Having spent my career with the military, I made it a point (unfortunately only while serving on HMCS Kootenay in the navy) to visit the post offices of most ports of call. I missed Guam. So I bought stamps from the USA, Singapore and Hong Kong. The clerk at the main post office in Singapore realized I was a collector of stamps & asked if I'd like gutter pairs as well. Of course! Nice chap he was. I wished there were more, but this is it...

A bit off topic, but I also picked up a couple banknotes, which I kept. The 1¢ (!) note is printed on plain paper, the back is blank. The $10 note just caught my eye... engravings huh?

The King George VI issues from Hong Kong can be a pretty interesting study. There are two variations which are clearly defined because of the color changes, and one perforation change. So you have the pre-war issues and the post-war issues as shown above for the $10 values. This makes it pretty easy to tell the difference between the time periods.
There were a lot of printings that are not all catalogued, so it can be a real challenge for the specialist. Unfortunately for the new collector, it is a popular country to collect so the price for a complete set is quite expensive. I would recommend looking at the used issues if you are on a budget. They were extensively used, so the price is quite reasonable even for the scarce items.
If you are interested in seeing the various Commonwealth, Gibbons and Scott catalog listings for Hong Kong King George VI issues, please use the link below to view them.
I also now have page scans from my reference collection available for viewing. Use this link to view the pages.

Unfortunately for the new collector, it is a popular country to collect so the price for a complete set is quite expensive. I know the comment was meant for the KGVI issues, but the prices for Hong Kong do tend to be quite high. It is a popular area with Hong Kong collectors and with the vastly increased collector base in China. I was astonished (and pleased) at the price I got for these "Year of the Pig " 1971! I had 4 Hong Kong buyers after these last week....

My first page of Hong Kong The rest of the pages need a bit more work labelling them all. Something to do in the future I think, a nice little retirement job.

Nice stamps feebletodix ! Why is the 4 cents (9d) stamp of a different size ? Is it beacuse it is a margin copy?

feebletodix - Congratulations, that's a very promising start!! Many fine stamps indeed - and postmarks as well. I do not know if you are interested in postmarks on Hong Kong? The possibility of finding postmarks from Treaty ports or abroad certainly make for an interesting study. I have made up a guide (in pdf) as a starting point to help in the study of postmarks on Hong Kong. Let me know if curious, and I can send it to you.

feebletodix - I do not have any catalog available where I am right now, and cannot remember all details of Hong Kong stamps, I haven't touched them myself for many years However I believe you might want to check your 2 copies identified as #45 again. It seems to me the overprints have different Chinese characters in upper left corner? (I might be wrong)

It seems to me the overprints have different Chinese characters in upper left corner? (I might be wrong) Great comment, Jon! As usual, with or without catalogue, you have an excellent memory! I agree with you that Gavin's ( feebletodix ) Hong Kong, SG45 examples appear to have different Chinese characters on the left, but of course we must bear in mind that these are added by hand-stamping, so there will be some variation. I don't have any special expertise in this area, but I have recently been concentrating on HK, so have looked at many examples of available stamps, and I am seeing everything from dark, clear, well-defined examples of these hand-stamped characters, to some that appear to be little more than a smudge. So, it runs the spectrum in terms of what you can find. Above is the excerpt from the 2008 Scott Classic Specialized Catalogue, where HK Sc61 is apparently the same stamp as SG45. As you can see below the listing, Scott notes that there are many varieties of the hand-stamped characters, so I think that you are absolutely spot on to point this out to Gavin. Although the differences do not seem to warrant different catalogue numbers, they are definitely varieties, and collectable as such. Great observation, Jon!

Nikhil, if you want to see two perfect HK QV wing copies side by side, as they would have appeared in the sheet, please see this post by our departed member Clive ( Anping): thestampforum.boards.net/post/47425/thread

Excellent post Beryllium Guy , thanks for elaborating. Valuable input with the snip-out from the Scott-cat, that subnote might explain the 'different characters' very well, thanks for clarifying. I certainly agree with you, different catalog numbers or not - these kind of differences makes for an interesting study of varieties

Thanks for the comments everyone. Re the 9d and the 14 on the same line, both have a left wing margin which makes me think it may be a left margin stamp rather than from the right hand side of a central gutter in the sheet. Most of my wing margin stamps have the wing on the right. Re the overprint, it is the same character but much more heavily inked and firmly pressed onto the stamp. In addition to Chris's posting about lcoal variaitons this goes a long way to explain the discrepancy between the two.

Hong Kong, Sc 1-70 Queen Victoria Era Arranged on Hagner Stock SheetsJust wanted to take a few moments to show the results of some of my recent labors of love with the Hong Kong stamps. Here are the first few pages of what is now most of my collection. There are still a couple of items in my other albums in California, which I will retrieve at some point and integrate with the rest, but this is probably 90% of what I have. Still a little thin in some areas, but thanks to a few recent acquisitions, the overall presentation is not too bad. Cover PageRow 1: Header taken from an old album page. I just liked it and decided to keep it. A bit odd perhaps, but there you go. Row 3: HK Postal-Fiscal facsimiles, also clipped from old album pages (different ones from the banner). Row 4: Facsimile of HK, Sc 66, just as a space-filler until I get actual stamps to fill this page. Row 5: HK postal card cut-square, KEVII one-cent green (do not have a catalogue to give a number). Row 6: HK, Sc 170-171, 5-cent and 15-cent KGVI from the Centenary of British Rule issue, 1841-1941. Note: To accommodate the height of the header, I had to choose a stock page with taller rows. I will reserve this page for larger format stamps. Page 2: Queen Victoria Issues, 1863-1902Row 3: HK, Sc 13-15: QV definitives, watermarked Crown over CC Row 4: HK, Sc 18, 20, 22: QV definitives, watermarked Crown over CC Row 6: HK, Sc 36-39: QV definitives, watermarked Crown over CA (Sc 36 is probably 36b or 36c, but not positive on color) Row 7: HK, Sc 40-45: QV definitives, watermarked Crown over CA Row 8: HK, Sc 47, 30-cent gray green, QV definitive, watermarked Crown over CA (Faded color due to fugitive ink) Page 3: Queen Victoria Issues Overprinted and Surcharged, 1885-1898Row 3: HK, Sc 51-52: QV definitives, surcharged, watermarked Crown over CA Row 5: HK, Sc 61, 63: QV definitives, surcharged and hand-stamped, watermarked Crown over CA Row 7: HK, Sc 66: QV definitive, overprinted, watermarked Crown over CA
