Here are a couple of stamps from the Ryukyus from an earlier period than what Rod has already shown. The little stamp has no English text, only Japanese characters - when I first came across these early issues I had a tough time finding them in the catalogue. This one was issued in 1952 and is denominated in Japanese yen. The other one was issued in 1961 and is denominated in US dollars. I have very little in the way of used stamps from the Ryukyus, but once upon a time a batch of kiloware had a bundle of these $1 stamps. Most of them were in poor shape, either yellow on the back from soaking off a yellow envelope, creased, tore or otherwise unhappy. This one looks mostly OK, though. Ryan

I spent over five and one half years of my life either on or deployed from Okinawa and don't have a single Ryukyuan stamp to show for it. Four of those years were with my family so we brought home a lot of rosewood furniture, cloisonne, and Persian rugs.
Edit: I forgot to mention that our daughter was born on "The Rock" so we brought her home too.

The 50 Sen white-paper print is a curious issue. It was issued on Sept.6th,1958,just ten days before the B-Yen was replaced by the US-Dollar on Sept.16th.It was valid for postage another four days till Sept.20th. So what was the point to make this reprint ? Cannot be greed of the postal administration. The whole print of 300.000 stamps valued at US-$ 1250.- only.(1 $ = 120.- B-Yen) Having no specialized catalogue for Ryukyu,I was not aware that there were three printings. But when I had a look at my 50 Sen stamps,I found two slightly different ones on "ordinary" paper.
The left stamp has a slightly larger design than the centre one.(The right one is the white paper stamp.) The design, but also the overall size of the left stamp,is about a quarter of an millimeter higher than the middle and the white paper stamp as well. Is this the difference between the first and second printing ?
"Ordinary" and white paper are rather easy to distinguish from the front side:
But the difference is striking, seen from the backside:
(both are mint stamps)

Hello i have found a stamp of the Ryukyu Islands. Want to share it with the rest of the group. thank you for the short biography of the history off the islands. This is one of the reasons i collect stamps, to gather more knowledge about the history of countries and regions.

I lived on Okinawa (part of Ryukuyu Islands) for almost 4 years and never had any interest in collecting the stamps from there. My focus was on US. It would have been easy then. It was during the period when the US turned over the islands to Japan.

Been gone for couple of days. Opened another couple of boxes from Grandpa's collection and spent almost entire weekend going through them. Found some interesting ones - this time Ryukyu islands stamps (sorry for the photo quality - didn't have time to scan them). A very nice assortment of occupation stamps for the Ryukyu Islands. It looks like it goes up to 1963. It wouldn't take too much effort to bring it up to 1972 and have a complete collection, if you were so inclined. If you come accross any loose stamps in the box - the ones to look for are Sc. 7a and 17. Other than varieties, they're the only ones that are harder to find at a reasonble price. Thanks for sharing.

gmstamps, I recently purchased a Ryukyu Islands collection like yours on White Ace pages. In my opinion, they are beautiful pages. It is about 75% complete so I have been trying to fill in some of the gaps. Below are some of the items I purchased at 20% of the prices listed on the top of the stock cards. These are all used and some of them turned out to be dupes of stamps I already had but the mnh stamps are, in some cases, too pricey for me.

Japan was the first "over-seas" country I collected.Ryukyu was the logical next choice then. For a few years, before the islands were given back to Japan,I received new issues from the philatelic bureau in Naha. My collection never became a complete one,as the 100 Yen overprint from 1952 was out of reach for me. But anyway,I will show, what I can:
Definitives,issued July 1st,1948.
This issue was printed on greyish paper and stamps have a rough perforation. Prints:5 Sen 60.000; 10,20,30,50 Sen 180.000 each; 40 Sen 30.000; 1 Yen 45.000; Valid for mail in Inland, to Japan and USA till January 1950.From then on world-wide.

Very, very nice set ... especially the 1y -- B type Yen, US military script.

Ryukyus are a fun little area to collect. (Except for that pesky rare #17!). I’m getting close to completion MNH and used - need about a dozen. Finding used copies is much more difficult. Here are a few varieties from my collection. a page from my album. Looks like there are a few duplicates to cull

I lived on Okinawa for almost 4 years in the early 70s and there when we turned it back over to the Japanese. For some reason, I had had no interest in non-US stamps even Ryukyu Islands. I do remember them and that the sc 1 - 6 were most valuable if I recall.
