A first-day cover for Sc. 1547, the 1974 10 cents stamp promoting energy conservation with Detroit, Michigan, as the first-day city. I purchased the cover not for the 1st day cancel, but for the expertly cut and folded envelope made from a road map of the Detroit area. No address, so it is surely a philatelic handback, but I liked the concept and craftsmanship and bought it for my Novelty Covers collection.

Last week I also received a packet of Ascension stamps, so let's show a few. We'll start with these map stamps. Note that, according to the larger one on the bottom left, Ascension Island lies on the western side of the mid-Atlantic Ridge and thus is geologically South-American, not African like the stamp catalogs like to make it...  |

Coats of Arms of the States in the FRG. salentin had put these up earlier, all used. I had 3 used until yesterday, now I have a full set MNH. I like this series that was issued over the course of 3 years.

Switzerland, 1941, 650 anniverssary of the Helvetic Confereation. Lake of the Four Cantons and arms od the 3 founding ones: Switz, Unterwalden and Uri. Luzern (the other canton) was to join the Conferation in 1332.
I remeber being there, back in August 15th, 2014.

Barbuda 1968 - Sc # 12 - from a set of which # 20 has been shown by salentinThis Dependency of Antigua has been devastated recently by Hurricane Irma in 2017 (Sep 6)
Part of the Lesser Antilles, and located on the outer arc of the West Indies, Barbuda was directly in the path of the Category 5 storm. When Irma visited in the early hours of September 6, 2017, Barbuda suffered 95% devastation. Winds of up to 185mph (298kph) decimated everything from homes and hotels, to schools, the airport, and the community’s only hospital. Neither running water nor electricity survived, and the island’s steel phone tower folded in two as if it were made of chicken wire. The Prime Minister, Gaston Browne, called the island “uninhabitable” and ordered its 1,500 residents be evacuated.

Block and single issue from Algeria in 2013 celebrating 50 years on Chinese medical humanitarian work in Africa:  The stamps issued by African countries in the last couple of decades are a great way to measure the growing diplomatic influence of China in the continent, as themes related to joint activities with China progressively replace those with the traditional European colonial powers and the Cold War superpowers. Notice as well that the map of China on the block includes the island of Formosa and the "nine-dash line" delineating the PRC's claims over the South China Sea. |
