As promised, a nice old cover from London to Aberdeen dated Jan 2 1813. Rated at 1/3 ms at lower left. Clear postmark on the front and back but there is a nice rectangular mark at the back that is not clear. I'd love to know what this says. You would think it said ABERDEEN but it looks like there's too many letters and not the right letters to spell Aberdeen. Any ideas? I think it may be a London Receiving House Street postmark. The last bit at the end looks like S t so it could be ???NVILLE. GRANVILLE St ? What leaves you to believe it originated in London? My interpretation would be Edinburgh to Aberdeen Edinburgh circular type with full year on front (in red) (1801-1857) backstamped Aberdeen (ADE) The, what looks like NB manuscript worries me on the front . North Britain. Oops 1/3d (Edinburgh to Aberdeen = 127 miles for the mileage postal rate philatelists)

Interesting to note that there looks to be a previous rate ms at the upper right that was crossed out. Not sure why this is.

Here's a modern British stamp with a cancellation that caught my eye - British Forces Post Office Hong Kong. tallanent's website for British Postmarks shows a couple of different versions of this, with the difference being a code number at the bottom of the rings. Unfortunately, that portion of the cancellation is missing from this stamp - oh well. Ryan

Yo, Rod. Was looking to buy a copy of Collecting British Squared Circle Postmarks and saw there are many editions. Do I need them all? Hi Zipper, Impossible for me to advise, I am a general "collector", not a Philatelist. You are about to grasp the Dragon's tail. For the expense of buying Literature, then the stamps, would be out of my spectrum, for dedicated study. you may have to decide you want to go that dedicated route. My suggestion, as with all thematics, is to find a club or organisation, you can swap information, buy literature, swap stamps etc a lot cheaper than ebay. Squared Circles have a huge following, lots of collectors love them. I'd suggest any collection you build, would maintain its value This is the "Bible" apparently If you find the genre "fun" then certainly, pursue it.

Oh, dear… Someone else has discovered my source for squared circle cancels and has outbid me on all but one. Guess my collection ends for awhile. Yes, that can happen, my overseas dealer, seems to have found new clients, and I have lost a large portion of the "good buys" he prev had. You just kinda have to keep fishing around for new grounds. Still do not use ebay, it seems vastly overpriced for me, $2-$5 for a stamp plus shipping, plus exchange rate. Who is paying these amounts? I click on "watch the item" and very few sell. I just don't get it. Good on you for sticking within a budget. There always will be "more stamps" one just has to be patient.

Another note from Ron and Eunice regarding the triangle in the cancel on the previous page.
'There was another response on the GBPS forum yesterday. Quote I disagree with Hendy on two counts: I believe the datestamp was steel; and the symbol was a stamper's code (or at least an identifying code of some kind), the right-hand letter indicating the time of day. According to Alcock & Holland and Mackay, most (but not all) of the letters of the alphabet were used, as well as asterisks, daggers and triangles Unquote Hendy is the name of the editor of a catalogue.'
Thanks to Ron and Eunice, if you're reading this, and to our Rod for pointing us to them!

Anyone know where I can get a list of all the GB squared circle postmarks? I've search Google and found some lists, but they're incomplete. Can't find books either that have a complete list.

Make sure what you buy includes both London and provincial offices. 1987 is one volume; 2006 is two volumes. This website might be of interest to someone with a passing interest in squared circles of the world: thesquaredcirclepostmarksworldwide.ca/doc.html
