If you do not appreciate this stamp (XMAS MAP STAMP 1898- CANADA) well, I have to inform you that our member/friend stanley64 has outdone himself in an article written for the Study Group of BNAPS (British North American Philatelic Society), Vol 1, Number 2 (July 2021) "Featured Maps" showing us a nice cover with interesting plate varieties (red plate) and the details are in the presentation
A copy of mine of a Map stamp.....imagine the varieties !!! (this is not the stam he presented on cover )
Thanks Vince for the nice work -

There are lots of varieties out there that are known and not known..Keep your eyes open. The first one is my only known TRIPLE rope on my Scott 85. Others here are some of my other varieties.
Go to Ralph's re-entry.com web site. Also got to BNAPS regional study group "Map Stamps"

Thanks Robert WERT for your posts on the Map Stamp. Wouldn't it be nice if all these varieties appear in our Canada Unitrade Spec Catalogue ? ....not only in small text in one paragraph, but with numbers and pics and arrows. They could do a better documentation ! There are many...maybe they do not know where to start René

What I collect: I collect world wide up to 1965 with several specialty albums added due to volume of material I have acquired. At this point I am focused on Canada and British America. I am always on the lookout for stamps and covers with postmarks from communities in Queens County, Nova Scotia. I do list various goods including stamps occasionally on eBay as hdm50

With Christmas upon us I thought I would share my 4 examples of the first Christmas stamp. 3 are mint never hinged and one may be mint without glue but I consider it used. I continue to look for one on a cover or card from my home county of Queens County, Nova Scotia.

Post made by former member @sheihobI received a Lighthouse 20-40x zoom microscope with LED lighting for Christmas and have put it to good use already! Was looking through my copies of #85 the Map Stamp of 1898 and have found a nice example of an engraver's slip on a retouch attempt. There is a pretty strong horizontal line running through most of the bottom cable/border pattern. The most obvious slip appears under 'EMPIRE' as there is a diagonal line running towards the centre of the cable off of the intended frame line. None of my other copies have the strong horizontal line, let alone the nice slip under EMPIRE. The stamp: The slip, particularly clear under EMPIRE. I have a couple of these as well. I particularly like this image.

Indeed a great image @sheihob ... The stamps were produced using three different printings including one for the oceans and seas. The original order was for 20 million stamps, half with the oceans in blue and the other half with the oceans in green. There are many various shades noted which likely arises from the different batches of inks used and printer variation.
Happy collecting!

The latest addition in my efforts to plate all 100 positions from Plate 2, Canada's 1898 Imperial Penny Postage, Plate 2A Position 77
The stamp design, with its map of the world, is based on the Mercator Projection (1569) where Gerardus Mercator's brilliance was to translate the three-dimensional spheroid that is Earth onto a two-dimensional piece of paper. For those interested and some lunch time reading, later this month, Christie's will auction one of the original atlas' - Gerardus Mercator: the cobbler’s son who turned cartography from an art into a science
Have fun and happy collecting!

No time like the now to re-visit Canada's Imperial Penny Postage,
Canada's 1898 Imperial Penny Postage, Plate 5B Position 85 : States I & II.
In his text, Mr. Kenneth A. Kershaw, "The Canadian 1898 Christmas Map Stamp, A Definitive Plating Study" documents that Plate 5 was re-entered post commercial production resulting in different states for several positions in the sheet of 100 stamps. From the above pair, the supposition is that these represent the two different states of Position 85.
Plate 5B Position 85 : States I & II
Plate 5B Position 85 : States I & II
Plate 5B Position 85 : States I & II
The re-entries between the two states is clearly visible in the cabling on the corners and in the hatched lines of the top left portion the stamp.
If the homework and study is correct, this would be the first pair of the two states in the collection...
Have fun and happy collecting!

Whilst not wanting to create a simple 'cut, copy & paste' posting, for those interested, here are two more examples of the Plate 5 States I & II from a past Sparks Auction featuring the Rob Lunn International award-winning exhibit and collection of the Imperial Penny Postage “Map Stamp”, and its postal history which provides some additional details,
Keeping my eyes open for my own second pair...

This week saw the addition of two more stamps to the on-going effort of completing a full sheet of Plate 2 from Canada's Imperial Penny Postage, aka 'The Map Stamp'. Plate2A Position 34 Plate2A Position 70
The project to date and almost to the half-way point, Canada's Imperial Penny Postage : Plate 2 - Sheet Re-Construction
Making progress, albeit, one stamp at a time...
Have fun and happy collecting!
