I have a great fondness for Mr. Zip and was very pleasantly surprised to receive this Scott 1341 $1 Airlift Zip Block on an ebay purchase of 10 gently-used manilla stock pages for $5 with free shipping.

Zuzu: Does your interest run to Mr. Zip's farflung relatives? I ask, because Mr. Zip has a cousin in Japan: (Scott 956-959 pairs (957a, 959a) issued in 1968)

Zuzu: Does your interest run to Mr. Zip's farflung relatives? It does now! That's awesome! What's he called, and is he on more than just those stamps?

Zuzu: You ask good questions! (Unfortunately, I have very few answers ...) But, a little Googling around yields a little bit of info: According to this article, his name is "Number-kun." "-kun" is a suffix that's used for boys, and "Number" would be pronounced like "nahm-baah". "-kun" would be pronounced like "coon". What's interesting to me, and I had never noticed before until I posted those stamps, is that his face incorporates the old (but, at that time, current) symbol for the post office, which looks like a "T" with an extra bar on top. I'll steal this image from the wiki folks: I'm not sure about him being on other stamps, but I'll keep my eyes out for that. I thought he might be on the (inside) booklet covers of stamps from that era, but a couple that I spot-checked yielded nothing.
I will definitely keep my eyes out for any ancillary material and ephemera.

Zuzu: I'm sure you've already uncovered this, but just on the tiny chance that you haven't, there's an interesting set of pages on the Smithsonian National Postal Museum site. I'll just point to the page from which you can listen to Ethel Merman belt out (really!) the Zipcode Jingle. And somewhere I've seen a video of a musical group singing about the zipcode. www.npm.si.edu/zipcodecampaign/p9.html-- Dave

Rod: I did not know about that game, although that was about the time I would have been in the target demographic. Thanks for sharing that!
I do remember seeing standing figures of Mr. Zip in the post office. I think when the program started, he was taller.

In the block Register Vote, Mr. Zip stands there. This Mr. Zip is very rarely seen like this. If others on TSF have pics of him like this, lemme see em please.

Well, I know that LB1 ( Londonbus1) has provided a link to the page of another thread where this image also exists, but I think that this excellent Mr. Zip item must be displayed in this thread, too. Hope that doesn't cause anyone too much heartburn! By the way, this lovely item was, in fact, a gift to me from none other than LB1 himself! Thanks, Michael, you know that I love Mr. Zip!! He's cool!

This will post tomorrow on my Facebook blog but I thought I would post here as well because this thread led me to more information regarding the Mr. ZIP cartoon used in Japan, number-kun. "I spent another Sunday afternoon sorting modern Japanese stamps and focused on the postal code system series of the 60s and 70s. They even have their own version of Mr. ZIP, the Zip Code cartoon used in the 60s & 70s by the US Postal Service. His name is number-kun! More information is available at the website link below. My favorites of this series are the 1972 issue with the character popping out of the envelope and the 1973 issue with the character zipping past and under a tree. mrzip.club/sibling/
