Mexico 1916 Scott 545 10c blue & orange "Ingnacio Allende"
As the new year 2014 is dawning, what are your stamp plans? As a WW classical era collector, mine are... * Hopefully finish the feeder albums transfer into the 1840-1940 Steiner pages. I am now up to Straits Settlements, but have Sudan-Zululand to go. A very pleasant activity. * Develop a "want list" from the checklist that has been ongoing for the Big Blue Scott International 1840-1940. ( I would like to collect most of the stamps that ended up with spaces in BB) * Speaking of BB checklists, I hope to have published at least through Quelimane - the 3/4 point!- sometime this year on the Big Blue blog. * Continue with new blog entries on the country march through BB. I will not finish this year, but who is counting? * Oh, and lose weight. I would love to hear what other Stamp Forum members have up their sleeve for 2014.

I've been going through my collection continent by continent for past few years, and this year it's time to digest my way through the Asian countries. I've also acquired some books (about history, culture etc of various Asian countries) to go through.
Other than that, I think I'll be doing the 'same old' and collect the world, write something for my stamp blog etc.

I'm going after at least 2 of the 90ยข Banknotes. {Profile of Commodore Oliver Hazzard Perry.}
Highest denomination of the Large Banknotes
Below is the catalog information as of 2008. That's the most recent catalog I own at the moment.
Scott #155 1870-'71 used- $350.
Scott #191 1879 used- $325.
Scott #218 Feb./1888-1890 used- $260.
I already own this this puppy! It's a Commodore Perry all right but it's a yellow orange color and from the "baby banknote" issues. Scott #229 Feb./22/1890 used- $140.
Here are examples of the design from the Swedish Tiger's site:

I'm going to combine my 60% full Scott International Volume One with a recently purchased 30% full Volume Two. Then I will start penciling in Scott numbers for the 1940-1949 issues. Let the excitement begin!

If all goes as planned (but it so often doesn't), I'm hoping to start apprenticing with one of the expertisers of Japanese stamps for the APS and ISJP (Int'l Society for Japanese Philately). (We've talked about it. I just have to get started on it.)
I'd really like to become very knowledgeable at detecting early Japanese forgeries, both for my own understanding as well as to be able to give back to the hobby this way.

2014, same as usual, freestyle stamp collecting (Worldwide everything) I have a large cardboard carton that all new stamps are put in, (at the bottom) when they arrive.
I force myself to address the next stamp that comes out of the box, be it State of Oman, or a British Postmark, I never know what is coming.
I HAVE to begin my Romania though, I promised jkblue my early duplicates, but I have so many random Romania, it's hard to know where to start.

First things first, I need to finish assembling the flat-pack bookshelves and racks for my new stamp room in the basement. I also plan to finish a rough sort on as much of my monstrous pile of stamps as is possible. I'll buy new copies of the 2015 Scott catalogue and will subscribe to Scott's Stamp Monthly to keep myself up to date with the catalogue numbers for all future issues, and then I'll get to work on my long-term project, completing a stamp trading website for the cheap stuff that I enjoy so much. I've made a start on the blog for that. Well, fits and starts, I suppose ... (my English plurale tantum for the day). Maybe I'll be ready to do something with that by 2017 or so. ha ha stamptrader.wordpress.com/Ryan

(here, imagine sounds of sucking breath in with head shaking)
Good luck there, Ryan, anything more than a few tourist sewing thimbles, a rose vase, and a stapler, will have those shelves bending like an Olympic Gymnast.

Ah, yes, but I attach them to the wall with screws in drywall anchors - they might fold up in a downward direction but they'll never fall over! ha ha Ryan

Being a Canadian specialist that's where my main goals lie;
-Filling in my modern issues, 1990s to present (I've got all the major Unitrade numbers from from the Q. Victoria leaf issue through about 1993) -Expanding my Semi-official Air Mails. I love these stamps, but the cost/hard-to-findness makes them challenging. -Only need two more Canadian postage dues, and they aren't even hard ones to find. I just have to remember to look for them! -As opportunities present filling in my older issue, #2 through the 1898 Jubilees. -Putting some serious effort into Newfoundland and the other provinces. -Filling in the O.H.M.S. perfins and the O.H.M.S./G overprints.
That should be more than enough to keep me occupied!

I don't really like to make long term plans because something always seems to wrench in my spokes. One thing I am planning on doing is to attend my first stamp show in about 10 years. It will be the St Louis Stamp Expo in March. I'm expecting a little bit different show going experience for me, compared to the ones I've been to in the past. For a long time I was going to shows with expectation of searching for early Spanish stamps. Usually finding very little I always felt the need to buy something, anything, to justify making the trip. So I, more often than not, wound up with stuff I probably should not have bought. Anyway, now I have Denmark and Sweden to look for as well.
Another improvement I'm looking forward to is my wantlist. In the past I would lug around a notebook that contained my wantlist, as well as photocopies of various things as reference, such as postmarks. I didn't want to miss anything. Now however I've recently moved into the 21st century and bought a Galaxy smartphone, and I just figured out how to put my spreadsheet wantlist on the phone, as well as .pdf documents that i can reference. No more tote bag full notebooks and misc stuff. I can leave most of it at home. I can't wait!

I'm sure that sooner or later I'll come up with questions that go beyond my current knowledge / sources... Right now it seems that my collection of Japan meets the halfway limit (50% completion on simplified level) this year. It's amazing how much 'stuff' Nippon Post has put out - especially on recent decades.

Why on earth are you doing that? Or is this a case of "the devil is in the details"? I see now, you said postage stamps not "cindies". If you have any classic US material I'm your guy!

I'm kind of envious of all you tech gurus.I wish I had been twenty years younger so I would have a clue.Sounds great to carry around an iphone with all that data at your demand.My cell phone is a military style because I have been known to abuse things abit.Suppose to survive a thirty foot fall and be immune to being submerged for quite awhile.

I use Google Drive and that's perfect for use with my smart phone. I can work on files on my home computer and they are automatically updated and stored "in the cloud", so if I'm anyplace without my computer I can recall the files on my smart phone. There's a 15 GB limit on what can be stored but that's more than enough - I don't need movies or songs or whatever at my immediate beck and call, but it's sure nice to have documents and invoices and other stuff whenever I want it. Three objectives for the new year: continue to build my 15-20 core country collections and complete the transfer to stock books; locate a 1997 edition of the Scott International Part 1 in good condition to house stamps from other countries; and learn more about early issues of France, Japan and Italy. It goes without saying that I will learn how to upload an avatar and images to this forum. Londonbus1: Sorry to hear that you will be disposing of your collection. Take care.

Unless the USPS truly wows me with the 2014 stamp program (which they have not, as of yet), 2013 will be my last US collecting here.

I spent too much in 2013 so my goal for 2014 is to put myself on a strict budget and go after only those higher end items that I need for US, Canada and Newfoundland. This means I will have to exercise patience. Of course, when something nice comes along on TSF I will have to make an exception. . . .
And the Frog's upcoming Canadian auction won't count . . .
And for the upcoming Pipex in Portland I need to come up with some extra bucks . . . .
Perhaps I should start putting up items to sell on TSF?
