Top row: new addition to the St-Pierre-et-Miquelon set of definitives showing a map of the archipelago, here for the "green" domestic letter rate up to 20 grams. I've shown the 2022 contributions to this set already in this thread, but, for completeness, let's also see the 2016 and 2017 initial offerings:

Stamp issued by Bolivia in 2013 celebrating World Health Day on April 7 th: Note that, on the globe, the green patch meant to represent Bolivia is a tad larger than strict adherence to geographical accuracy would require. Wars have been started for this sort of thing!

Interesting thread. Nice examples. Maps and stamps both have a lot to do with sovereignty and when you put then together ... they can make an interesting statement or help stake a claim. Here's two from Spain from their 1967 Builders of the New World Series. No soverignity issues here, not in 1967, that was settled long ago. But the maps certainly reflect national pride and celebrate historic acheivments. Old Map of Nootka Coast50c Sc. 1490 The Spanish mapped the area and, in 1789, built Fort San Miguel on Nootka Island, just west of Vancouver Island. This was essentially an artillery battery for the defense of the first (Spanish) setttlement in what is now British Columbia, Canada. They left the area in 1795 under the terms of the third Nootka Convention which agreed to a negotiated settlement of the overlapping claims of Spain and Britain in the Pacific Northwest. Old Map of the California Coast3p Sc. 1494 The need for good maps of the coast was essential. Especially for an 18thC Spain concerned about British and Russian expansion into the Pacific.

My impression from a quick search is that the scarcity of paper and availability of surplus maps following World War II led to maps being turned into envelopes such as this one mailed from Berlin, Germany, postmarked 17 January 1947. But is the map itself a German map, or from some other country? Also, I can't place the map geographically. I thought perhaps Libya, but a Google search for some of the town and wadi names drew a blank. The cover contains 1946 issues: Scott #537,543, and 550.

franoise, I think you found the correct location. Google maps in Libya shows an "Al Shuwairif" in "Jabal al Gharbi" province/district that features a road pattern (along Highway 1) running to the northwest and to the south from Al Shuwairif similar to the one on the envelope map. On GoogleEarth the road appears a bit less similar but the wadis are similar in location. Al Shuwairif is about 200 km south and a bit east of Tripoli.

Stamp issued by Cabo Verde in 1969 to mark the centenary of the birth of Gago de Coutinho, who achieved the first crossing of the South Atlantic by hydroplane: Methinks the Cape Verde and San Pedro islands have been moved further at sea than they really are for aesthetic reasons.
