PolandSKARB NARODOWY In 1923, the Polish treasury was short of gold and silver to back up its currency. The following stamps were issued in the nature of charity (fund raising) labels. They were purchased at face value and affixed to mail much in the manner of Christmas seals. The income received, was used by the treasury to buy gold and silver from abroad. 3 Mark Translations

Poland Under Occupation. 1943 Old Copper Knickers. Apparently there is a variety in this sheet, that involves the line drawn as axis through the Globe on the chest of the Eagle.

Lovely stamps Rod. Here are a couple perhaps you (and the rest of the board) can help with. The first was in a Polish group, and the denomination suggests it as well. But can't trace the name or find an image
This second is either a postal label (attached to the 1959 SC#855 celebrating the 3r Miners Conference in Katowice) or a cinderella for the same event. Paper remnants on the back of the label suggest it was stuck on the back on an envelope over the flap, so I lean toward the latter. Though I guess it could be the former, just used on the back of the envelope.

The 3rd Miner's Conference is a doozy! Not on ebay Steiner does not accomodate a space for it
I would have bet your wallet, that it was a "stamp tab" but looks like a poster stamp Never seen it before, and unable to locate a similar image. You'll need to locate a Polish stamp blogger for advice if no one pops up here in the next week or so.

Fake? not likely, that is as genuine as they get, good pmk. Poland 1940's? things would have been real tough, quality would be a secondary consideration. Bravo! I was trying to decipher the Icon "c" over KOS (Central commitee of social welfare) Central Commitee of social welfare of Poland appears on Page 18 www.esrc.ac.uk/my-esrc/grants/RES-593-25-0004/outputs/Download/51b7c1d6-7262-4055-aa05-831327e6ad95VAHS_paper_on_IUCW__JH%20final.pdf Not comfortable reading...... Shields and Brian (2002, 88) find that “ in 1946, there were 147 000 orphans in Italy, 200 000 in Greece, an unknown number in Germany and countless more in other countries. The total number of orphans in Europe (citing Mcardle 1951) was estimated at 13 000 000 . “Alongside the unprecedented instance of mass displacement on the European continent (Cohen, 2008, ), and child disability and disfigurement, widespread disease among children was occurring, with TB the deadliest and most common disease .Shields and Brain’s research (ibid) reports that in Poland in 1946–47, 10 000 children were afflicted, whilst in Czechoslovakia in 1946, 80% of all remaining children were infected with tuberculosis. Children as young as 10 years of age had venereal diseases, as many prostituted themselves 5 for food (citing Mcardle, 1951) Malaria spread because of water lying in destroyed buildings and farmland, and in bomb and mine craters and children died from gastroenteritis, infected from contaminated water. In this situation and in the light of IUCW’s emphasis on its interest in children “on all continents”, the characterisation of IUCW’s work as “difficult but necessary” represents an under-statement which is not always the hallmark of charity , philanthropy and NGO documentation.

In a curious twist, you can take some comfort in the fact, Canada gave wide support (Poland included) to International Child Welfare relief funding. In a way, you have a link to that Cinderella.

I have suffered an attack from an Australian biting nasty. I was bitten on Tuesday morning, and thought I had managed to dodge a bullet, but the lump is swelling and it probably will take (for me) 3 weeks to subside. The nasty "Tabanid" (Horse Fly) I felt the pain, and briefly saw a large fly with yellow eyes. The only stamp I can find with it on, and I cannot find it in Scott ? From delcampe (suggested "propaganda stamp")

I have had Kangaroo ticks, nasty critters as well. When living in Thailand, I adopted a street dog that had ticks the size of golf balls, I took him to the vet, and had them removed, and thereafter had a guardian for life, he would sleep outside the front door, and protect me from all the other street dogs, it was an amazing experience. Many years ago when I was working in hunting camps in Northern British Columbia and the Yukon, horse fly's were always a major problem. As you can imagine the toilets was nothing more then a hut with a hole but most of the time it was just a patch of bear ground. Many bites happen during those few minutes.
We had horses in the camp as it was the main mode of transport so plenty of horse fly's, we would light what we called smudge fires, this was just a low temp fire with plenty of wet grass and anything else that would produce heavy smoke . The horses would stand right over the fire to get relief from the fly's right to the point of getting burns.
As we were young guys we came up with many novel ways to combat the fly's. One chap would catch a horse fly and impale him with a toothpick then take a piece of the horse tail and tie the strand of hair to the tooth pick and then tie it to his finger. This really worked seemed to act as a warning beacon to the other fly's stay clear.
Another thing we would do is take the chain oil for the chainsaws and coat out arms with the oil. Now picture a crew of guys working in the bush for up to 60 days at a time the only means of washing was in the river. We would not use soap as the sent would attract bugs so it was nothing more then a swim and wash of the heavy gunk . On one trip I seemed to have left my sleeping bag behind and had to use the horse blankets to sleep in. Lucky that was only for 2 weeks, each night I would try and dry out the horse sweat and then wrap myself up in wet damp blankets. During those 2 weeks I had more bites that I can count.
Sorry about the rant but I have no love for them creatures.
