Numerical Postmarks with city names underneath zipper Zip, you have the beginnings of a valuable collection. If you would consider a reference for a checklist, to enhance your enjoyment of the discipline, I have an Excel sheet of English, Scot,Welsh, and Irish postmarks and numbers (I do not have excel, but mine opens in the free "Libre office") Let me know if you are interested, and I may be able to email it to you. Sadly, I am unable to show recognition to the author, whom remains unknown. Thanks, Rod, I'm waiting for "The Numeral Cancellations of the British Empire" 4th Ed. by Heins (Robson Lowe) to arrive. Will I still need the spreadsheet?

Hi Zip, Hmm, don't know. If you happen to be computer challenged (some people are) Then loading Libre office or excel just for 1 sheet, maybe a bridge too far.
If, you are comfortable with computers, then a searchable list, using CTRL F, to quickly find a town or Pmk, is easy.
I'll leave it with you, see how easy the book is, and if you need the excel sheet, it is always here.

Numerical Postmarks with city names underneath As already mentioned, an interesting lot .... but two items I think should be mentioned ... This is NOT 57 Beaconsfield. I am certain it is the 571 duplex of Northleach, Gloucestershire Note the part of the CDS at the left and the wider spacing of the outer bars on the right perf tips - thus a three digit number Also if the last digit 1 were the outer edge, it would be curved ... As would be expected with the size of the location, 700 Sheffield is not a scarce postmark. However, applied in blueish black, (as this appears to be), is a much harder item to locate - as such a nice find .... hope the details help ... Allan

Once again, running late .... All the items so far on this thread listed, and my thanks again for taking the time to post them up Tonight's item is the Japan - British Exhibition [Moderator edit - image links are broken and irretrievable]This scan was sent to me and although I already had the machine roller in the database, I wanted a better example of this to add This is the example that now illustrates the entry in the database Period of use = 24 May - 5 September 1910 (For the record, the Belfast Columbia machine roller is also listed) ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Another area that I have been adding new entries and updating those already in place is the Edinburgh numbered hand stamps One of the recent examples added .... A search for Edinburgh will return 95 matches .... and these are still many more to find and add ... The numbers at the base run from 1 to 31 that I have found and listed at this time The 131 numbered double circle is shown below This is an earlier type and rather than being a hammer number, is the number of the office This was fairly common practice in Scotland and also happened with some English places, where they are referred to as Scottish types Allan

Rod said to me: Zip, you have the beginnings of a valuable collection. I say to Rod: All it takes is $. Oh, yeah… And time. Building the start is a time issue more than a money issue ... Pick on the cheap stamps, (half penny orange as in your selection, the penny lilac and other such values), and a great deal of the basic postmarks will be found on these ... As a bonus, this may also turn up some of the rare items as many of the smaller offices can be quite scarce, and they are often found on postcards or single letter rates, thus on the basic values Happy hunting and have fun ... Thanks, Allan, I'll do that. But I'm still going to buy the HCV's. I adore Vicky, and want a compete set of her GB stamps. (Am also starting to collect her in Mint so that I can see the fine detail.) Vicky's an expensive lady.

Allan - I am finally getting the hang of your database, and wow, is it ever impressive! Here is another Edwardian Melrose with a cross at the bottom of the cancel.

(Buckinghamshire) wiki The town name is new compared with the great bulk of English towns. Gerrards Cross did not exist in any formal sense until 1859 when it was formed by taking pieces out of the five parishes of Chalfont St Peter, Fulmer, Iver, Langley Marish and Upton to form a new ecclesiastical parish. It is named after the Gerrard family who in the early 17th century owned a manor here.

Ireland Ballykinler (aka Ballykinlar) Can now tie in the dates . The British Army Camp was built 1901 Guess: Being a British Stamp, there must have been a Post Office within the Camp ? Otherwise Irish stamps would have been used ?Oops. Northern Ireland Unable to locate a post office that suggests a location. wiki
