Great stuff Rod....
The last cover w/ blue despatch upside down....... brought back something about the way a stamp is orientated on the cover, I Googled it and found this..

Wow!!, the history, the uses, all the items just blow me away. Thanks for sharing Rod. As always your presentation in impeccable and depth of knowledge enviable. Super pieces. ILS thanks for the great cover. Always nice to see that someone had the foresight to save an entire envelope. These items are truly real beauties.

OK, I'm looking to buy this little fellow but as mentioned is it considered a label? I have a few Blood's Despatch covers too but I'm not real sure on how to properly place them in my cover nomenclature so to speak. I do know where I'll place it however! lol What does stuff like this usually sell for? Sort of a novice inquiry but one I would like to get sorted out. Thank you. It should be said that Steve makes good sense on the local post: LUNDY post. He said I like the idea. Stuff like this gets lost in the Back-of-book sections. Read more: thestampforum.boards.net/thread/161/local-post-lundy?page=2#ixzz3Q0ddqhZbHere are my 2 Bloods Despatch covers for show. I think know that all the private mails and local post stamps & covers are indeed stamps and have their place in the philatelic time-line HOWEVER- They wasn't produced by the Government so therein lye's the "grey area" I'm asking about clarifying. In my personal collection I just put all my covers in Chronological order by both events (Civil war, Advertising, WWI. & WWII. etc...) and by year, so placing it my collection is a snap but the documentation I want correct. The above letter is transcribed/translated (I hope anyway)- thestampforum.boards.net/post/11446

Lovely items Jeff. Beauties.
You can move these to the local post section under the Cinderella section as I believe they are more suited there.

Lovely stuff, Jeff.
Personally, I would be inclined to have them US. Back of book under "United States : Locals" Especially for your own albums. These are a highly specialised discipline and very valuable.
I think a newbie would seek them under US, however if you place text in the post with "Boyd's etc" it makes it fairly easy to "search" So, happy to go with Moderator's hiearchy.

A favorite subject - BEER and one of the most beautiful series - The Beer Stamps I was fortunate to obtain a "few" of the less expensive ones from a collection I got many years ago, others are from auctions.
You post some smashing scans. Beautiful stuff.

Duput & Schenk, New York, NY (1846-47) was established by Henry J. Dupuy and Jacob H. Schenck, formerly carriers for City Despatch Post and U.S. City Despatch Post. There are two types of the first stamp shown, the Dupuy & Schenck Penny Post: a 1c black on glazed paper(Scott 60L1) and a 1c black on gray paper (Scott 60L2). The 2013 catalog values for both were $175 unused and $300 used. Below are images of the two types that I pulled from certificates issued by the Philatelic Foundation. As you will see, both type have a thick inner border and a thin outer one -- that double border appears on all of the stamps certified by the PF as being genuine. Your stamp appears to lack the outer border so, while I'm no expert, I would suspect that it is not genuine.

Not good news on your locals . I do not have access to my specimens where I am so I will post them in a few hours. Can't believe I'm at work?? - Another 10 days and it's back to semi retirement - had to make some $$ to pay for those past holiday excesses
The Dupuy & Schenck appear to generelly have a double frame as noted Also the bottom lettering has some very detailed markings that do not appear to be in yours
The East River has a major problem - it is just too good. The genuine is quite rough and primitive looking Some letters have a very specific shape in particular the "S" They are pretty scarce & can fetch some good prices
As for the Pomeroy - hard to tell exactly - these are relatively available but the color seems wrong As you will see from my posting, the engraving is quite detailed with abundant dots & dashes

I posted many bids in the past couple weeks and I'm really quite shocked by prices realized many lots of roughly fifteen stamps are going for $150-$175 range. While many of the lots contain reprints and fakes that means each regardless is a $10 item.Guess I jumped in a day late and a hundred dollars short.

Interesting; I didn't even know such things existed. Were these all from private mail delivery companies?

Judith yes these are private mail carriers. Most sizeable countries have similar locals. As you can imagine some of them are extremely rare. They are listed in Scott catalog. Ripe with reprints and fakes,a study all in itself. Not for the faint of heart for sure.Think what we now call courier service.

Was the Pony Express an example of a private mail carrier?

actually the pony express was indeed a mail service and in later years locals were issued labeled such.Interesting some locals pre date their service.
