That is very interesting neilmac and rod222I wasn't aware of other pigeon message services being operated at that time. I presume these other services (other than the 2 for Gt Barrier) didn't issue stamps or labels for their services? I have never seen or heard anything about them if they did! Very interesting. Thanks for sharing Dave

New Zealand Registration Labels 1. Seeking any information on "State Advances Corp" and whether this may be a new discovery ? I date it between 1903 and 1909 The Government Advances to Settlers Office was set up in 1903 for the purpose of issuing cheap loans to small farmers, settlers and workers Not listed (with cursory page turnings) in Voyce or Campbell 2. What would the acronym "MOW" indicate, please ...Money Order W ...? 3. I do not see any reference to any Registered Mail opportunity in the Chathams I looked under, WAITANGI, OWENGA, PITT ISLAND, and CHATHAM

What would the acronym "MOW" indicate, please ...Money Order W ...? When I was a lad, MoW stood for Ministry of Works (Public Works that is). But as a usage on a Registration Label, perhaps it stands for Money Order Wanganui (current day Whanganui). Dave

Sounds like NZ post were anti-competitive even back then. Not much has changed it seems. What they are doing to the rural delivery guys now is nothing short of atrocious.

Taita Post Office workshops. Looks like a Toyota Tiara in the distance I owned one, at one time, the most basic of cars, No matter how much I neglected it, it just kept on going, and going. My mates called it "The shopping Trolley"

I have discovered New Zealand's second most valuable stamp Sc# 113 1903 "Four Penny Lake Taupo Invert" (A second copy) (78 Inverts remain undiscovered) New Zealand South Arabia Qu'aiti State in Hadhramaut Stampex 1967 I'd suggest this may be a design of the enigmatic "Bruce Conde" Bruce Alfonso de Bourbon, Prince of Condé, Alfonso Yorba, and Hajji Abdurrahman.

To all the old "Tars" out there. New Zealand Maritime history, captured in very skilful song writing, by "Split Enz" (A Classic) "Six Months In A Leaky Boat" When I was a young boy I wanted to sail around the world That's the life for me Living on the sea Spirit of a sailor Circumnavigates the globe The lust of a pioneer Will acknowledge no frontier I remember you by Thunderclap in the sky Lightning flash, tempers flare 'Round the horn if you dare I just spent six months in a leaky boat Lucky just to keep afloat Aotearoa..........(New Zealand) Rugged individual Glisten like a pearl At the bottom of the world The tyranny of distance Didn't stop the cavalier So why should it stop me I'll conquer and stay free Ah, come on all you lads Let's forget and forgive There's a world to explore Tales to tell back on shore I just spent six months in a leaky boat Six months in a leaky boat Shipwrecked love can be cruel Don't be fooled by her kind There's a wind in my sails Will protect and prevail I just spent six months in a leaky boat Nothing to it leaky boat Sc# 980> 1990

New Zealand 3d Type F "The London Philatelist, 1919" Broken / worn perforating pins and other stuff. Any bright bookworm, to suggest what the icon is, for the leading "F" ? Hygeia ? or, is she looking through a telescope, insinuating "study"?

Thanks Jaysee (did not see this post, when I answered RK's suggestion, sorry) Yes, I think he was part of the family of Dandeson Coates (and adopted CROWTHER) born 1844 Son of the elder Dandeson Coates to whom, the mail was forwarded Sort of hit a muse, as my great great grandfather, was involved in the anti slavery patrols, down the west coast of Africa. New Zealand Wins Gold 2008 A Dunedin stamp collector has won gold at a world exhibition in Prague. Greg Francis (68), of Waverley, was one of five New Zealanders invited to submit collections to the Praga 2008 World Philatelic Exhibition and he was the only one to collect a gold medal. www.odt.co.nz/news/dunedin/rare-stamps-win-collector-world-gold

Posting this curiosity - 57 cancelled NZ KGVI 8d Officials in a single block. This is a largest cancelled block I have, and I've not seen any larger ( a challenge ... ). Unclear what this was for. It is gummed, so there are three working theories: 1) It was cancelled CTO for a collector 2) It was for a parcel (unlikely) 3) It was cancelled in advance for use in a government office or military base, but was not used. We'll likely never know. But I do like unusual items like this. RK

I don't have a bigger piece Klem.
I once had a commercially used block of 24 'Penny Universals' once. Sold it with about 10000 other Universals in a 64 page stockbook about 10 years ago. I wish I had kept it now :-)

Dunedin to Lancashire, England for 10d (Ten Pence) Note: "Bolton le Moors" is an Church of England ecclesiastical Parish boundary. By Bolton Evening News Reporter ONE of the most valuable envelopes ever sent to Bolton is expected to fetch up to £3,500 when it is auctioned next month. The pale blue envelope was sent from Dunedin, New Zealand, in 1870 at a cost of 10 old pennies. It was addressed to Mrs W.M.French, Rose Hill, Bolton-le-Moors, and is valuable because the Franco-Prussian war in Europe prevented the letter from being carried on its normal route. It could not go through France, so it was diverted via the Italian port of Brindisi and came to Bolton via Italy, Germany and Belgium. On its way, the envelope was stamped: "Insufficiently paid for Brindisi route, deficient postage, 3d." It is this hand-stamped message which makes the envelope "very rare" and valuable, according to auctioneers Spink, which is putting the envelope under the hammer on October 3. Only one other envelope posted from New Zealand is known to feature this "insufficiently paid" notice, probably applied by a post office clerk with a metal stamp at Alexandria, Egypt. Without this, the envelope would be worth only a fraction of its current value, probably between £500 and £600. But this was of no consolation to Mrs French, of Bolton. For it meant that through no fault of her own - and because of the war raging in Europe which started on July 15, 1870 a - she had to pay a threepenny surcharge when the envelope eventually reached her in Bolton. The envelope took 10 weeks to make the 11,500-mile trip from New Zealand to Lancashire: by ship from New Zealand to Alexandria, Egypt, across the Mediterranean to Brindisi, by rail through Europe, across the English Channel to one of the Kent ports, and then by rail to Bolton. It left New Zealand in July, 1870, reached Bolton Post Office on Boxing Day that year and was delivered to Mrs French the following day, December 27. It is not known who sent the envelope because the letter inside it is missing. Another Cover to Mrs French

Hey Rod
Those 2x Chalon covers are very nice. Perhaps put a copy of that post into the Chalon thread as well. I think they would be appreciated there very much :-)
All the best
