Mostly I've been a US collector and in the last 10 years or so there have been very few modern stamps that I really like. Some are okay and some just downright suck. Recently I started looking closer at the stamps of Sweden. Over the years I've seen a few here and a few there but have never gone out of my way to really look at them. Now I can say that I've found a country that I truly do like the modern stamps of. Not just a few but most of them. Scotts #1948a Europa Discovery Race, Spain - Florida Issued Mar. 26 1992 #1974a 1950 Automobiles Issued Oct.3 1992 #1978a Birds of the Baltic Shores Issued Oct. 3, 1992 #1968a National Museum of Fine Arts 200th Anniversary Issued Aug. 27, 1992 [Removed unrecoverable image link] #2163 The End of Railway Mail Sorting Issued Mar. 29, 1996

Lovely booklet pane of the Birds, full marks for Sweden placing the Linnaeus Scientific name in easy to read bold type.

The subjects are interesting and relevant to the country and beautifully done. Swedish botanical issues are some of my favorites. And I like how many have nice CDS cancels.

Normally I also prefer to collect used but I think with Sweden I'm leaning towards mint. At the moment it might be because I think I already have more mint than used but also I'm enjoying them more as "art" than stamps and the cancels would get in the way. That might wear off eventually but right now they're just darn right pretty. How are you for your Sweden collection? I think I'm going to end up with duplicates for some issues such as some of the botanical issues you showed. Let me know if there are any that your needing and I'll put together a care package for ya. Rick

I hardly have any Sweden. Those I have are mainly from the 90s that I got through trading or kiloware back then. If you have any used Sweden you don't want I'd be happy to take them off your hands. I don't have any mint Sweden to trade, but maybe there is something else I could trade you for them.

Sounds good. I think I may have a few I know are duplicates already, I'll put them in with the stuff you bought. The rest I'm just picking away at here and there. I have a partial collection that I want to take apart and remount and I'm sort of doing a quick check as I work on it. When I find more I'll set them aside for you.

Apologies for large res scans, is there software available to reduce the image size? If so I'll reduce and repost. Thanks

That's excellent Rod, any chance I could pester you for a copy of the original hi-res scans? I think this is the stamp they used as an example in the article although I'm unsure as to what the reference "Waxholm Boat" refers to. Maybe that is the description used in the SG catalog. Scott's lists it as #749 Steamer Storskar and Royal Palace, Stockholm. Here is another from the same series that I really like. #751A Mail Coach, by Elgil Schwab Czeslaw Slania is fast becoming my favorite engraver, not that I had a favorite before, but if I did he would have been bumped out by now.

"Waxholm boat" refers to a generic term for a trip option. eg "Long Island ferry" www.stockholm4kids.com/getting-around-stockholm/the-waxholm-ferries/I have (with the help of TSF members here) managed to drop all the images of the book into a *.pdf It is 32 Mb so may not transfer via email. I may have to send you a few pages at a time (I think 10Mb is email max)

I thought Waxholm boat was a specific name or something similar. I understand now, thanks for the clarification.
I didn't realize it was an entire book's worth of images. Very cool. Ya, that exceeds my limit for one email. Possibly a "zip" file?

If you are going to be a Slania fan, (and there are thousands) it is great fun to "search" for his micro engravings. Author : Mette Heindorff Denmark.

Query: My Page borders have gaps suddenly appearing ? fixable? or is my $43 Laser Printer dying? I was hoping someone who actually knew the answer would jump in, but, failing that: I used to own a laser printer, about 15-20 years ago, so I don't know how different they are today from back then. But I found that those "skips" start happening when the toner cartridge (is that still what it's called?) is beginning to get low. I found that it was possible to take the cartridge out of the printer and shake it around for a bit. That helps redistribute the remaining toner, and may get you a little farther down the road before you need to refill or replace it. Again, I could be all wrong about this, so consider the source ... -- Dave

When I was working I had the same experience with toner cartridges as Dave...rocking the cartridge back and forth seemed to restore the print quality for a brief period.

I used a different source for my generic toner ($13) I seem to have gotten a poor page count, so I'll go back to my original supplier and put in a new toner cartridge, if the swishing does not help. I had thought perhaps a drum problem. (I cleaned the drum without improvement)

Form your own opinion. I can definitely see a lass with long blonde hair nuzzling under his chin. Naked? probably wishful thinking. THE NAKED LADY in October 1969 Sweden issued a stamp commemorating the 100 birth anniversary of the writer Hjalmar Sjoderberg. He was a naturalist who produced a number of excellent psychological short stories and several novels like "The youth of Martin Birok", Doktor Glas" and "The Fateful Hour". The stamp printed in brown on cream coloured paper was designed by Martin Lamm and engraved by Arne Waalhorn. The writer is shown sitting at a table with a glass of wine in front of him. "Stamp Weekly" (UK) comments that if you have a close look you will find that fljalmar Sjoderberg is embracing a naked lady sitting on his lap. The question is whether the Swedish Post Office knew of the hidden picture or whether it was smuggled onto the stamp by the artist.' Soderberg : Pronounced ...Suurderbey.

Thanks for that post Rod. I love learning things and I had never seen that Sweden doesn't print sheet stamps. Are they alone in that ? I couldn't answer that Froggie, but I should guess so, I cannot recall a country with more coils. The Sweden regime very practical, I remember going with my Mum to the PO, and the Clerk having to wade through a grubby manila folder to find and tear from sheets. My local PO for that very reason (and accounting) holds very few stamps, and prints labels nearly exclusively. Sweden may have changed since that review. 1980's
