While going through a British Commonwealth junk lot I came across two of these. Not knowing what these were I looked them up on the web. A Wikipedia article describes them as a financial instrument that has been in use on the Indian subcontinent since at least the 16th century. During the British Colonial period they were produced with revenue stamps of British monarchs. This one has a detailed stamp and a very fancy watermark, which you can't see in the scan. There are several different types of these, but I'm not sure which type this is. On the back it is stamped Central Oil Company, Calcutta with a date of March 1983. Does anyone here collect these or know more about them?

Yes I collect all ephemera of India, when I can get my hands on them. I confess, I have no Hundis at all, but they will turn up I am sure A "Hundi" was a method of transferring currency through the mail. You have enough info to start a page Jen, and will add a little spice to your India collection. Early Hundies had nice engraved images of her Maj, QV. (You would place your Hundi where the document was used)

Jen chortled: "Let me know if you would like these and I'll mail them out to you." That's very generous of you Jen, ONLY if you don't want them yourself. It is the type of material that will turn up sooner or later in box lots, so it is of no urgency, I rather see it bless your own collection. If you have no particular use or desire to keep it, then yes please

I now have a Hundi. If I can reciprocate, do you collect TB seals ? I have some early sheets as duplicates, you are welcome to.

Oh my, that is a nice looking TB sheet. I love the little diagram on it showing how to use them. I have the two TB seals you sent in the auction lot and this one would be a third...that sounds like the start of a collection. Yes, I would like the sheet! Thanks

Here's my Hundi from 1892 with a very nice Queen Victoria pre-printed revenue stamp for 3 Rupees, with a Hundi, India watermark. Various Bank of Bengal marks front and back. Appears to be for 5000 Rupees.
