Those triangles are beautiful! Don't have any, but did pick this newspaper wrapper up yesterday. The postmark appears to be East London June 22 ?4, CGH. Looks like it was going to Port Elizabeth. Don't know anything about the Cape, so any additional info is appreciated. Again, this is something I don't normally collect, but I saw it, liked it, and it was cheap.

No board? I recall seeing posts, but search found none. No board as of yet. There is a CoGH thread in the Commonwealth/British Africa subforum. Would this thread be better positioned in that forum?

Possibly, I may be the only fellow that looks at Africa, for COGH. How many would look at Commonwealth / British Africa ? That may be a US thing.
If the Cape has a thread now, at least I can search for it.
I do notice Stanley Gibbons has now given away this "Commonwealth" thingy, all countries are listed alphabetically, which is a no brainer for mine.
BTW. Don't bother looking for "Upper Volta" in Scott, or any reference to it, it lies in Burkino Faso. Try explaining that to a 10 year old new collector.

They were my $3 space fillers, which I adore anyhows. My first purchase ever at a stamp show was an envelope of 300 spacefillers for $20, back in the mid-'80s I would guess. What a fantastic purchase, filled with stuff I'll never see in my collection otherwise. Even a £2 Roo (with a great big bite missing out of the corner)! Ryan

BTW. Don't bother looking for "Upper Volta" in Scott, or any reference to it, it lies in Burkino Faso. Try explaining that to a 10 year old new collector. There are many inconsistencies in the Scott catalogue and that is one of them that bothers me. Bechuanaland Protectorate gets renamed, no problem, Botswana gets its own listing with the stamps starting at #1. Afars & Issas gets renamed, hmmm, Djibouti gets its own listing but the stamps start at #439, in sequence with the previous country name (which itself had been renamed and didn't get its listings to start at #1 either). Upper Volta gets renamed, Burkino Faso gets the listing and Upper Volta doesn't get any listing under its own name at all. Another annoyance is the way they determine major and minor listings. Let's say you're a worldwide collector (like me) and you keep track of what you have and what you need by major number listings. One copy of USA #279B, the 2 cent Trans-Mississippi Expo stamp is all you want, you're not interested in the 9 minor listings, or the 11 extra shades beyond that, or the plate blocks or double transfers or who knows what else is listed in the Scott Specialized Catalogue. One stamp is what you want, you collect by major numbers only. Now here's a quiz - how many different Netherlands Christmas stamps are here, if you're a major number collector? Answer: only 10! The majority of these get a major number listing only for the entire sheet of 20 different designs, the stamps themselves get a minor number listing. Grrrr .... Ryan

That is a very gentle way of pressurising one to collect blocks, Scott does this with listing untouched gum prices as well. It is OK if you train to get your head around it. Steiner's pages give spaces for blocks as well, I am happy to mount singletons in their respective positions. Blocks were rarely used as such on cover, it just temps you to get the aesthetics right when you are mounting.
If you go down the aesthetics path, good luck to you, centreing will be after you next, as will your expense account.
With your Netherlands perhaps list the major number, and jot next to it "block set of 12 diff" etc to assist when using the want list.

Hey, a place for this King William's Town hooded cancel. rod, that's a great album page. Yow! ...and that is a super Postmark. Never seen a hooded for the Cape before. No apostrophe in Williamstown, very rarely see apostrophes in Pmks. Opinion : the artist on the page had a Faux Pas with the Wildebeeste mis took the original COA that had two tufts of hair of the mane. His representation looks more like a Unicorn to me, than a Gnu. Update: I stand corrected, perhaps your Pmk has the apostrophe, Could not see a hooded on the internet, you have a "keeper" www.michael-hamilton.com/index.php?ct=&sb=239

Based on the spacing the hood has to include the word "King" but I don't know whether there is (much of) a space between the words. I'd argue that there is a space, barely, between Williams and Town, but they definitely left out the apostrophe.
Nevertheless, when reading historical accounts, the town is definitely three words, with the apostrophe.
I have some duplicates I haven't looked at in ages, but as far as I recall, this is the only hooded cds I have from the Cape. I spotted it in a small lot of used COGH, and was happy to get it.

Pmks can be so illusory, sometimes I see a nick in yours for an apostrophe, then I see a just a loss of ink.

There is a smudge there, at least, but I don't think it goes all the way to an apostrophe. Thanks for the other KWT examples. Nice to note...

If you've tried to puzzle out the strikes, I'd add my guesses...perhaps Villiers on the ORC (second guess would be Hillside). For the CGH, the first guess would be Cape Town, but I can't match that style with what looks to be a 1902 date, and there are lots of other possibilities, to my eyes.

A few months ago, Jon ( blaamand ) and I were having a discussion about Cape of Good Hope stamps, which prompted me to do an inventory of my holdings, which are in fact, not much. I have only one triangle, for example, but it is a nice one. I apologize that this is from a photograph rather than a scan. I will try to replace the image at some point. Jon also seemed to think that my copy might be a color variety other than the most common dark blue, but I have no way to judge that and no other examples to which to compare it, so I will assume it is the more common type for the time being. Chris I only have 28 stamps but they shall go in the future as I am getting a lot of Countries off the map in my future specialized collection.......a taker, maybe ? René all by PM please

Cape of Good Hope halfpenny grey Cape of Good Hope - 1884-1890series-maybe-halfpenny by Mick Taylor, on Flickr There are a few different variations of this halfpenny stamp, and I am having a hard time identifying the exact one that I have. Will I have to finally get into the wonderful world of watermarks to tell for sure? Identifying Cape of Good Hope Definitives Scott Design Types A3 and A6OK, Mick, so how about getting a response to your question after only 4-1/2 years of waiting? Am I too late? I have absolutely no special expertise in this area, but I have been working on COGH lately, so thought I would share some basic info about sorting and identifying these "Seated Hope" issues, which are among the most commonly encountered in collecting COGH stamps. To start, there are two types of designs, one with and one without a frame line around the stamp. Personally, I did not find the illustration in the Scott Catalogue to be overly helpful, and I had trouble telling the difference without magnification. COGH Design Types A3 and A6 image from 2008 Scott Classic Specialized Catalogue COGH, Sc 17, 4-pence blue, Design Type A3 "With Frame Line Around Stamp", Watermark Type 1, Crown over CC (left) COGH, Sc 27, 4-pence blue, Design Type A6 "Without Frame Line Around Stamp", Watermark Type 1, Crown over CC (right) Hopefully, the above image illustrates the difference in the two design types better than the Scott Catalogue. So, Mick, looking at your half-penny gray, it is clearly Design Type A6, without the frame line. So, yes, to further identify, we will need to look at the watermark, but I found these quite easy to see on these COGH stamps. There are three possibilities: So, Mick, back to your half-penny gray stamp. Here are the possible combinations: COGH, Sc 23, half-penny gray black, Design A6, Wmk 1 Crown over CC COGH, Sc 33, half-penny gray black, Design A6, Wmk 2 Crown over CA COGH, Sc 41, half-penny gray black, Design A6, Wmk 16 Cabled Anchor If you still have the stamp, Mick, take a look on the back and see if you can spot the watermark. Then you will be able to nail down the ID of your stamp! I would like to take a moment to thank Jon ( blaamand ) for all the COGH stamps he sent, which have really helped me to learn how to identify these correctly. Thanks, my friend!

That's a great write-up Chris, you are helpful as always Great scans that really show the differences of the designs, the illustrations in Scott are plain bad. Well done you. Further to the watermark possibilities, I would just like to add inverted watermarks also exists for some stamps, however most are quite scarce. I went through more than 1000 of the Hope stamps, from various sources, and additionally soaked about 200 "penny reds", however I didn't find a single stamp with inverted watermark, so that was a waste of time Still it is thrilling to look for them - hope anyone else manage to find one!! Glad you liked the COGH stamps I sent you Chris, just happy to help. (The triangle was nothing but a spacefiller though)

Cape of Good Hope, Sc 1-22 Arranged on Hagner Stock SheetMy early COGH is pretty meager, but I am hoping to improve on that. Like many collectors, I am fascinated by the triangles, so I will attempt to put a few more nice ones into the collection. Here is my initial scan of page 1. I have a better header in preparation, but using this one for the moment. Scott numbers and best available identification for all stamps follow below the image. Page 1: Queen Victoria Era, 1853-1876 (although perhaps oddly, QV is not depicted on any regular COGH postage stamps)Row 1: Header from an old Scott International album, but this will be replaced with a more interesting one. Row 3: COGH, Sc 4, 4-pence blue on white paper (SG 6, dealer identification) - Printed by Perkins, Bacon & Co. Row 4: COGH, Sc 13 & 13a(?), 4-pence blue and 4-pence slate blue (color variety not confirmed) - Printed by De La Rue & Co. Row 6: COGH, Sc 17, 17a, 18, 19, "Seated Hope" definitives with Frame Line Around Stamp, missing Sc 16 1-penny rose/carmine red
