What I collect: If I have a catalogue for it, I collect it. And I have many catalogues ....

In fact and indeed, Russia #116. The relevant quote from the Scott catalogue: "...issued for use as paper money, but contrary to regulations were often used for postal purposes. Back inscription means: 'Having circulation on par with silver subsidiary coins.'" I've already filed the stamp away so I'll just nab an image rather than scanning the front. Ryan

Who's countries "Coat of Arms"? And what stamp? ( I won't be able to answer for about 12 hours, so no rush. )

It must have something to do with a war-time Pope who was 64 years old when the stamp was issued and, sadly, who could not avoid war, although he tried to get other nations to do so. Hence, the irony of his coat of arms -- the dove that never managed to fly off of the Mount of Olives with its branch of peace. I hope my cryptic answer offends no one's piety. If I'm correct you can award me a bottle of Chateauneuf du Pape, '72, which, I suspect, is a Vatican favorite.

- I didn't get the linkage between the Scott number and the vintage. Got it now. The vineyards around here have Oregon Pinot Noir- I could send you a bottle.

Pennsylvania has troglodyte laws about shipping wine, so you'd better not ship any . But Oregon Pinot Noire is great! I once thought to buy a vanity plate for my old maroon Lincoln -- PNO-NOR -- but sadly the car died and I had to sell it on ebay for parts. Technically speaking, the arms are the personal arms of Pius XII, not of the Vatican state, although the tiara and keys might be said to represent the Holy See's arms.

I'd guess Greece 3, although the printing seems coarse.

I'm calling this a Paris print because of very clean spandrels, solid medallion , and lines of shading on cheek dotted at the end. (I also consider the Hermes Heads to be one of the most difficult issues to determine for general WW classical collectors, who are not Greek specialists. ) Congrats Stolzpup (Bud). In honor of the occasion, Hermes will be your protector today, to be added to the patronage that Hermes provides, according to Wikipedia, for "travelers, herdsmen, thieves, orators and wit, literature and poets, athletics and sports, invention and trade".

The new story is that you have an old scan, and it no longer looks nearly as nice. And that's sayin' something, 'cuz she's no beauty in that pic.
I'm betting $12,500,000. (Betting, not bidding.)

Yes, I saw the recent scan and the last 30 years has not been kind to that scrap of paper. In deference to my childhood memories, I want it to be the same.

Can you identify this one? I don't want to make it too obvious, so here is a sliver of the item.

What's the (new) story? The old story is absolutely fascinating. You just couldn't make it up. After seeing these posts around most Stamp forums these past days, I had another read. I never tire of reading about famous stamps and their histories. Londonbus1

On January 30, 1933, Hitler was sworn in. This stamp, issued January 28, 1938, was in commemoration of the fifth anniversary.
The young man is probably representative of the Hitler Youth movement. In Nazi imagery, the laurel he is holding symbolizes victory, while the torch symbolizes endeavor.

Nice cjd.
I think too the youth represents the Nazi ideal presaging the "cleansing" that occurred. Chilling.
