OK, you'll have to help me out with this one - what's the pun? For Great Britain Machin head collectors, note that the Wedgwood booklet shown in Rod's post contains one of the rarities of Machin collecting. This booklet was the only source for a 1/2p turquoise Machin with a phosphor bar only on the left side of the stamp. Ryan

Thanks for the info on the Machin, Ryan, excellent!
The Stamps, commonly known as the “Sydney Views”, the design of which was based on the Great Seal of New South Wales. The Great Seal of New South Wales was commissiond to Wedgewood, when they sent a great dollop of Clay back from New South Wales, and asked him to design a seal in Clay.
Wedgewood's design included Industry, with all her attributes, a bale of merchandise, a beehive, a pick axe, and a shovel, receiving (Freeing?) convicts, at Sydney Cove, and oxen ploughing on the hillside of Sydney Cove.
The Motto Wedgewood used was “Sic Fortis Etruria Crevit” (Thus, mighty ETRURIA grew) ( a quote from Virgil (Georgic 11, V533) suggesting the similarity between how Sydney may grow as Rome.
The cute thing that makes me smile, is the connection with Wedgewood, his Pottery factory itself, was located in ETRURIA, Staffordshire England. That is just so cool.
What a man, a prominent abolishionist, and a big thumbs up.

Thank you. Mine is so ugly I should probably just toss it. With respect, never toss stamps, one day, perhaps your interest may change direction, the stamp has a valuable killer postmark, some of us collect those numeral killers. I have a two volume catalogue of just Victoria Australia Killers, that commands well over $100 For example one killer on Western Australian stamps conveys the information that had been a gift from Mr. Rowland Hill. There is always interest / hidden beauty in the most mundane. If desperate, place your unwanted stamps in a packet, leave hidden in the pages of a stamp catalogue at your Library marked "free for you" Keep posting, you have some great stuff

My list for NSW also has 55 as Newcastle. I copied it ages ago from a site long since dead, so I don't know what kind of scholarship might have gone on in the meantime, but I don't think there is much dispute with the early numbers. Newcastle's post office would have been well established when the numbers were assigned.

Further Info: Flora depicted on the stamp : Australian ferns In 1887 a competition was conducted to obtain designs for these issues. Zipper's stamp won first prize by a one M Tannenberg.

A shard from my collection, showing the Duplex Killer and the CDS (Circular Date stamp) from Newcastle The Duplex handstamps appeared more chunky around this period. Keep a look out for Red Pmk full or part strike "PAID ALL" on NSW stamps, indicating a trip to the US.

I agree about the postmark. I love them. Have a stock book with several pages full. It was just after seeing your bright, easy to see stamp that mine looked ugly.

Let's take a moment to ruminate on a possibility, Using Zipper's New South Wales Stamp.....................and it's design. Was it unusual to have ferns on a stamp? Around 1900, there was a craze in Britain, that heralded the beginnings of feminism, in a pastime avidly taken up by ladies around the area I was Born, in South West England The collection of ferns This spawned a cottage industry, in ceramics, design, art, and even in biscuits. One of my favourites ( I had some this very day ) was created in 1908, the humble, but delicious "Custard Cream" Have a look at the design on the biscuit..... Acquired at stamp club last night. Too late for the train exhibit, but still pretty impressive. They are ginormous! Image area of each is about 4cm square.

I recently acquired this stamp which was sold as the imperf 6p of 1854 (Scott 29). Given how closely cropped it is, it might be from the 1860 issue with trimmed perfs (Scott 39a). My colorblindness isn't helpful in discerning the stamp's identity -- I perceive it as being gray in color. Any thoughts?
