I hate when things arrive in mail completely encased in the stuff, then after breaking in I find more tombing the stamps.I'm always worried I'll destroy contents trying to get at them. Then the stuff is laying in wait when you do get to the goodies just trying to stick itself to the stamps.

Back on topic- I got a few album pages mailed to me a few years ago and they was probably from the late 60's or 70's and for hinges they used envelope flaps, scotch tape and stamp selvage. Almost all was ruined by them.

Vegemite is a very acquired taste ILS and is not for the faint hearted As to american eating habits I have always been repulsed by the thought of peanut butter and jelly Back on the topic the use of tape on covers to seal them up has always been one of my bugbears - the damage and sight blight get me going

It is exciting to get a package with high value stamps on it, only to be ruined by scotch tape holding them on the package.

Sellotape. A picture is worth a 1000 words, they say. Apparently an all too common practice. Here's a sampling from my damaged stamp pile...I don't have the heart to toss them.

Hi Back on topic- I got a few album pages mailed to me a few years ago and they was probably from the late 60's or 70's and for hinges they used envelope flaps, scotch tape and stamp selvage. Almost all was ruined by them. The most unusual mounting I have seen was in a collection that I was breaking down for my friend's store. The person cut the bottom corner off a glassine envelope, appropriate size of course, hinged it to the page and put the stamp being mounted into it. This was done for some mint and used stamps that cataloged a few dollars. Jerry B

It must be pretty bad. As I mentioned somewhere else, the owner of the little British products store told me to buy something else if I was not Australian when I asked the same question. Jerry B

Hi It is exciting to get a package with high value stamps on it, only to be ruined by scotch tape holding them on the package. How about "Marker Monkeys". I got a package with 3 or 4 USD worth of commemoratives on a manila envelope. Some stamps had been normally cancelled but not all stamps had a cancellation. Each uncalled stamp was cancelled by a big black Sharpie line. Rodney: I am planning on getting a scanner, finally. However, I have to find one that has drivers and software for both XP and whatever else MS comes up with in April when they stop supporting XP (idiots). Once done I can write up some stuff. Jerry B

I had whole album full of those sello/scotch/sticky tape hinged stamps. I worked for a while on how to clean them as the damage is one which is similar to fat on paper or clothes. I used different mixtures of solvents ,starting from 100% hydrocarbon (eg zippo) to blends of hydrocarbon and alcohol(eg methylated spirits) followed with a longish bath in warm water with detergent it was reasonably successful with most of the stamps.

Good (rubbing hands together) You are the go-to man for Sth America.
I don't share your concern over XP, I see it as being a faithful servant for the next ten years or so. I would debate the IT gurus, most of the hacking done now is Android based, the thieves and varlets will hold very little interest in past technologies, what do we have to steal other than a few stamp images, and pics of Mum and Dad and the kids.
There are bigger fish to fry.

Celluloid is the root word of "sellotape" so wouldn't it be Cello-tape? Just curious as I'm not being the "grammar police" here or anything.

Good old PB&J sandwich. However, it is much much better with slices of banana on it, with or without jelly. Elvis was known to go one step further and put bacon on it. I have a questions for all us Yanks. Remember Marshmallow Fluff? Another great American classic, Peanut Butter and Marshmallow Fluff, banana optional but better with it. huckles888 if that repulses you how about this restaurant in New York: ilovepeanutbutter.com/sandwichshopJerry B

Apparently old stamps was a popular method of hinging too. I was looking through some of my Back Of Book stuff last night and noticed that a few has parts of other stamps deliberately cut into strips and then each strip was used like a hinge!

Thanks for the idea Perfs14. I never considered attempting to clean them. I'd write them off as a lost cause and bin them. Next one I come across, I'm going to give this a try. I'll post before and after picks on the results. Jerry B - I remember the marshmallow fluff stuff. My friend loved it. I thought it was nasty. Peanut butter and honey was much better. The head of the botanical illustration school I attended was Australian and she said you had to be weaned on Vegemite in order to eat it. She would show photos of her year old grandson with the stuffed smeared all over his face.
