecting them as well. I am referring to the pictorial series from 1935 to 1936 with watermarked NZ Star (shown on the left), and the series from 1936 to 1942 watermarked multiple NZ Star (shown on the right). In addition to the watermarks, you also have a number of perforations to consider as you sort your stamps. So it can be a really interesting set of stamps. Shown below is the first of several pages on my website showing the 1935 set lower values. Notice the various perforation options and the two dies that were used for the 1d value. To see the rest of this and other King George VI New Zealand issues, visit my website.

Thanks Rene for the compliment but I don't think I qualify for the"specialist" title! I have more of them but it's a complicated field of study and many of the stamps are becoming very expensive. I have a couple of Chalon covers which I acquired a long time ago and may post here soon, but it's very difficult trying to get more of them. I'd be interested to see any that other members may have.

With the arrival today of the 2/ stamp, I've managed to assemble a complete mint set of the first side-face series of 1873-1874. There are, of course, many varieties; but I think I will be happy with what I have been able to find.

New Zealand Cinderella 1906 International Exhibition Here is a (bad) image of the entire set of 7. Number 6 in the set is the one to find! If anyone wants to see a better image loaded then please ask (I just found a stock image from the web for illustrative purposes) Here is the actual 1906 Christchurch Exhibtion set (4v) with Exhibition cancels: and as Rod mentioned earlier there is a bit of a story behind the 1d Claret (var.) A couple more of the beautiful Chalon Head stamps of Queen Victoria. This time from New Zealand. Unchecked for anything except beauty thus far !! Nice one LondonBus1 Perhaps load them into the New Zealand Chalons thread too. These look like Davies prints (wmk. Large Star) 2d Blue SG39 (very worn) & 6d Red-brown SG43 Dave NB Please check that these are Large Star watermarked as they could possibly be NZ watermarked and those are worth more (particularly the 6d Brown NZ wmk. SG99 worth $$$)

From the sublime (Chalon Heads) to the ridiculous. I did consider introducing a topical category: Toilets on Stamps but thought better of it. However, this is a legitimate example of New Zealand Post's DIY stamps. Using a blank New Zealand Post $1.50 stamp and affixing a sticker to it, subject to approval. In fact this design dates back to 2006, this is a 2013 use of the sticker depicting the toilet designed by Hundertwasser in Kawakawa. Hundertwasser was a renowned Austrian architect and designer. Born Friederich Stowasser in 1928, he later used the name Hundertwasser, a loose Germanic version of Stowasser. He moved to New Zealand in the 1970s and settled in Kawakawa in 1975 where this toilet can be found. He famously died in 2000 on the ship Queen Elizabeth 2. This was mixed in with some GB stamps. I didn't find elsewhere, so here it is. I know nothing about New Zealnd stamps- not on my radar! but it seems like a nice stamp- The uploaded image is a bit more brown than the brick red/orange the etamp actually is.... must be the totems- I've never noticed this before. I have the saved image on my computer up on same screen and they are different in color.... odd

Hi Stanley
I am not an expert on these 1935 Pictorials either - but it rings a bell that there is a shade variation in this group.
This weekend I shall take a look at my CP catalog and confirm for you.
PS - these stamps can be prone to oxidation as well so we need to have that in consideration too.

Here is the relevant page from my old CP. These are all of the listed variations with the 2d Whare ( far - ri ..... meaning 'house') As can be seen, there are 2 wmk types and several perforation varieties listed. The colors are mainly orange (shades) but also a Brown-orange in the March 1936, wmk.8 printing. I hope this helps Dave

Scott's lists four 2d varieties, and there are seven in my new acquisition (SG NZ 6th ed.) which lists 7.
I'll stick with two...

Here are a few I picked out of my books for shade interest. I don't specialize in these stamps so haven't sorted them at all but place here for interests sake (and to add another image of these stamps we are discussing) : Dave
