For the International Cartography Conference, held in Barcelona on September 1995, we organised a nice exhibion of stamps and cartography.
The mini-sheet, shows a 1720 German map of Catalonia.
I worked for the organisation and revised the text of the catalog (bilingual English-Catalan)

Fragment of the "Catalan Atlas" a ca 1350 work by Abraham Cresques who was working in Majorca (a Catalan island). It was a gift of our king Pere III to that of France and it's on the Paris National Library. This fragment, shows the Iberian peninsula and NW Africa, as well as Balearic islands. I guess, Michael, will recognise the stamp...

The Tahità island, named on 1775 "Isla de Amat" after the Vicerroy of Perú, Manuel d'Amat i Junyent (Vacarisses, Catalonia, 1706 - Barcelona, 1782). In Barcelona, a square is named after him, and another one as well as a Palace on the rambles, after his widow, Francesca Fivaller (Barcelona, 1756-1791).

There don't appear to be many "maps on covers" in this thread, but I am an advocate of collecting topical covers so I am adding this cover to the mix. It commemorates the completion of Chickamauga Dam and displays a map of the navigable portion of the Tennessee River. The series of dams and locks on this river were projects carried out by the Tennessee Valley Authority in the 1930s. I'm not a maps collector, so I'll be placing this one in my Illustrated Commercial Covers collection.
I discovered an interesting aside on this cover while researching the Tennessee River projects on Wikipedia. Note just to the right of Chattanooga on the river, and also printed vertically in red, is the site of Harrison Bay State Park. The park and a companion, the Booker T. Washington State Park, were developed as recreational areas as part of the project. Curiously, Booker T. Washington Park is left off the map, perhaps intentionally so. Turns out that these parks were segregated with Booker T. Washington intended for black folks and Harrison Bay Park for the white folks. They remained that way until the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
The map proclaims that the project made the Tennessee River, which is a tributary of the Ohio River, a navigable channel to the Gulf. It seems odd to me that a river that runs southwest and then north would be an economical route to the Gulf of Mexico. Looks circuitous at best, but maybe cheaper than putting goods on a truck or train and shipping them to any one of the Gulf states.

I rediscovered this first-day cover in my shoe box collection and post it here as a companion to my November 23rd post, four posts above, of the map of the Tennessee River navigation system. This cover maps the navigable channel of the Ohio River and shows where the Tennessee River joins it just east of Cairo, Illinois. The Tennessee River is unnamed in the cachet, but it is the lower-most river shown that dips down into Alabama and Mississippi before turning northward. There were eight first-day cities, Evansville, Indiana, being one, for Sc. 681, the 2c stamp commemorating the canalization of the Ohio River.
