London Geometric Postmark. They were an experiment to replace heavy Duplex Obliterators that were costly and didn't strike evenly unless used by a machine. I believe this is Type 11-C. The prefix N was assigned to "Window Too Late" duty.

I showed the slogan part of this cover in the GB Machine Cancel Slogans thread. Here is the entire envelope showing an additional 3d stamp placed to the lower left. It could not be cancelled by the machine cancel and so, a handstamp has been applied. This LONDON barred cancel appears to be from a much earlier era, although I can't specifically identify it.

daniel I looked through every page of Collect British Postmarks, and couldn't find your London cancel. My copy is only the 3rd edition, so I'll try again when the 9th edition arrives.

As I live in ABERDEEN, I was asked to help a friend research the family of TOWER via the local newspaper Archive. I learned a great deal, but the postal history interest lies in the " SHIP LETTER LANCASTER " mark. On the river Lune, Lancaster could not accommodate ships of any great size. The mark is scarce. This was carried by favour on a Brig "John" from St Croix in the Danish West Indies , and transferred to the Postal service in Lancaster (via Edinburgh) to Aberdeen The 2/2d rate shows it was a double letter

I'm sure that it was a parcel post cancel similar to the Edinburgh one shown below:

daniel Your 1st cancel has London between 2 bars with a shorter bar above and below it. The example in the book shows London between 2 bars with 2 more above and below it. Would that that make a difference, or are they similar enough to be classified as the same thing? I'm still learning, is why I ask.

Would that that make a difference, or are they similar enough to be classified as the same thing? I'm still learning, is why I ask. Me too! But I've found that despite the length of the catalogue, it is far from comprehensive and it will often show just a few representative examples. If you look at the Didcot/Berks example the catalogue states 'Vertical bar types (various sizes)' and there's no reason to think that this doesn't apply to marks with horizontal lines as well. Indeed, on page 150 in my edition there's a similar example with thick vertical bars for Liverpool, the one I showed for London is similar but smaller and with horizontal bars. I have a couple of other postmark books which show various early marks not shown in 'Collect British Postmarks': 'The History of the Early Postmarks of the British Isles' by John G. Hendy and 'Britsih Post Office Numbers 1844-1906' by G Brummel. These show some postmarks not shown in the SG catalogue. Daniel

Thank you! Just ordered the one by John G. Hendry. The other is an auction, so we'll see if I win.
I have a copy of London Fancy Geometric Cancels by Stanley F. Cohen, and the number of lines matter greatly. So does size -- it can be the same cancel, but the lettering is slightly larger in one.

What I collect: I collect world wide up to 1965 with several specialty albums added due to volume of material I have acquired. At this point I am focused on Canada and British America. I am always on the lookout for stamps and covers with postmarks from communities in Queens County, Nova Scotia. I do list various goods including stamps occasionally on eBay as hdm50

There are some nice items there Graham.. the 1840 2d blue is nice, So is the A26 on 6d brown, but the very late use Maltese cross on penny red perf letters in all four corners intrigues me.

thegubman - I agree about the "cancel" ink bleedthrough. This is often (but not 100%) a giveaway that a stamp without gum has been cancelled after the fact. Plus, an underlying second light cancellation is highly questionable. This is a great thread. And personally I would welcome the Maltese Cross presentation. Jeff

That was the one that intrigued me with apparent very late used of MC. While there are no absolute standards for MC cancel, most are so similar as to be indistinguishable, there are a couple of Dozen that show recognisable variants ] [url

Hi The stamp is Scott O4. I found a postal cancellation (type 3-2-2-3 bars) with the number 698 corresponds to Shaftesbury. The shape is not the same as mine. Do you have any other information about this postal cancellation?

Hi The stamp is Scott O4. I found a postal cancellation (type 3-2-2-3 bars) with the number 698 corresponds to Shaftesbury. The shape is not the same as mine. Do you have any other information about this postal cancellation? Hi gstamps I think that the short answer is that this type can be circular or it can be an upright oval. Stanley Gibbbons Collect British Postmarks shows only circular examples for the 3-2-2-3 type. British Post Office Numbers 1844-1906 by G Brumell shows multiple vertical oval versions. More information might have been drawn from the postmark part of the duplex. Does this answer your question? I can show examples if you like. Daniel
